A Chronicle of Hope
I paused in front of the terminal’s large window, where the sky merged with the tarmac in a grey, rainy embrace. Outside, the ground reflected the runway lights like a mirror, but my gaze was fixed on something that broke the monotony of winter: a Transavia Boeing 737-800 unlike any other.

I look at its sides and see more than just metal and rivets... I see a vibrant canvas where white gives way to red hearts, green strokes and a silhouette that seems to invite us to levitate. It is the design of the Peter Pan Vakantieclub foundation. The name, emblazoned on the fuselage, immediately evokes that ‘Neverland’ where time stands still so that joy never fades. Through the rain, the plane shines; it is a flying ambassador, for even in the pragmatic world of commercial aviation, there is room for magic.

Learning the story behind this design, I feel a warmth that contrasts with the freezing weather on the runway. I am moved to know that this plane not only carries tourists, but represents the determination of the airline’s own staff, who since 1996 have been donating the most precious things they have—their time and their hearts—so that young people with chronic illnesses or disabilities can, at last, leave the hospital walls behind and touch the clouds. I feel a deep gratitude towards those volunteers who understand that a journey is not just about changing location, but about reclaiming the identity that illness sometimes tries to erase.

As I gaze at the reflection of the plane on the wet tarmac, my mind inevitably travels thousands of kilometres westwards, towards my other home in Canada. A story comes to mind that captures the same essence: those freezing nights waiting for the CPKC Holiday Train to pass by. Just like this Peter Pan plane, the Canadian Christmas Train crosses borders covered in endless lights, bringing music and collecting food for those most in need.

I remember the face of a little boy and that of my son Matthew, at a small station in Ontario, whose eyes shone just as brightly as the lit-up carriages, making us forget the biting cold for a moment. Today, seeing this aeroplane on the runway, I realise that both—the train and the aeroplane—are extensions of the same ideology: that of serving those most in need. It doesn’t matter whether it’s by air or by land, whether it’s in Amsterdam or Mexico; the mission is the same: to be that beacon of light that tells those who are suffering that they are not alone.

That PH-HSI aeroplane, ready for take-off, is a testament to humanity, just like so many other movements across the world. I step away from the window with a smile, convinced that, as long as there are people willing to paint hearts on fuselages and lights on trains, ‘Neverland’ will continue to exist right here, in every gesture of kindness we share. Una Crónica de Esperanza
Me detuve frente al gran ventanal de la terminal, donde el cielo se fundía con el asfalto en un abrazo gris y lluvioso. Afuera, el suelo reflejaba como un espejo las luces de la pista, pero mi mirada quedó anclada en algo que rompía la monotonía del invierno: un Boeing 737-800 de Transavia que no se parecía a ningún otro.

Observo sus costados y veo más que solo metal y remaches… veo un lienzo vibrante donde el blanco cede paso a corazones rojos, trazos verdes y una silueta que parece invitarnos a levitar. Es el diseño de la fundación Peter Pan Vakantieclub. El nombre, rotulado, evoca de inmediato aquel "País de Nunca Jamás" donde el tiempo se detiene para que la alegría no caduque. A través de la lluvia, el avión brilla; es un embajador volante, ya que incluso en el mundo pragmático de la aviación comercial, hay espacio para la magia.

Al conocer la historia detrás de este diseño, siento una calidez que contrasta con el clima gélido de la pista. Me conmueve saber que este avión no solo transporta turistas, sino que representa la voluntad de los propios empleados de la aerolínea, quienes desde 1996 donan lo más valioso que tienen —su tiempo y su corazón— para que jóvenes con enfermedades crónicas o discapacidades puedan, por fin, dejar atrás las paredes de un hospital y tocar las nubes. Siento una profunda gratitud hacia esos voluntarios que entienden que un viaje no es solo cambiar de coordenadas, sino recuperar la identidad que la enfermedad a veces intenta borrar.

Mientras contemplo el reflejo del avión en el pavimento mojado, mi mente viaja inevitablemente miles de kilómetros hacia el oeste, hacia mi otra casa en Canadá. Me viene a la memoria una anécdota que guarda la misma esencia: las noches gélidas esperando el paso del CPKC Holiday Train. Al igual que este avión de Peter Pan, el Tren de Navidad canadiense cruza fronteras cubierto de luces infinitas, llevando música y recolectando alimentos para los más necesitados.

Recuerdo el rostro de un niño y el de mi hijo Matthew, en una pequeña estación de Ontario, cuyos ojos brillaban con la misma intensidad que los vagones iluminados, olvidando por un momento el frío cortante. Hoy, viendo este avión en la pista, comprendo que ambos —el tren y el avión— son extensiones de una misma ideología: la de servir al más necesitado. No importa si es por aire o por tierra, si es en Ámsterdam o en México; la misión es la misma: ser ese faro de luz que le dice al que sufre que no está solo.

Aquel avión PH-HSI, listo para despegar, es un testimonio de humanidad como otros tantos movimientos hay en el mundo entero. Me alejo de la ventana con una sonrisa, convencido de que, mientras existan personas dispuestas a pintar corazones en los fuselajes y luces en los trenes, el "País de Nunca Jamás" seguirá existiendo aquí mismo, en cada gesto de bondad que compartimos.
