I guess I’m still at that age where I believe that the things that I am interested in would be unique to people in the same age bracket as I am. And even for those that I’m not interested in, it’s normal when I see my peers showing avid interest in them and doing everything that they can to stay up to date about the happenings in that particular world.
And the world that I’m talking about is none other than the world of football. While I’m not a fan of football, I would never find it weird when young men and women take an interest in it. Hell, when I come across old men who take an interest, I just find it to be another thing that brings men together across races and ages. It’s just one of those things, right?
Anyway, this night, I encountered something I’ve not experienced before. On my way home, I walked past a shop that sold second-hand TVs. And as you know, these shops always have one or two TVs that are displaying something. Well, this shop was no different. One of the TVs was showing wrestling, and the other was a sports thingy. But as I was walking past, they showed a clip of Arsenal Football Club, celebrating their win as they lifted their trophy.
As I continued walking, I noticed that a woman walking behind me was talking to herself. She was congratulating Arsenal and talking about how winning the trophy wasn’t easy, and how it was a well-deserved win! She was so passionate about it that I turned to see her more clearly, and to my shock, she was an old woman, maybe in her 80s. I was beyond shocked!
From the kind of things she was saying, it was clear that she was up to date with the football world, and she has also been a fan for a long time. Seeing an 80-year-old female football fan was really impressive because she comes from a generation where women couldn’t even take an interest in activities that are deemed to be for men only. Well, I don’t really know her journey, I just know that, like millions of people all over the world, she was happy for Arsenal’s wins.
She reminded me of the time an old man was arguing with me about some MCU movies. Like, it was a very logical argument, one where two people who knew what they were saying were debating. I was just impressed that at his age, he still had time and strength to follow the expansive world of the MCU. He was not like those people who watch films in private and then pretend they hate it outside. Or the ones who simply think that watching movies is a waste of time.
I guess that age doesn’t dull certain things. As long as your brain is capable of handling it, then you should very much feel free to enjoy and binge on it. Because you never can know for sure, that may end up being the only thing that gives you joy.
