Hitting a Wall, Language Dilemma

Consistency is key. Without it, routines fail, motivation dips, and bad habits return. That is what I have learnt this year. I have been on Duolingo for a while now, and although the app has its good, bad and ugly, I have stuck with it to keep my streak and learn a language in the process. I am currently learning Italian. Furthermore, I chose Italian because I had planned a trip to Rome, and it was a good choice because just 12 months later I went back to Italy, this time to Naples. Unfortunately, after learning A nice bit of Italian, I seem to have hit a wall in my learning. It could be that Duolingo can't teach you on its own, that there are far more things required to learn a language, or that I am not dedicating enough time to it. Either way, that hasn't thrown me off trying to learn, and I have actually been thinking, what if I throw a second language into the mix? Sure, I am really giving myself a workout trying to learn two languages together, but would it be a good choice?

My second choice of language to learn would be between French and Spanish. French because I learned some basic French in school. Spanish because it is one of the most spoken languages in the world. I have heard that Italian and Spanish are very similar, with them being "Love Languages", but maybe I'm wrong.

If you have any advice, do get involved below. With that, I conclude today's post.

I think it definitely has limitations. I have been doing French for a few years and have picked up a lot, but still would not be confident speaking it and might struggle to understand it. I ought to watch more videos and TV shows in French, but I treat it as an exercise that may be useful. I started as we were going to French speaking parts of Canada, but did not need it much there. I did learn it at school, but not very well and that was long ago.

I do speak fairly good German as I lived there for a while. I just wonder if learning two similar languages would cause much confusion.

I was trying to share a video with you called "How to really learn a language in 2026" by @languagejones on youtube, but for some reason, I couldn't get the "share" link. Hope you can find it 😍

The same channel had evaluations of the various language apps like Duolingo and other suggestions for improving. I've been using the free version of Busuu recently - not great but better than Duolingo.

You may be able to find a local Italian conversation class - maybe on facebook?

Watching Italian shows and listening to the radio are great ideas, too!

How did you get on with your visit?

Always good to learn another language, too. I'd try it and see how you get on.
