Very interesting question Clix. Meaningful to me as well. This censorship topic and the consequences of having open thought and opinion led to my YouTube friends being deleted from YT. Which was how I found Steemit. They told me they knew of a free platform. Where free speech was possible and where we could not ever be deleted. At the time we did not know about the downvoting system. I think the downvoting system is a form of censorship but it rests within the hands of the community to choose what is acceptable. Whereas with YouTube the owners of YouTube decide. Here the people decide. And to me that is not perfect freedom but way closer to it than just being wiped off of YouTube for saying the wrong thing. At least here you can still exist no matter your opinions.. mind you with a possible low rep via down votes from free speech which may offend others.
So after the mass censorship of YouTube I made an account here. My intent when I made the account however was to create a fun channel to share my family life and make people smile. The intent of my channel here is not be political. However as people have seen I can be very out spoken with my feelings, thoughts, and opinions.
People in power often squash all opinions they do not care for by simply calling those opinions 'hate speech'. Which is too broad. If people want real freedom they need to develop a thick skin. Saying facts and truth can lead to the arrest of otherwise free people.
As we know some people have even been shot for free thought and opinions. Let us think of Martin Luther King. He was assassinated. He was a free thinker and out spoken. This man paid the ultimate price.
So what conclusion can I draw from this? The conclusion is that freedom exists. Yes people can say anything they want. But they must understand that freedom comes with a price. When we exercise our freedoms we have to deal with the consequences of those actions. We have people who will oppose our views and take action against us for having world views that do not line up with their own.
So for example someone is free to say out loud as a large body builder walks by "hey meat head" but they should be prepared to possibly get punched in the face. Because when we say things we have to deal with the people who hear those things. And therefore if we want to maintain a level of peace we must be mindful that what we say will effect those who hear our thoughts. And in turn we will have to deal with the consequences of those heard opinions/thoughts.
I think this topic goes further than the blockchain. I think it is the same for if you work at a grocery store, or you are a nurse, or a hair stylist, or you are on YouTube, or even here on blockchain. The point is freedom has a price. Freedom costs. We pay for it. People have died fighting for freedom. And even now the battle for freedom wages on. There will always be opposing views.
So we have to ask ourselves what is our objective here? Are we here merely to entertain? As such we should stick to that, and try not to offend others.
If we are here strictly to share political views we can do so. But we must realize that for every action there is a reaction. And yes I would assume people who do not agree will down vote and punish opposing view points.
So let me explain myself a little more. If I work at the bank and my boss is over weight. It is my right as a free born human to say "Hi Fatso!" But he will probably fire me and I will not have a job! Does that mean I do not have free speech? You see I do have the freedom to say that, and I can say that if I want.. but where it gets deeper is when I realize that.. YES I can say anything I wish.. but I will have to PAY the price for what I say. So I must decide between working at the bank, or calling my boss a fatty lol. I know this sounds silly but I am just trying to make sense of this.
Now does that make the employee fake to not say his true thoughts to his over weight boss? No I think it makes him smart because he will know he will become homeless with no way to buy food and pay for his rent. Some things are best left unsaid. And some things are worth fighting for.
Some things like the efforts of Martin Luther King are worth paying the ultimate price for.
We can say anything we wish. But we will pay the price. The question is.. is the cause so great that you would pay the ultimate price? If not than it is best to keep certain opinions to ourselves and carry on. We can hold opinions and choose when and if to share them. We own our thoughts. We own our actions. What we choose to do and say will have an effect on others. We have to realize we are free, but so are others to react to what we choose to say and do.
I could say more but I think I have sort of said my 2 cents here.
Thanks for this Clix! Talk soon :D
Here is Newtons cradle. I feel our actions, thoughts, opinions, and words can effect those around us much like this cradle. If we knock others.. which we are free to do so yes.. they will knock back.
