100 Steemians Gave their Best Advice to New Users ... Here's What They Said. (Plus Contest Winner Announced!)

Last week I passed the 1000 follow milestone, and to celebrate I ran a 10 SBD Giveaway! Lately I have been noticing more and more questions on my posts about steemit and I thought it would be so cool to not only give them my two cents, but have an entire bank of helpful information they can reference back to as well!

The Contest

For my giveaway, I simply asked people to comment with their best piece of Steemit advice. I was absolutly floored by how many people responded, and how helpful the tips were!

Here is a link to the Contest Post and I would highly recommend reading thorugh all these great comments. I'm pretty excited to have this resource listed all in one place so that I can send users a link to that article and encourage them to look through it for advice and encouragmenet on their steemit journey.

This bank of advice ended up being really well-rounded. There were many topics covered and advice from all levels of users. There were tips from people who had been here a week to those who have been here for a year and a half.

I want to give a big shoutout to all of those who gave really stellar pieces of advice! You guys rock!

@jkenny, @steemmatt, @benleemusic, @isteemithard, @josejirafa, @jhairahdignos, @mrwh1te, @homescoolkidz, @snrm, @thekitchenfairy, @cryptobeans, @hors, @roldamn, @chasegapo, @ireasons, @goldmatters, @dtwo, @soykatonline, @blackempror, @rashford, @davidallenjones, @kolapo1, @skrulze, @markmorbidity, @the-fundraiser, @alexphuah, @aice20, @josediccus, @squares, @mickyscofield, @apiprincz, @highjaykay, @itharagaian, @steemitqa, @rumbledoor, @alkhemst, @realseb, @yura81, @aussieninja, @ajibade, @xplore, @nuedareniel, @aytim, @mortyc137, @artzanolino, @favoured001, @wireless07, @leo-lobo-astral, @aldentan, @kamalkennedy, @rebelheart, @lavanyalakshman, @endless.drugs, @rharphelle, @marlon241982, @holadeivi, @ezinwakelvin, @drayhazz, @williams21, @caleblindsay, @melanoquin, @godofbit, @adetola, @sezenke, @alexandraioana26, @ths77, @mightymicke, @isellbooks, @innita, @bryandivisions, @rebe, @ciocolony, @dwarfche, @guitartech, @cyoadventuregame, @thankori, @ainie.kashif, @chiboyzz, @shanu, @rochelejohn

Now in the original post... I mentioned that I would be doing a random draw to select the winner. I actually do it as a live drawing in this Dtube video!

Drumroll Please...

The winner is @chasegapo!! I will be transferring 10SBD to him momentarily.

The Main Themes

As you can imagine, certain themes started to rise from the video. Even though everyone brought their own unique voice to the advice - it was clear that most users find certain pieces of advice to be the most helpful for new users. I go into more detail in my Dtube Vlog, but here are the highlights:

  1. Be yourself, be authentic.
  2. Post great, high quality content.
  3. Engage with others and build relationships.
  4. Steemit is not a get rich quick scheme.
  5. Don't get discouraged. (If you do... refer back to the above tips).

A Word Cloud of your Responses!

I thought it would be fun to take everyone's responses and make it into a word cloud so we could see the most used words from all 100 pieces of advice. Not surprisingly, Steemit was by far the biggest word! Some of the others are pretty interesting to browse through though.

I just want to say a HUGE thank you again to all of you who have decided to follow along with me on my steemit journey. It means so much to me and I am thrilled to call many of you my friends! I mention in the last post that I wish I could go grab a beer with many of you guys... and I'm still hoping one day it happens!

Hello everyone. Im new on this platform. I uploaded a couple of videos. If you would check them out that would be great!

Please refrain from spamming other people’s post just to advertise for your own blog. A piece of advice, is that you will do much better here on the platform if you actually read and comment on others material, instead of just self promoting. I hope that helps, but please let me know if you have any questions.

Haha oh, I think the world is ready for it. Anyway, thanks again for the song suggestion, it ended up being really fun! There were
people swing dancing in the middle, and a few people doing a two-step around the outside of the floor. :-)

Hi, thank you for this compilation and also for the contest! It’s always interesting to hear other opinions. But, for example, now I have a big problem on how to get noticed. Do you have advise on that?

@coruscate | Feb. 8, 2018, 5:51 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Great question! Your blog is off to a great start with beautiful photos, and inspirational topics. I would honestly say that getting to know people and making friends in the platform is the biggest thing you can do. If you spend more time reading and commenting on others posts than you do on your own blog, you’ll be off to a good start. It really can take a while to build those relationships and have a solid follower base.

Also, I see that you are PhD student! Maybe if you wrote a few bigger posts about the types of things you’re studying, people might find that interesting or helpful. :-) Just a thought!

Dont get discouraged and keep pressing on. I think you have a very bright future here on Steemit!

Congratulations @coruscate, this post is the seventh most rewarded post (based on pending payouts) in the last 12 hours written by a Hero account holder (accounts that hold between 10 and 100 Mega Vests). You literally copied someone else’s reply and changed one or two words. This is considered plagiarism, and is unacceptable on this platform. You will do much better here if you actually read content and take the time to respond with your own thoughts. I’m sure you have valuable thoughts to share, and we as a community want to hear them.

@serratus | Feb. 7, 2018, 10:43 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Wow, and I didn't even know this happened. Good advice, I'm always trying to simply distill the info to new users who don't understand what to do at all.

There can definitely be a lot of complexities to getting started, and it can be difficult to explain things to new users... so I hear you there! Feel free to send a link to my original post, with all of the pieces of advice in the comment section. Not sure if that would be helpful, but you’re welcome to use it as a resource as well!

@coruscate | Feb. 9, 2018, 3:07 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I can definitely understand the frustrations of starting out! I did not have a follower base either, or know anyone that had any kind of big voting power. Lots of hard work and persistence pays off over time!

One piece of advice, is that asking people to check out your blog and give you a vote is probably not your best move. I know that it feels like it takes forever to get noticed, but if you focus on reading other people’s posts and leave a really thoughtful responses to their content, they are more likely to check out your blog and give you a vote from that.

I hope that helps, but let me know if you have any questions!

Hello! I found you through your sister's introduction post. As a PI I love people watching, so I make a habit of going through the new introduceyourself posts looking for new and promising people to help become pro Steemians. Below is the information I share with them. It may help with your contest answer too.

To me the main objective of new users should be value adding and quality engagement.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmSHqvQkvVZNzKUZpi15wedqKyN1tQJcVGnScsTSkxkcFG/Liberty_Professionals---divider---steemit---teal.png]

Webpages

There are a ton of other webpages to help you with Steemit. Here are some of the best for beginners:

https://steemian.info/signup-faq (This site is by @drakos and has a ton of good information for new users to help them get started.)

https://steemd.com/ (This site is used to keep track of your voting power and other stats. You do not want to run out of voting power, and you only get so much per day. I keep my voting power around 80% for example. Also use it to look at the coding for other people's posts. If you see a formatting trick they use, you'll see the code for that trick within the post details on steemd.)

https://steem.makerwannabe.com/ (This site will tell you who follows you, who unfollows you, and who mutes you. It is great for meeting new people too. I regularly check it to see who has followed me to see if I should follow them back.)

https://steemit.chat/ (This site is the official chat webpage for Steemit. There are Discord channels too, but I usually stick to the official site. Come in to network and meet new friends. You can directly message people there too, so it makes it easier to communicate with your closest friends.)

http://steemtools.com/ (This site is a comprehensive list of valuable tools.)

Bots

There are a lot of bots on Steemit. Some are useful and good, and others are not. If you see a cookie cutter reply, especially to your intro post, it is almost certainly a bot. Check the account's reputation. If it is low, I would recommend just ignoring them. Everything is public on Steemit, so you can go look at an account's comments and replies. Are they all the same? It's a bot.

There's one good bot worth mentioning for new users. It is called GINAbot, and you can use it to keep track of things the makerwannabe site above cannot easily do. For example, GINAbot will tell you when a key phrase is used, when you or someone else is mentioned by account name, or even if someone deletes a comment. The bot is extremely powerful and free. Simply add the following Discord server:

https://discord.gg/x9Empcm

When you connect to it, it will ask you to register and verify your account with a .0001 SBD or STEEM transfer. Then you will get a direct message from the bot with a private link to your configuration page. Go there to setup your options. The entire process takes 5 minutes, and it will be up and running. You can tweak the settings as you go too. I highly recommend people use it for networking purposes.

I have mine set to look for phrases like "residential security" and "private investigator" as two examples. Then I never miss out on content related to those, and it makes going there to engage in those conversations much easier. Without GINAbot, I would never have had the opportunity either! Check it out, and ask if you have any questions.

Sourcing and Adding Photos

Adding photos to your account as a new Steemian may be confusing at first too. The easiest way it to click to "Submit a Story." Once in there, use the built in Steemit tool to upload an image from your computer. Below the posting window, you will see "Insert images by dragging & dropping, pasting from the clipboard, or by selecting them." Click on the blue text. Once the image is uploaded, you can copy and paste the link into your account settings.

Here's a link to a Google Document I made to help with the coding:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NlAoGnP8q7ZAxGsEnvza-qotUGkoaae4SwXdubAhi2g/edit?usp=sharing

Graphics, Badges, Signature Blocks, and Banners

There are many skilled and talented graphic artists on Steemit. One of them is a close friend, @grow-pro. He designed my signature gif, badges, divider lines, business cards, and more. You can check out his work further on your own. If you are looking for a graphic artist to help improve your posting images and formatting, he offers low cost services here on Steemit. Look him up!

Account Verification

Verifying your identity is very important because it will get you more support and people will trust you more. The best way to verify is to link back to your Steemit account by using another public social media account.

For example, I share my Steemit posts on my @finnianGC Twitter account. Another way would be to add your Steemit information to your Facebook account. Some people will even post a video of themselves writing out their account information since that cannot be Photoshopped.

The more famous a person is and the more valuable their content is, the more important it is that they verify.

Security

Do not use your owner key to log into Steemit.com to post. Use your private posting key instead. Keep your owner key offline as much as possible, and only use it when you must.

Per the advice given by Arcanage, you should only use your owner key to:

  1. Recover your account.
  2. Change the other keys.
  3. Give a present to your children a few minutes before dying.

There have been some scams in the past. If you click a link to a site that prompts you to log into it, be extra careful. Double and triple check the address to make sure it is really steemit.com. A recent scam was using "lsteemit" as the domain name, and people were entering their owner keys to log into it. That allowed the scammers to take those user's accounts, empty the money from them, and then ruin their reputation by using the newly hacked accounts to further the scam.

If you find or suspect a scam, please report it in the #steemitabuse channel on steemit.chat.

Don't Lose Your Content

Make sure you are copying and pasting your post content often as you write it, and put the data into another document to avoid losing it. I'll copy and paste my content into a Google document as just one example. Some people use Markup editors to do the same.

Definitely keep a backup copy right before you post it too, for some people have come back the next day to see half or the entire post missing even though the day before it displayed correctly. Make sure you copy and backup your long replies as well, for they can vanish immediately after clicking to post them.

Engagement and Authored Posts

In the beginning, unless you purchase some Steem Power, your account will be extremely limited in bandwidth. You can see the bandwidth you have on the steemd.com site. Since you only have limited amounts, it is best to use your bandwidth to engage others instead of authoring long and detailed posts. Once you have more SP in your account and more followers, then I recommend people start authoring more. Never stop engaging other people though through replies. It is the best way to gain followers and build your network with quality people.

Totally should be the entry video for any new sign up that's required to watch. Wonderful content but easy to digest and really get people on the right track here at steemit

Thanks so much for participating and adding your thoughts to the conversation! I was so thrilled to see the advice of being authentic show up multiple times in the comments. In my opinion, this is probably the most important thing of all.
