I thought i would post some photos of my Tomatoes. Tomato plants need a sunny position and planty of water and fertilizer to grow a good crop of fruit. Here in Sydney ,we have fruit fly and the Tomatoes can have grubs inside when they are ripe, which makes eating them a bit yukky. So we have to spray them with insecticide to prevent the fruit fly. Make sure you leave 2 weeks after spraying before you eat the fruit. Homegrown Tomatoes are the best !! I put mulch around the bottom of each plant to prevent weeds from growing and to keep the water in the soil so you don't have to water them as much. Here, i have used Sugar Cane Mulch, but you can use hay or straw too. There ain't nothing in the world that I like better
than bacon and lettuce and homegrown tomatoes.
Up in the morning, out in the garden, get you a ripe one, don't pick a hard one.
Plant 'em in the spring, eat 'em in the summer. All winter without 'em is a culinary bummer.
I forget all about the sweating and the digging every time I go out and pick me a big one.
Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes, what would life be without homegrown tomatoes?
Only two things that money can't buy and that's true love and homegrown tomatoes.
You can go out to eat and that's for sure, but there's nothing a homegrown tomato won't cure.
Put 'em in a salad, put 'em in a stew, you can make your own, very own tomato juice.
You can eat 'em with eggs, eat 'em with gravy, You can eat 'em with beans, pinto or navy.
Put 'em on the side, put 'em in the middle, homegrown tomatoes on a hot cake griddle.
Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes, what would life be without homegrown tomatoes?

If I was to change this life I lead, you could call me Johnny Tomatoseed.
'Cause I know what this country needs is homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see.

So as to develop great tomatoes that are free from malady, have a decent full delicious body and are abundant on the vine there are 3 scratch angles you have to deal with to get the best from your plants. It includes a little thinking ahead and anticipating your part however the outcomes will try. So precisely what do tomatoes need to develop?

To start with, as is commonly said about land, its area, area, area, tomato plants are genuine sun admirers and should be in the sun for no less than 6 hours daily keeping in mind the end goal to give a lot of organic product on the vine.

Second, they have to get the right supplements to prosper and the place they get them from is the dirt aided along by the right watering program. On the off chance that you are planting the tomatoes in the garden it is fundamental that the ground is appropriately arranged for planting with a lot of manure and additionally compost delved into the dirt to help development. Once planted they ought to be returned to reasonably as often as possible with some kind of nourish and I would suggest this is done at any rate once every week, particularly on the off chance that you see that your plants are hailing a bit. You can either buy authority tomato bolster (bear in mind to allude to their directions) or you can utilize your left finished ground espresso and place this around the base of the plants. Do this and before you know it you will have heaps of dazzling crisp tasting tomatoes.

Try not to think little of exactly how parched your tomato plants are, the point at which I specified the right watering program, this implies never enabling your plants to dry out, particularly critical on the off chance that they are in pots or a develop sack and furthermore make an effort not to stun them with icy water. In the event that you can, store cans of water alongside the plants so the water achieves encompassing temperature then when you have to, move the water into a watering can with a rose fitted so the water can be sprinkled on tenderly. In a perfect world you will water like this a few times per day, recalling that tomatoes likewise don't prefer to be in completely immersed soil.

In the event that that all sounds a bit work escalated, you could introduce a trickle sustain watering framework, there are extraordinary frameworks you can buy for this assignment or you could make up your own framework. One route is to cover plastic water bottles between the plants that have been punctured around the boundary and through the bottoms, the tops are left over the level of the dirt with the goal that they can be re-filled. Its a harsh and prepared however extremely powerful method for guaranteeing the dirt doesn't dry out, as long as you make sure to top the contains obviously. Likewise recollect that when you do water there must be sufficient for a decent profound drench, too little and you will urge your underlying foundations to the surface.

Third is the best possible help of the plant, they should be off the ground and uncertain. Leaving shoots running over the ground will abandon them open to contagious assault and malady. Many individuals take care to prune their plants, evacuating any development beneath the blooming fronds. Ensure that you utilize either a reasonable and sufficiently solid stake or you can utilize tomato confine whichever is your inclination and do it while the plants are as yet youthful with the goal that the roots are not bothered at a later time.

This is the most ideal approach to develop tomatoes that I know, clearly there are some presence of mind moves you have to make also to keep up your plants in a sound condition, for example, expelling dead or dried out leaves and disposing of bugs, yet basically focus on these 3 key angles and you will be well while in transit to a lot of delicious new tomatoes.

Many people simply don’t have access to a decent patch of soil and as a result think that growing tomatoes is beyond their reach. But tomatoes, being what they are, can be easily grown in containers of some sort and are very well suited to being grown in grow-bags.

Ideally you should select a fit for purpose grow-bag, but alternatively a 60 litre bag of multi-purpose compost will serve just as well and will easily support the growth of two tomato plants, three at a stretch. In the UK you can plant your tomatoes in May if you have a greenhouse or June if you are planting outside on a patio or some other suitable spot that gets plenty of sunshine. The planting schedule is effectively driven by the risk of a late frost, or rather ensuring you avoid being caught out by a late frost.

Make sure the grow bag is laying flat with the compost evenly distributed, a quick shake of the bag before laying it down and opening it up for the plants should sort this out. Also make sure you puncture a few small drain holes in the underside before putting the plants in.
Tomatoes have a relatively unique feature in that they can develop roots from their stems and as such it is a good idea to plant them deeply into the soil. Also once planted they will need to be properly supported and when it comes to grow-bags (or compost bags for that matter) there are some nifty devices available on the market that will greatly assist you in that task. These come in the form of Grow-Bag Cane Frames, the frames sit underneath the bag and a cane slots down through the frame into the compost.

Then it is simply a case of loosely tying off the trusses to the cane with a soft garden string as they develop. The weight of the bag on the frame keeps it in place and the frame in turn keeps the cane upright and rigid. All being well, and with the support of a regular watering and feed program, you should start harvesting your tomatoes anytime from mid July through to September.

Remember to pinch out any little side shoots as they appear to ensure the main fruit bearing trusses get all the energy they need from the nutrients.

The best time for when to plant tomatoes in the UK is around the end of May unless you want to grow from seed. No chance of growing from seed at this time of year because you would have to add a further 4 to 6 weeks onto the schedule and you just haven’t got enough time left to do that.

So if you haven’t already cultivated your tomato plants from seed so they are ready for the end of May, you will have to go and buy some tomato plants and quickly. Because they need to be in the ground, a growbag or a 12″ plant pot no later than the 1st week in June.
https://www.almanac.com/sites/default/files/image_nodes/tomatoes.jpg
It is the span of the tomatoes that basically directs to what extent they take to develop, cherry tomatoes for the most part opening into the early season assortment, fair size, for example, plum tomatoes have a tendency to go in the mid season gathering and bigger tomatoes like beefsteak fit in the late season gathering. It's a smart thought to have plants from the diverse assortments to guarantee that you have tomatoes developing all through the entire season.

Considering when you are probably going to see the last ice of the winter, you can really stun when you get your plants into their last spot to additionally expand the season. Reasonably you are likely just going to have the capacity to take one more month in light of the fact that even after April has gone there is still somewhat of a possibility of a late ice.

We really observed snow this year in the South of France amid the principal seven day stretch of May, somewhat of a catastrophe from the tomato developing point of view, particularly on the off chance that you are planting straight into the ground. So as it's been said in Yorkshire, 'ner cast a clout till May is out' which implies don't expel any garments until May is (out significance arrived) so actually you need May to have touched base before you can consider the cool climate has totally wrapped up. this year being an exemption to that govern; such a great amount for an unnatural weather change.

So in outline an opportunity to plant tomatoes in the UK is amid the long stretch of May, however taking consideration not to be gotten by a late ice toward the start of May. Seeds should be developed around a month to a month and a half before that, contingent upon assortment which puts you at the center of to the finish of March. In the UK that may mean you have to begin your seeds inside or in a warmed nursery to get the perfect germination temperature of 16C (61F), yet ideally by then you will be OK.

Obviously in the event that you have the offices accessible, for example, a warmed nursery, you can begin seeds significantly prior maybe around the finish of January, yet you should have the capacity to shield the consequent plants from ice as they are probably going to be prepared toward the start or center of March. They will likewise require some sensible times of sun, preferably no less than 6 to 7 hours per day, not generally simple to drop by amid March, but rather still doable in spite of the fact that they might be somewhat slower developing.

Tomatoes are now the fourth most popular fresh-market vegetable behind potatoes, lettuce, and onions. This article will examine their powerful health benefits, nutritional content, ways to include more tomatoes in the diet, and the risks of tomato consumption.
Nutrition facts of tomatoes:
Tomatoes are packed with nutrients.

One cup of chopped or sliced raw tomatoes contains:

32 calories (kcal)
170.14 g of water
1.58 g of protein
2.2 g of fiber
5.8 g of carbohydrate
0 g cholesterol

Tomatoes also have a wealth of vitamin and mineral content, including:

18 mg of calcium
427 mg of potassium
43 mg of phosphorus
24.7 mg of vitamin C
1499 international units (IU) of vitamin A

Tomatoes also contain a wide array of beneficial nutrients and antioxidants, including:

alpha-lipoic acid
lycopene
choline
folic acid
beta-carotene
lutein

The cooking of tomatoes appears to increase the availability of key nutrients, such as the carotenoids lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Stewed tomatoes provide more lutein and zeaxanthin than sun-dried tomatoes and raw cherry tomatoes.
Diet:
There are easy ways to include the nutritional value of tomatoes in any diet.
Be sure to store fresh tomatoes at room temperature and avoid refrigeration, as this causes tomatoes to lose their flavor.
Incorporate more tomatoes into the diet using the following tips:
Dip grape or cherry tomatoes in hummus or plain yogurt dip and consume them as a side or a snack
Add sliced tomato to sandwiches and wraps.
Add diced, low-sodium canned tomatoes to homemade or jarred marinara sauces when making pasta.
Used canned, diced, or stewed tomatoes in soups
Eat a piece of toast with avocado and tomato slices.
Make a quick salsa with diced tomatoes, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and freshly squeezed lime.
Dice fresh tomatoes and add them to rice and beans, quesadillas, or tacos. Add them to omelets or scrambles for breakfast.
Drizzle freshly sliced tomatoes and sliced mozzarella with balsamic vinegar, and top with chopped basil.
Make a bruschetta as an appetizer. That's all from me.Thank's for the post.@upvoted

Description
Tomato plants are vines, initially decumbent, typically growing 180 cm (6 ft) or more above the ground if supported, although erect bush varieties have been bred, generally 100 cm (3 ft) tall or shorter. Indeterminate types are "tender" perennials, dying annually in temperate climates (they are originally native to tropical highlands), although they can live up to three years in a greenhouse in some cases. Determinate types are annual in all climates.[citation needed]

Tomato plants are dicots, and grow as a series of branching stems, with a terminal bud at the tip that does the actual growing. When that tip eventually stops growing, whether because of pruning or flowering, lateral buds take over and grow into other, fully functional, vines.[8]

Tomato vines are typically pubescent, meaning covered with fine short hairs. These hairs facilitate the vining process, turning into roots wherever the plant is in contact with the ground and moisture, especially if the vine's connection to its original root has been damaged or severed.[citation needed]

Most tomato plants have compound leaves, and are called regular leaf (RL) plants, but some cultivars have simple leaves known as potato leaf (PL) style because of their resemblance to that particular relative. Of RL plants, there are variations, such as rugose leaves, which are deeply grooved, and variegated, angora leaves, which have additional colors where a genetic mutation causes chlorophyll to be excluded from some portions of the leaves.[9]

The leaves are 10–25 cm (4–10 in) long, odd pinnate, with five to 9 leaflets on petioles,[10] each leaflet up to 8 cm (3 in) long, with a serrated margin; both the stem and leaves are densely glandular-hairy.[citation needed]

Their flowers, appearing on the apical meristem, have the anthers fused along the edges, forming a column surrounding the pistil's style. Flowers in domestic cultivars can be self-fertilizing. The flowers are 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) across, yellow, with five pointed lobes on the corolla; they are borne in a cyme of three to 12 together.[citation needed]

Tomato fruit is classified as a berry. As a true fruit, it develops from the ovary of the plant after fertilization, its flesh comprising the pericarp walls. The fruit contains hollow spaces full of seeds and moisture, called locular cavities. These vary, among cultivated species, according to type. Some smaller varieties have two cavities, globe-shaped varieties typically have three to five, beefsteak tomatoes have a great number of smaller cavities, while paste tomatoes have very few, very small cavities.[citation needed]

For propagation, the seeds need to come from a mature fruit, and be dried or fermented before germination.

Classification
In 1753, Linnaeus placed the tomato in the genus Solanum (alongside the potato) as Solanum lycopersicum. In 1768, Philip Miller moved it to its own genus, naming it Lycopersicon esculentum.[11] This name came into wide use, but was technically in breach of the plant naming rules because Linnaeus's species name lycopersicum still had priority. Although the name Lycopersicum lycopersicum was suggested by Karsten (1888), this is not used because it violates the International Code of Nomenclature[12] barring the use of tautonyms in botanical nomenclature. The corrected name Lycopersicon lycopersicum (Nicolson 1974) was technically valid, since Miller's genus name and Linnaeus's species name differ in exact spelling, but since Lycopersicon esculentum had become so well known, it was officially listed as a nomen conservandum in 1983, and would be the correct name for the tomato in classifications which do not place the tomato in the genus Solanum.

Genetic evidence has now shown that Linnaeus was correct to put the tomato in the genus Solanum, making Solanum lycopersicum the correct name.[1][13] Both names, however, will probably be found in the literature for some time. Two of the major reasons that some[who?] still consider the genera separate are the leaf structure (tomato leaves are markedly different from any other Solanum), and the biochemistry (many of the alkaloids common to other Solanum species are conspicuously absent in the tomato). Hybrids of tomato and diploid potato can be created in the lab by somatic fusion, and are partially fertile,[14] providing evidence of the close relationship between these species.

Genetic modification
Main article: Genetically modified tomato
Tomatoes that have been modified using genetic engineering have been developed, and although none are commercially available now, they have been in the past. The first commercially available genetically modified food was a variety of tomato named the Flavr Savr, which was engineered to have a longer shelf life.[15] Scientists are continuing to develop tomatoes with new traits not found in natural crops, such as increased resistance to pests or environmental stresses. Other projects aim to enrich tomatoes with substances that may offer health benefits or provide better nutrition.

Research on tomatoes
An international consortium of researchers from 10 countries, among them researchers from the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, began sequencing the tomato genome in 2004, and is creating a database of genomic sequences and information on the tomato and related plants.[16][17] A prerelease version of the genome was made available in December 2009.[18] The genomes of its mitochondria and chloroplasts are also being sequenced as part of the project. The complete genome for the cultivar Heinz 1706 was published on 31 May 2012 in Nature.[19] Since many other fruits, like strawberries, apples, melons, and bananas share the same characteristics and genes, researchers stated the published genome could help to improve food quality, food security and reduce costs of all of these fruits.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a very important vegetable used in almost all meals and is consumed in diverse ways. In Ghana, farmers and consumers of fruits and vegetables face immense risk of exposure owing to the use of toxic chemicals that are banned or restricted in the country or in other countries. The objective of this study was to ascertain farmers’ access and use of recommended agro-chemicals for the production of tomatoes in three sampled farming communities in Northern Ghana. Sixty semi-structured questionnaires were administered and data analysed using Minitab Statistical package with T-test for significance. Various agro-chemicals were used by farmers which include: those not suitable for tomatoes production; unapproved or banned agro-chemicals and those suitable for tomatoes production. Communities which produced the “Burkina” variety used about 70% of the sampled pesticides compared with 30% for the “Wosowoso” variety. The agro-chemical most used (32.8%) was Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) though banned from the Ghana registered list of pesticides. Farmers have access to, and use agro-chemicals for tomato production in the study areas. Farmers therefore need to be sensitized on the use of recommended and appropriate agrochemicals and the hazards associated with the use for the crop, farmer and environment.
Chemical Treatment for Diseases
While some diseases that attack tomatoes do not react to chemical treatments, some may subside if plants are treated with bactericide and fungicide compounds. You can use sprays that contain copper and sulfur to ward off a number of tomato diseases that damage foliage, fruit and stems. The sprays act as a protectant and help to control the spread of bacterial speck, bacterial spot and powdery mildew. The best time to apply copper spray is during cool, moist periods before diseases develop or at the first signs of infection and at 10- to 14-day intervals. Use sulfur spray as soon as symptoms of powdery mildew appear on plants.

Chemical Treatment for Pests
Broad- and narrow-range chemical pesticides include one or more synthetic active ingredients. These commercially available spray insecticides and miticides control and kill sap-sucking insects, mites, leafhoppers, garden centipedes, beetles and other insects. Chemical ingredients may include carbaryl, abamectin, acetamiprid, cyfluthrin, cyromazine, dimethoate, dinotefuran, endosulfan, esfenvalerate, fenpropathrin, imidacloprid, indoxacarb, malathion, methamidophos, methomyl, methoxyfenozide, oxamyl, pymetrozine, pyrethrin, pyriproxyfen, spinosad and spiromesifen. Some of these chemicals, including carbaryl and dimethoate, may affect the population of beneficial insects, such as honeybees, for weeks or months. Diazinon is available in granular form and has no long-term affects on beneficial insects.

Low-Toxicity Treatments
Some low-toxicity pesticides from natural ingredients may help control insects such as whiteflies and stink bugs. They include spray oils of neem, rosemary or peppermint. Insecticidal soap and kaolin clay also help manage pests. Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt, is a naturally occurring bacteria used to treat crop-feeding insects. Insecticide sprays contain Bt help to control tomato pests such as looper caterpillars, hornworms, tomato fruitworm and western yellowstriped armyworm.

Cultural Control
Cultural control is the most effective means to deal with many pests and diseases, especially those that do not respond to chemicals. Rotate crops to help prevent disease. Crop rotation helps plants escape the seasonal cycle of soil-borne pathogens that may be dormant in the winter but attack plants in spring and summer. Avoiding overhead watering helps to keep plants dry so accumulated water does not lead to the development of mold. Cleaning and disinfecting garden tools in between use can prevent the spread of fungal spores from plant to plant. If you want a better chance of fewer disease problems, plant disease-resistant tomato cultivars.

You have an excellent harvest. For us, unfortunately, in the last 2 years tomatoes are sick with late blight, this disease begins after heavy rains, after which the tomatoes are covered with black spots and can not be eaten. The only way to plant tomatoes in greenhouses. But greenhouses are expensive and not all have.

it is a very good hobby, it gives you hope to see your seeds progress until the day you can consume them.I would like, even if it is impossible for the moment to have the opportunity to plant seeds of some fruits and vegetables for daily consumption to consume only local products because it is beneficial to health.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmSNwGekgGbeEZUdHNQzxUGU1CbzpTPTUk9nSUKHum5rdW/images%20(1).jpg]

Plant directly in the ground, if possible. You can plant almost any variety and don’t have to water your plants as often as you would if they were in containers.
Create raised beds. This is a great option if you’re concerned about pollutants in your soil. You could even replace the soil if disease breaks out or if necessary. The non-compact soil allows for better drainage and aeration than in-ground gardens.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmer6gRCx8b26KW7L7Z352PnsNUfkzUQ6yB4knHRwn6AeP/images.jpg]

Use containers if you have limited space. Some containers are more portable than others. They’re great if you don’t have much yard space. However, they require more frequent watering, since the soil dries out quickly. You’ll also need to invest in additional support structures if you live in a climate that gets high winds.

Install window boxes in upper-story windows. You can water and harvest your tomatoes simply by opening your window. You’ll also have to deal with fewer pests the higher up you live. Stick with small varieties like cherry tomatoes to avoid toppling.
Hang your plant(s). Choose this option if you want to avoid stooping over your plants. Because they’re not in or close to the ground, you’ll have to water them more frequently. They also need strong hardware to anchor them in place.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmVv8eQPamuXjFzQtgiQa9RmzzLmSZ4iG9nA2B14P7CWMx/images%20(3).jpg]

Buy your plants. You can find tomato plants at nurseries, garden centers, and even at farmers’ markets. Choose healthy looking plants and make sure to buy the tomato plants close to when you plan on planting them.
Add lots of compost to the garden soil. Tomatoes demand a growing medium rich in organic matter. If you don't make your own compost, use store-bought compost that includes granite dust and topsoil. You'll need about 5 to 8 pounds per square foot (25 to 40 kilograms per square meter). Turn compost into the top 3 inches (6 to 8 cm).

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmXJrYdvMXZ64xTSZGjSnmYQKUHHR2osqUpbiaBsbe8zis/images%20(6).jpg]

Monitor the soil pH. Tomatoes thrive in mildly acidic soil. Highly acidic soil can leach calcium from the plant and lead to blossom end rot. Keep the soil pH between 6.0 and 6.8. If your soil tests above 6.8, water your tomatoes with a mixture of equal parts cold coffee and water. You could also add a mulch pf pine needles. If your soil tests below 6.0, use either dolomite lime or calcium sources like crushed eggshells or calcite.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmRQn2Pk7toepE5pNCRFK7VjrbwN9jCYaFcmCM9FcfYihN/images%20(4).jpg]

Choose a sunny spot. Place tomato plants in full sun. If you live in a cooler growing zone, aim for at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. If you live in a warm to hot zone, pick a spot that gets some shade in the afternoon.
Space the plants 18 to 36 inches (45 to 90 cm) apart. This is usually enough space to allow you to get in between the plants to water, weed, and harvest. If you live in a hot climate, space plants 9 to 18 inches (23 to 46 cm) apart. This distance allows plants in cages to shade each other’s fruit, preventing burn.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmeTNMnYd2bqDRd3fH6Essqy2Kn8toLsbjBWEY4vmvg2ZW/images%20(2).jpg]

Transplant the plant deeply. Bury about 50 to 80 percent of the plant. Pack the soil firmly around the roots. Make sure the roots are completely covered.[9] Make sure to trim off the lower leaves of the plant and do not bury them. If you bury them then they will rot.
Cage or stake your tomatoes. This supports the tomato vine. Set them up at the time of planting. Don’t wait more than 14 days.
Water every 7 to 10 days. Do this after the first week. Give them about 16 ounces (about 500 mL) of warm water per plant every day.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmYsvtjQXnemsNp1ouS7V1WgFT17unkDPi9WHRNu953afK/images%20(7).jpg]

Choose a fertilizer. Tomatoes can grow very well organically if the soil is enriched with organic matter. If you choose a chemical fertilizer, look for a vegetable fertilizer.
Shake your plant poles or cages gently. This increases fruit production by evenly distributing pollen.
Beat the heat. If you live in a hot climate, grow heat-tolerant varieties like Phoenix, Heatmaster, and Solar Fire.
Prevent blossom-end rot. Blossom-end rot is the blackening and eating away of the bottom of a tomato fruit. Once you see it, it’s too late to save the plant. Prevention is your best bet. Calcium deficiency causes blossom-end rot.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmTGrR1NiyU1GgRuJgu4CT7aTMfeBia2JqAnUYYwbJz6hU/download.jpg]

Control slugs with cardboard. Use the cardboard rolls from toilet paper or paper towels around the bottom the stem while the plant is still young. The texture of the cardboard makes the stem impossible for slugs to climb.
Grow plants that attract beneficial predators. Some good choices are calendula, zinnias, marigolds, and nasturtiums. The ladybugs and braconid wasps they attract get to eat the aphids and hornworms that would otherwise destroy your tomatoes.

Tomato winter season vegetable plants.
Its very testy and healty for our.tomato one of favorite vegetable in world.
Some information tomatoes plant given below;

How to Choose Tomatoes;

Choosing tomato varieties can be confusing because there are so many, so use our Tomato Chooser to help you pick the best for your garden.
Our article “Learn Tomato Terms” explains some basic (but important) tomato terms, such as hybrid, indeterminate vs. determinate, and VFN (disease resistance).
It’s a good idea to grow a range of varieties, including at least one or two disease-resistant types, since, of all veggies, tomatoes tend to be the most susceptible to disease.

Tomato plant roots: growing tomatoes, how to grow tomatoes
Tomato plants grow long roots, which is why it’s so important to water deeply.[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmcdBCF8DdxDCyRb1u6jeJzvs6KrZPtySHpNvfzUPGzCVy/tomato-plant-roots.jpg]

How to Plant and Care for Tomatoes;

Tomatoes run on warmth; plant in late spring and early summer except in zone 10, where they are a fall and winter crop.
Devote a prime, sunny spot to growing tomatoes. Tomatoes need at least 6 to 8 hours of sun to bring out their best flavors.
You will need to stake, trellis, or cage most tomato plants to keep them off the ground. Decide on a support plan before you set out your plants, then add that support directly after planting.
Give each plant enough room to grow. Space robust, long-vined, indeterminate varieties about 3 feet apart. Stockier determinate plants can be grown 2 feet apart. If growing in containers, you’ll need at least a 24-inch pot for an indeterminate variety, or an 18-inch pot for a determinate variety. Be sure to fill containers with premium quality potting mix, such as Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix, for best growth.
Tomatoes take up nutrients best when the soil pH ranges from 6.2 to 6.8, and they need a constant supply of major and minor plant nutrients. To provide needed nutrients, mix a continuous-release fertilizer with calcium, like Miracle-Gro® Shake ‘n Feed® Tomato, Fruit & Vegetable Plant Food, into the soil as you prepare the planting holes. (Be sure to read and follow all directions.) This will help protect fruit from blossom end rot, a problem that can occur when the plant isn’t getting enough calcium.
At the same time, mix in 3 to 4 inches of compost, which will provide minor nutrients and help hold moisture and fertilizer in the soil until it is needed by the plants.
Soaker hose around tomato plant: growing tomatoes, how to grow tomatoes
A soaker hose waters a tomato plant well and without waste. Cover with mulch once it’s in place.
To grow a really strong tomato plant, we recommend burying two-thirds of the stem when planting. This crucial step will allow the plant to sprout roots along the buried stem, so your plant will be stronger and better able to find water in a drought. Please note that this deep-planting method only works with tomatoes (and tomatillos), not other veggies.
Immediately after planting, water seedlings to help settle them in.
You can combine fast-maturing varieties with special season-stretching techniques to grow an early crop, but wait until the last frost has passed to plant main-season tomatoes.
Cover the ground with 2 to 4 inches of mulch to minimize weeds and help keep the soil evenly moist. Straw and shredded leaves make great mulches for tomatoes.
Water regularly, aiming for at least an inch of moisture per week (through rain or watering), more in the summertime. Feel the soil; if the top inch is dry, it’s time to water.[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmbrYhuvCuWLF2RKVNScP6gLodZrsCazQwuvNzD3D9n8wK/soaker-hose-tomato.jpg]

How to Troubleshoot Tomato Problems;

Tomato blossoms: growing tomatoes, how to grow tomatoes
Tomato blossoms can be temperamental. If it’s too cool (below 55˚) or too hot (above 90˚), the flowers of most varieties will pause from setting fruit until the temperature is back where they like it.
As summer heats up, some tomatoes have trouble setting fruit. Be patient, and you will start seeing little green tomatoes again when nights begin cooling down. Meanwhile, promptly harvest ripe tomatoes to relieve stressed plants of their heavy burden. If you live in an area in which summertime temperatures are typically in the 90s, be sure to choose some heat-tolerant tomato varieties, bred for their ability to set fruit under high temperatures.
If summer droughts are common in your area, or you tend to forget to water, use soaker hoses, drip irrigation, or other drought-busting techniques to help maintain even soil moisture. Not only will this help prevent cracked fruits, but also help keep blossom end rot at bay. (Moisture fluctuations can reduce the amount of calcium the plant is able to take up, which can lead to blossom end rot.)
Humid weather creates ideal conditions for fungal diseases like early blight, which causes dark spots to first form on lower leaves. Be sure to remove any unhealthy looking or diseased leaves throughout the season. Late blight is a more devastating disease that kills plants quickly; the only way to control it is to protect against it by spraying the leaves with an approved fungicide such as chlorothalonil or copper, and to keep the garden clean of plant debris.
You’ll also want to be on the lookout for pests. In mid-summer, for example, big green caterpillars called tomato hornworms eat tomato foliage and sometimes damage fruits. One or two hornworms can strip a plant leafless in short order! Deal with pests as soon as you spot them.
By late summer, plants that began producing early in the season will show signs of exhaustion. With just a little effort, you can extend the life of those sad tomato plants by pruning away withered leaves and branches. Then follow up with liquid plant food and treatments for leaf diseases or insects, if needed.

How to Harvest and Store Tomatoes;

Ripening tomatoes: growing tomatoes, how to grow tomatoes
This cluster of tomatoes shows several stages of ripening. Tomatoes ripen to different colors depending on the variety.
As tomatoes begin to ripen, their color changes from vibrant medium-green to a lighter shade, with faint pink or yellow blushing. These “breakers,” or mature green tomatoes, can be chopped into salsas, pickled, or pan-fried into a crispy appetizer. Yet tomato flavors become much more complex as the fruits ripen, so you have good reason to wait. The exact signs of ripeness vary with variety, but in general, perfectly ripe tomatoes show deep color yet still feel firm when gently squeezed.
Store picked tomatoes at room temperature indoors, or in a shady place outside. Never refrigerate tomatoes, because temperatures below 55° cause the precious flavor compounds to break down.
Bumper crops can be frozen, canned, or dried for future use[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmQ818xH7ZUB2a2T7odxxSH9YXaJq7ZdG37ZHLbPQd7nnk/tomato-cluster-ripening.jpg]

Another beautiful plant tomatoes.tomatoes very good vegetables

Plant and care for Tomatomes;

A very important vegetable plant you discuss today.

Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops for the home gardener to grow simply because their flavour is so much better than their shop bought cousins. Tomatoes grown for the supermarket shelf have been bred to travel well and look good on the shelves for as long as possible; tickling your taste buds is not their number one priority.[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmX3FPbG9MD8zF1S85eDVuK7rVEzJLrEUQzLmn18tQht1f/1-2.jpg]

Many commercially produced tomatoes are also grown in soilless environments using an artificial fertilizer solution and are picked before they are ripe; both of these practices result in tomatoes that look nice but don’t taste great. Research has also shown that organic, homegrown tomatoes have a much more complex chemistry than commercially produced fruits. Not only does chemistry equal a greater depth of flavour, it is also likely that homegrown tomatoes are healthier with higher levels of the pigment ‘Lycopene’. Lycopene has been shown to help unclog blocked arteries and is thought to be one of the reasons the Mediterranean diet is so healthy.[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmTXHNvvGho9zayFXwHfb5M5a7197JLSKqnYwEHCpkNTzj/1-1.jpg]

Tomato white wonderThe other big bonus with growing your own tomatoes is the amazing variety of size, shape, colour and flavour there is available. A bit like the potato (they are, of course, close relations) there are a huge range of different types for very large ‘beefsteak’ varieties to small and sweet ‘cherry’ fruits. They are fun to grow and give such a great reward that they have to be one of stars of the home vegetable plot[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmdPFuPJmvcUEZUXp2W4dheMTSDKGt56RwbB73rzCbpcz4/1.jpg]

Oh yeah, great photos and you tomatoes look healthy and with a good harvest. Mulch - this is any material that is laid on the surface of the soil, in order to regulate its air and water regime. As it can act natural components or artificially created substances.
The benefits of mulching tomatoes in the open ground or in a greenhouse are: protection of the earth's surface from drying out; Under the layer of mulch, sunlight does not penetrate, which does not allow us to grow weeds;
the layer that comes into contact with the soil begins to rot in time and feeds worms, naturally fertilizing the soil under the tomatoes.

http://superda4nik.ru/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/mulchiruem-pomidory.jpg

What is useful for mulching tomatoes with straw?
It is great for filling row spacing, not just covering the open ground in beds with tomatoes. In addition to all other advantages of mulch, straw enriches the soil with organic substances.
In addition, it creates the optimum soil temperature. This is especially important when growing tomatoes in the open ground. Because the straw does not allow the soil to cool quickly after a sudden spring frost. So, the metabolism between all parts of the plant will not be disturbed, because the root system will function normally.
Another benefit of straw is that stunted plants, whose fruits fall to the ground, are protected from the effects of the earth. Tomatoes lie on the straw, which means they do not deteriorate.

How To Grow Your Own Tomatoes:
Many commercially produced tomatoes are also grown in soilless environments using an artificial fertilizer solution and are picked before they are ripe; both of these practices result in tomatoes that look nice but don’t taste great. Research has also shown that organic, homegrown tomatoes have a much more complex chemistry than commercially produced fruits. Not only does chemistry equal a greater depth of flavour, it is also likely that homegrown tomatoes are healthier with higher levels of the pigment ‘Lycopene’. [IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmbh9yBTPUMqDG5joD6yKL4zmMrAbDLWCUrt2WS5ouMgEj/01.jpg]

Growth Habits:
The typical tall type plant most people will be familiar with. They are usually grown up twine or bamboo supports and consist of a single long stem. Cordon varieties produce side shoots which will grow into large lateral branches; they will need to be removed as they appear to keep the required growth habit. Allowing the lateral branches to spread will result in a congested plant and a lower yield of ripe fruit.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmWeG5owPb4EGHR4dMX8kq9mkCKA9VGMv9A9g5iHQHb6Lk/02.jpg]

Where to Grow:
Tomatoes require a very fertile soil. Remember a healthy plant may be up to 2 metres tall and produce hundreds of fruit while taking up a relatively small space (a cabbage takes up more room and only produces a single head!). Prepare your beds by adding plenty of well rotted manure at planting time, as much as a full wheelbarrow every 3 square meters.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmdYrEfwHnkwAjQnguaLdZmE9Q1EWe6XmnUp1xrrMeaz3K/04.jpg]

When to Grow:
Sow seed indoors in late February to mid March using a heated propagator or a warm, South facing windowsill. The temperature of the compost should be approx 22 degrees celsius for the seeds to germinate; young plants will also need to be kept warm until early Summer when the soil temperature is above at least 10 degrees.Tomatoes can be sown in seed trays and pricked out to larger pots but I prefer to sow in modular trays and pot on to a larger 10cm pot after the third leaf has formed. Seeds should be sown 2cm or 3/4 inch deep in a low nutrient seed compost and potted on to a richer potting compost.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmacaR6BmGKW6smfcGU3uRvAjxpZZ4AU4GyBDP1ywcuSXU/05.jpg]

Transplanting:
Dig a hole for each plant (45cm / 18in apart) in the bed to about 5cm / 2in deeper than the pot. If you are growing indeterminate or cordon varieties you will need to provide support. You can do this by burying a length of twine under the root ball when planting and tying the other end to a support above the plant, this is easy in a polytunnel where you can tie on to crop support bars. For outdoor planting there are a wide range of tomato supports available.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmXEATngdvk1ZKT9DcMD2P8acmKNtM4BbT18FaWr2FnRRU/07.jpg]

Transplanting Leggy Plants:
If your tomatoes are a bit leggy and elongated you can partially remedy this by planting deeper than normal and burying up to 2/3 of the plant including the lower sets of leaves. Tomato stems have the ability to grow roots from buried stems you can build a deeper and more extensive root system this way.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmVv8eQPamuXjFzQtgiQa9RmzzLmSZ4iG9nA2B14P7CWMx/08.jpg]

Tomato Crop Care:
If fruit is slow to set in early Summer tap the plant support around midday to encourage the spread of pollen. If you are growing in a greenhouse or polytunnel keep well ventilated especially on hot days to prevent the build up of pests and disease.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmQBUPeFnejQa7ZpwnBdT1q6cVrMep1pxGboMTeurMvztn/10.jpg]

Watering:
Water well when planting out and then lightly until the fruit starts to set. Once fruit is setting water well with 12 litres (2 gallons) per plant at least on a weekly basis. Letting the soil dry out between waterings has been shown to improve flavour but be careful with this as drought conditions followed by heavy watering can cause a growth spurt which results in split fruit. Watering will take a little practice but keeping plants slightly on the dry side will intensify flavour.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmToaYRAQAizQAqWHVKjgxVGec2P4cju53oRsgjHYygHGH/11.jpg]

Tomato Troubles:
Few pests or diseases trouble outdoor tomatoes, failure is usually caused by wet or cold weather. Leaves turning mottled, purple veined or reddish under leaves is usually caused by nutrient deficiency caused by low temperatures. Roots are unable to absorb nutrients when the temperature is cold. This can also be the cause of blossom end rot.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmUuxZXFNyToWJQgvP557rX2nye5Jp5yyYxcMY7WdAYPFc/13.jpg]

Pests and Diseases:
Whitefly are the most likely pest to affect your tomatoes. The adult flies (they look like tiny moths) lay eggs on the underside of leaves. The growing eggs feed on the leaves, leaving a sticky secretion which attracts other diseases. As soon as you see the eggs, try spraying with water to wash them off and remove others by hand. There is an excellent biological control available, a tiny wasp which feeds on whitefly. 'Encarsia Formosa' eggs are available mail order and should be used at the first signs of attack, if the plants have already become infested it is too late.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmXJrYdvMXZ64xTSZGjSnmYQKUHHR2osqUpbiaBsbe8zis/12.jpg]

Harvesting:
Pick as soon as the fruits are ripe (colour and size will identify this) for the best flavour - eat as soon as possible. This also encourages the production of more fruit. As soon as a frost threatens in October/November, harvest all the fruit immediately and ripen them on a window sill. With upright varieties, it is possible to gently flatten the plants and cover with horticultural fleece to protect them from frost.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmZLeCmEaA3grbLWtJ45dRYkfhxRxtdpYpcHNWKSkg1Vhj/images5.jpg]

Storage:
Wash and dry your tomatoes before storing. Unless you're planning to store your tomatoes for over a week, a windowsill, counter-top or bowl works fine. If you know you won't use them in the next few days, then lower temperatures will help preserve the fruit. Storing in a fridge is not recommended, as the cooler temperatures can reduce flavour and cause mushiness. Your fresh-picked tomatoes should last longer on the kitchen counter than supermarket-bought ones, which are probably a few days old when you get them.

Tomatoes is very healty vegetable.

The tomato is the edible, often red, vegetable of the plant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant. The plant belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in western South America.[2][3] The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato derived. Its use as a cultivated food may have originated with the indigenous peoples of México. The Spanish discovered the tomato from their contact with the Aztec peoples during the Spanish colonization of the Americas, then brought it to Europe, and, from there, to other parts of the European colonized world during the 16th century.

Tomato is consumed in diverse ways, including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes, sauces, salads, and drinks. While tomatoes are botanically berry-type fruits, they are considered culinary vegetables as an ingredient or side dish for savory meals. Numerous varieties of tomato are widely grown in temperate climates across the world, with greenhouses allowing its production throughout the year. The plants typically grow to 1–3 meters (3–10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that sprawls. It is a perennial in its native habitat, and cultivated as an annual. Ain't nothin' in the world that I like better
Than bacon & lettuce & homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin' out in the garden
Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one

Plant em in the spring eatem in the summer
All winter with out `em's a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin'
Every time I go out & pick me a big'n

Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes

You can go out to eat & that's for sure
But it's nothin' a homegrown tomato won't cure
Put em in a salad, putem in a stew
You can make your very own tomato juice

Eat em with eggs, eatem with gravy
Eat em with beans, pinto or navy Putem on the side put `em in the middle
Put a homegrown tomato on a hotcake griddle

If I's to change this life I lead
I'd be Johnny Tomato Seed
`Cause I know what this country needs
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see

When I die don't bury me
In a box in a cemetary
Out in the garden would be much better
I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes

Tomato; It is a herbaceous, one-year-old vegetable plant of the Oceans class, the Eggplant family. It is known for the first time in South America. After the discovery of America, Spain, Portugal, Italy spread to the world. He likes warm and warm humid climates. Mediterranean and tropical countries can be cultivated all year. It grows everywhere except the high places in Turkey. It is 50-200 cm long with a very branched, feathered body, the leaves are green with feathers. Body and leaves are specially fragrant. In the case of flowers, yellow, clusters, flowers are covered with leaves and sex organs. Fruit is meat (flat, round, oval and sliced) raw while green, maturity red, purplish or yellow. The seeds are buried in the fruit. The root is the fringed side root. The fruit contains protein, carbohydrate, calcium, beta carotene, vitamins B, C and K, minerals. Tomato plants have 12 species that naturally grow.

Tree tomato grows in tropical America. This tree, 3-4 m long, is sweet and slightly bitter, like tomatoes, eaten fresh and preserved. Balkan tomatoes and Baltimore tomatoes are also widely known species. Production is done with seed, the fidelity obtained is surprising when it has two leaves. Then the garden, fields and greenhouses are planted. It is attached to poles in all sizes, all kinds (sandy soil, heavy soil) are grown in the soil. He likes fertile land. In recent years, tomato greenhouse is given importance.

Morphological characteristics of tomato :

The tomato plant, with 1-3 meters of paint, has a slightly woody body. The leaves, 10 to 25 cm long, have 5-9 leaflets. The leaves are hairy. It is 3-12 pieces on a stem with 1-2 cm length and usually yellow tomatoes. The generic red, renewable fruit is 1-2 cm in diameter in wild plants, but it is bigger in culture plants.

History of Tomatoes History :
In 1893, the court in the United States categorized it as vegetable because it was hiding together with vegetables. Tomato has an interesting history. In Bolivia and Peru, a wild yellow tomato was found and then raised in Mexico and sent to Europe by Christopher Columbus after the discovery of America.

The Italians called it the Golden Apple because of the yellow color, but not so long ago the red species emerged. Tomatoes were first raised in the United States by Thomas Jefferson. But many people refused to eat, believing that they were poisoned, until 1900. Long ago, it was a love affair for many Europeans, because it was believed to make people romantic.

HOMEGROWN TOMATOES

Homegrown tomatoes are the best. Every year I plant a cherry tomato and have always had success in getting a bumper crop. Last year, for the first time, squirrels had been stealing lots of tomatoes as soon as they ripen. So while you can try to keep them out of your yard, it’s usually better to outsmart them. To protect your homegrown tomatoes against squirrels wrap individual plant of tomatoes in small pieces of bird netting. Squirrels seem to be most interested in stealing tomatoes just as they ripen, so wrap the mature fruits and ignore the green ones.

I also buy directly from farm, off season I don’t have a choice and I buy it from grocery store. Not the choice I prefer, bought tomatoes from store are usually picked while still green and ripen by the time they hit the shelves. Ripened tomatoes taste much better than tomatoes that have been picked green and then ripened.

There are hundreds of tomato varieties. From marble-sized grape or cherry tomatoes, to juicy salad tomatoes, meaty paste tomatoes, and huge, sweet, beefsteak tomatoes. Their colors range from deep crimson to orange, yellow, green, purple, and chocolate. My favorite tomato varieties so far are Big Boy, Cherry and Beefsteak (heirloom) tomatoes.

The Big Boy tomato is a classic variety that has great flavor. This is a big, sandwich-type slicer with smooth, bright red fruit. Big Boy tomatoes are resistant to cracking.

  • Extra-large fruit
  • Rich flavor
  • 1 slice covers a sandwich
  • Indeterminate, grows tall and produces throughout season

Cherry tomato plants produce sweet, small gems that are easy to grow, and they ripen quickly. So flavorful, it's tough to resist eating them straight from the vine. They're wonderful as a healthy fresh snack or tossed into salads.

  • Bright orange, red or yellow when ripe
  • Intensely sweet flavor
  • Heat-tolerant
  • Indeterminate, grows tall and produces throughout season
  • Disease resistant

Beefsteak (heirloom) tomatoes are delicious, flavorful, meaty fruits have smooth shoulders, not as rough and ridgy as Beefsteak and the blossom end scars are smaller.

  • Delicious, flavorful, meaty fruits.
  • Luscious red fruits averaging 17 oz.
  • Prefers full sun (6+ hours) and well-drained soils. Grows to be 6-8 feet tall. Fruit size is large and will weigh about 1 pound
  • Plant 2-3 feet apart with 3-4 feet between rows.

All three varieties of homegrown tomatoes are perfect combination with salad. Our family’s favorite classic cucumber and tomato salad just got better with the addition of avocado, a light and flavorful lemon dressing and the freshness of cilantro. Easy, excellent avocado salad.

What should be considered when growing tomatoes?
1.Slightly till the soil warms to prevent the growth of weeds, then lay the mulch so that the weeds are dead and the soil is kept.
2.It is better to water the tomatoes in small quantities a few times, and once in the depths.
3.Avoid wetting the leaves because wet leaves are more likely to catch disease.
4.Coating the plant around with the fertilizer 2-3 times during the growing season will increase the growth and health of the vegetable.
5.If you connect the grains to the grate, you may need to prune to get higher yield. Pruned tomatoes take up less space and produce 2 weeks earlier than non-pruned ones.
6.Tomato pruning is different from tree and shrub budamount. You just have to do it with your fingers. You should take absorbents that are derived from the main or lateral stems of the leaves and in the form of small shoots.
7.If you live in a warm place, leave some absorbents on top and in the middle to protect the tomatoes from scalding. When boiled, they form light gray spots on the tomato, which causes the disease.
8.Once the tomatoes reach the top of the rim, you can cut off their tips to give them more flowers and fruit.
9.If you grow tomatoes in pots, you need too much sun, plenty of water and fertile soil.
[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmTDSuS3k5YwgNj3Ntj8GAg9Pe5Se1VawXC37zubdR8ejF/tomatoes3onvine.jpg]

How should the tomato be collected?
1.If the tomatoes are ripe, begin to check the sprouts every day for the best when they are the best. Gently bend or cut the tomato you decide to sum up, supporting the sprouts to avoid damage.
2.Mature tomatoes can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks, but their taste decreases over time.
3.Green tomatoes mature when kept in a warm place without exposure to direct sunlight. Wrap it in the newspaper to slowly ripen it. Put it in a dark, cool place. Check frequently to be sure they are decayed.
4.To continue to obtain fresh tomatoes, cut off a few healthy sprouts and plant. Then take a big pot. Place warm and sunny place one time. If you care, you get fresh tomatoes for winter.

HOMEGROWN TOMATOES & IT’S HEALTH BENEFITS!

Homegrown Tomatoes are commonly called vegetables, but they are actually fruits. They are eaten raw or used in cooking. Canned tomatoes and tomato juice are also popular. Tomatoes are grown in all mild regions of the world. They belong to the nightshade family.

Tomato plants generally have many spreading branches. The leaves are hairy and have a strong smell. The flowers are yellow and hang in clusters. The fruit is about 0.5 to 3 inches (1.3 to 7.6 centimeters) across. It can be round or oval or shaped like a pear. When ripe, the fruit is usually red or yellow.

Tomatoes contain many small seeds surrounded by jellylike pulp. This pulp contains most of the tomato’s vitamin C as well as other huge health benefits. The tomato plant reproduces sexually, meaning that it requires both female and male organs to produce seeds. Every tomato seed has a tiny tomato plant inside. When the conditions are just right, tomato seeds will germinate.

HERE ARE HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATING TOMATOES:

Improves vision: Vitamin A, present in tomatoes, helps to improve your eyesight as well as prevent night-blindness and macular degeneration.

Helps fight cancer: According to studies, tomatoes contain large amounts of the antioxidant lycopene, that is effective in lowering the risk of cancer, especially lung, stomach and prostrate cancers.

Maintaining blood health: Research suggests that a single tomato can provide about 40% of the daily vitamin C requirement and also contains vitamin A, potassium, and iron that is essential for maintaining normal blood health. Vitamin K, which is controls bleeding and blood clotting, tomatoes help in blood circulation.

Reduces risk of heart disease: The lycopene in tomatoes can protect you against cardiovascular diseases. Consuming tomatoes regularly helps decrease the levels of cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood, reducing the deposition of fats in the blood vessels.

Good for digestion: Eating tomatoes daily can keep your digestive system healthy as it prevents both, constipation and diarrhoea. It also prevents jaundice and effectively removes toxins from the body.

Another wonderful and interesting garderning post by @ctrl-alt-nwo sir...
Tomatoes are available in a huge range of sizes and colors. To narrow down the choices, figure out where you are going to grow the plants.
[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmepzazzq5CNcyxrC7wXkNNa2Esp1Qp8dTfN1WGY85AQir/images%20(26).jpeg]

Some like them red, some like them yellow, orange or even purple. Some prefer tomatoes as tiny as a dime and some want them as big as a melon. Some like them juicy, some like them dense and pulpy. Fortunately, there are mroe than 700 different tomato varieties in cultivation today. Plenty of choices for everyone.

If you're trying to decide which tomato varieties to grow, here's what I think about:

  1. disease resistance
  2. growth habit
  3. time to maturity
  4. flavor and texture

I think Disease resistance is important, because tomatoes are vulnerable to a number of diseases that can weaken the plant and reduce yields. Look at the seed packet or plant label to see if the variety has resistance to verticillium and fusarium wilt, two very common soil-borne diseases that affect tomatoes. Resistance to these diseases is designated by a V or F after the variety name. If tomatoes in your region suffer from root-knot nematode (N), Tobacco Mosaic virus (T) or Alternaria (A), look for resistance to these diseases as well. Late blight is a problem in many areas, so choose a variety that's resistant...
Wel done and perfect work sir...
Cheers~~

How exactly, do tomatoes help you? Let’s look at the numerous health benefits of eating them and find out:

  1. Low in fat and calories: At just 18 calories per 100 grams, they are low in calories as well as fat, with zero cholesterol. Which makes them great for your waistline and your heart.

  2. Heart healthy: 0 cholesterol, plus high levels of potassium, niacin, folate and fiber make tomatoes great for your heart. Fiber is known to lower cholesterol and tomatoes have 9% of the recommended daily dose.

  3. Fight cancer: Lycopene, which is an anti-oxidant, can help fight different types of cancers and slows the growth of cancerous cells. Numerous studies show that eating tomatoes daily can reduce your risk for stomach, prostate and colorectal cancer.

  4. Good for your eyes: Besides beta carotene and lycopene, which are both good for your vision, tomatoes also contain lutein. Combined, these 3 elements protect your eyes from light-induced damage, which is a leading cause of cataracts, and macular degeneration brought on by age.

  5. Improve bone density: Believe it or not, when it comes to building strong bones, tomatoes are just as effective as milk. Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin K, which has been proven to activate osteocalcin; osteocalcin anchors calcium deep within bone, making them stronger and less prone to becoming brittle with age.
So you may want to pour a glass of tomato juice instead of milk for breakfast- just not with your cereal (unless that’s your thing).

@ctrl-alt-nwo sir...
Actually I think Not only do you save money by growing tomatoes at home, but you also get the reward of plucking perfectly ripe fruits from the vine. Unlike their supermarket counterparts, vine-ripened tomatoes have sweet, juicy flesh that contributes unmistakable depth of flavor to any salad, pasta, or BLT. With a few tips for planting tomato seedlings, you'll be on your way to a tomato bonanza...
[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmYQ7VhA1ZLuuNnkQ7bwV5prcw9CGBzcw7ZUK5H91eME78/images%20(27).jpeg]
1. Find a sunny spot. Tomato plants thrive in six to eight hours of daily sunshine. Containers can be moved throughout the growing season and are a great choice for home growers who have limited garden space. Be sure to provide enough room for each plant's growth. One tiny seedling can reach an astonishing height of ten feet and will need at least two cubic feet of soil.
[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmbrYhuvCuWLF2RKVNScP6gLodZrsCazQwuvNzD3D9n8wK/soaker-hose-tomato.jpg]
2. Consider climate, size, and cooking use. Each cultivated variety (cultivar) offers a unique set of characteristics. Meaty tomatoes with few seeds, like San Marzano and Amish Paste, are ideal for sauce making. Short and stocky cultivars adapt well to containers, as do types that produce smaller fruits. All heirloom cultivars are open pollinated, meaning that year after year their seeds can be saved and will grow into identical plants. Like a precious piece of grandmother's jewelry, heirloom seeds are often passed down from one generation to the next. Hybrids, on the other hand, are combinations of two or more different tomato plants, bred together for traits such as disease resistance or uniform shape.

  1. Plant young seedlings deeply in nutrient-rich soil. Fill containers with equal parts planting mix and potting soil. Combined together, the two provide an aerated, medium density environment for roots to expand and access nutrients. Dig a hole deep enough to cover all but the top three to four inches of the seedling. It's okay to bury the lowest leaves. Those fuzzy white hairs on the stem will form a sturdy adventitious root system.
    [IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmepzazzq5CNcyxrC7wXkNNa2Esp1Qp8dTfN1WGY85AQir/images%20(26).jpeg]

  2. Water only as needed. A simple way to tell if your plant needs water is to stick your fingers into the soil. It should feel damp several inches below the surface, but "tomatoes like to have dry feet," says Allison Melanson, who works for Tomatomania, a community of enthusiastic tomato lovers that organizes tomato seedling sales in California, Maryland, and Virginia. "Imagine if you had to wear soggy socks for days at a time!" she explains. Her recommendation is to soak the roots once every three days, and then to water less often as the plant begins to form green tomatoes.

  3. Provide support as the plant grows. In the wild, tomato plants ramble along the ground but when cultivated vertically in home gardens, they require physical support from stakes, trellises, or cages. Generally, they also need nutritional support in the form of fertilizer. Melanson and other experienced home gardeners prefer organic fertilizer to synthetic fertilizer, which she describes as the botanical equivalent to a candy bar. "Synthetics offer a big burst but then lead to a sugar crash," she says. Apply organic fertilizer every two weeks to tomato plants growing in containers, and less often to plants growing directly in the ground. Crushed eggshells both fertilize the soil and deter soft-bellied pests from feasting on your tomatoes.
    [IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmcTXw4JKTkBUmDjfYMT4abWWRc1w4AK34vjPBphYU2m2y/images%20(28).jpeg]

  4. Enjoy the harvest. After transplanting a seedling into a larger growing space--a patio container, an expansive garden, or something in between--pinch off the first yellow flowers that it produces. By pruning away this early production, you will encourage the plant to grow taller and wider before it produces fruit, ultimately leading to a more bountiful harvest. Pick the fruits when they give slightly and eat them as soon as possible. Some heirloom tomatoes have such high levels of natural sugar that they will burst on your kitchen countertop if ignored for too long. In the case of irresistible homegrown tomatoes, that shouldn't be a problem!

Happy garderning....take fresh foods...enjoy your life...
Thanks...

@ctrl-alt-nwo, That's most important letter you sharing. Everywhere can grow tomato plants. I've found some information from website article. I decided to share like that.
Tomatoes are sub tropical plants and therefore require a position in full sun. This is especially important in most areas of the UK and Ireland where sunlight and warmth are at a premium even in mid summer. A position against a wall or fence will give a better chance of success as long as they can receive sufficient water; avoid hedges as the soil will be too dry. Tomato plants also grow very well in raised beds, they appreciate the soil conditions which provide moisture without water logging.

Medium sized tomatoes of the size you are likely to see in the shops. Smooth, round tomatoes usually red or yellow skinned. They are good all purpose tomatoes. Large mediterranean style tomatoes excellent for sandwiches and salads. Be aware large tomatoes need a long season to ripen so not suitable for growing outside in cooler climates. Beefsteak are well worth growing if you have a polytunnel or greenhouse for their interesting and unusual variations and good flavor.

[IMAGE: https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmTX3EQXGwgE3Bits6GrawuyeqE2d9Me4D1h63r8st2Lha]

omatoes are one of the most rewarding crops for the home gardener to grow simply because their flavour is so much better than their shop bought cousins. Tomatoes grown for the supermarket shelf have been bred to travel well and look good on the shelves for as long as possible; tickling your taste buds is not their number one priority.
Lycopene has been shown to help unclog blocked arteries and is thought to be one of the reasons the Mediterranean diet is so healthy.

Tomato Introduction*( Sri Lanka)

Tomato Contribute to a healthy well balanced diet. They are rich in minerals vitamins amino acid, Sugars and dietary fibers. Tomato contains much Vitamin B and C, iron and phosphorus although a ripe tomato contains as much as 93 to 94 percent water.

Nursery Management*

Suitable period is mid of March or end of August
1 m x 3 m size raised bed (about 18-20 cm raised) is recommended
Remove clods of earth and stubble
Add well decomposed farmyard manure and fine sand and prepare the bed
Apply fungicide (Thiram or captan) put paddy husk and straw layers on the Surface of the bed and fire from the opposite of the wind direction and burn the seed bed
Draw lines 12-15cm apart over the length of the seed bed. Sow the seed thinly spaced on the lines and press gently covering the seeds with fine sand.
Water the bed and mulch it by using paddy straw.

Soil****

Tomato grows well on most mineral soil that has proper water holding capacity and aeration and is free of soil. It prefers deep well drained sandy loam soils. The upper layer needs to be permeable. Soil depth of 15 to 20 cm is needed to grow a healthy crop.

Transplanting****

Transplant the seedling to the field 3-4 weeks after sowing. A week before transplanting seedlings should be hardened by reducing the application of water but 12-14 hours before they are taken out of the seedbed they should be thoroughly watered again to avoid excessive damage to the roots. Seedlings of 15-25 cm tall with 3-5 true leaves are most suitable for transplanting. Transplanting should be done in the afternoon or on a cloudy day reduce the transplanting shock.

Tomato is moderately tolerant to a wide range of pH, but grows well in soils with a pH of 5.5-6.8 addition of organic matter is in general favorable for good growth.

Watering**

Tomato is not resistant to drought. It is important to water the plant regularly especially during flowering and fruit formation the amount of water that is needed depend on the type of soil and on the weather.

All three varieties of homegrown tomatoes are perfect combination with salad. Our family’s favorite classic cucumber and tomato salad just got better with the addition of avocado, a light and flavorful lemon dressing and the freshness of cilantro. Easy, excellent avocado salad.

A tomato is a solar powered sugar factory. For the first month or so, all of the sugar it produces is directed towards new leaf growth. During this stage, tomato plants grow very rapidly, doubling their size every 12 to 15 days. Eventually, the plants make more sugar than the single growing tip can use, which signals the plant to make new branches and to flower. This usually happens after 10 to 13 leaves have expanded, at which time the plant is 12 to 18 inches tall. In the next few weeks, the entire character of the tomato plant changes. If unsupported, the increasing weight of filling fruit and multiple side branches forces the plant to lie on the ground. Once the main stem is horizontal, there is an increased tendency to branch. Left to its own devices, a vigorous indeterminate tomato plant can easily cover a 4- by 4-foot area with as many as 10 stems, each 3 to 5 feet long. By season's end, it will be an unsightly, impenetrable, disease-wracked tangle.

Once flowering commences, all tomato vines must be tied to their supports. Although vigorous, the plants are also easily damaged, so take care in how you tie them and what you use. Cloth strips work well as long as they're not too old and threadbare. Pieces of panty hose cause the least damage to plants, but they're not biodegradable. Twine should be at least 1/8 inch thick, or else it can cut into the tomato stems.

With tomatoes, we want to maximize the efficiency of photosynthesis and minimize the risk of disease. This is best accomplished by ensuring that each leaf has plenty of room and is supported up off the ground. When a tomato plant lies on the ground, or when its growth is extremely dense, many of its leaves are forced into permanent shade, greatly reducing the amount of sugar they produce. If a leaf uses more sugar than it makes, eventually it will yellow and drop off. A pruned and staked plant will produce larger fruit two to three weeks earlier than a prostrate one.

(unranked): Asterids

Order: Solanales

Family: Solanaceae

Genus: Solanum

Species: S. lycopersicum

Description::

The tomato is the edible, often red, vegetable of the plant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant. The plant belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in western South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato derived.[3][4] Its use as a cultivated food may have originated with the indigenous peoples of México.

Fruit size varies according to cultivar, with a width range of 0.5–4 inches (1.3–10.2 cm).[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmV1YbzotQJEiMRoeMk2Etw1DCVXbdPeyn8yZRRcawe653/rajcica-drvo-gigant-sjeme-slika-47296303.jpg][IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmaBfep4Gvd1KsCE4Twu5j2gBVxQoDAtDxSBdXgMUrypPV/tomato-plant.jpg][IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmX3FPbG9MD8zF1S85eDVuK7rVEzJLrEUQzLmn18tQht1f/1-2.jpg]

Love the idea of growing tomatoes, but not sure where to start? Grab a pot and some cherry tomato seedlings. They're amazingly easy to grow, and even one plant will bear a steady crop of bite-size fruits all season.
There are a few varieties you can choose from when planting cherry tomatoes. A popular variety of cherry tomatoes is Sweet Million, which bear long clusters of sweet yet tomatoey red fruit; SunSugar, which produces super sweet, richly flavored golden fruit; and an heirloom called Black Cherry, whose tomatoes have a complex, rich, sweet flavor.
All three are what are called "indeterminate" varieties, meaning they will continue to grow taller and produce more until the plants are killed by frost, which—if they really like where they are means the plants may grow to six, eight, or even 10 feet tall. If you don't want to deal with that much plant, you can ask if your local organic garden center has any dwarf or patio varieties of cherry tomatoes for sale.
Red or yellow pear tomatoes are fun because of their shape, though their skins tend to be a little thicker than your average cherry tomato. You can also often find grape tomato plants, which bear very sweet oblong fruits similar to those sold in supermarkets.

Hey @ctrl-alt-nwo great to see you are planting tomatos in your own home,
here i want to share sometips regarding tomatos planting :)

Every tomato lover dreams of growing the ultimate tomato. Firm, but juicy. Sweet, but tangy. Aromatic and blemish free. Perfection.

Unfortunately there are few vegetables that are prone to more problems than tomatoes. The trick to growing great tasting tomatoes is to choose the best varieties, start the plants off right, and control problems before they happen. Start here with some time tested tomato growing tips, to ensure your tomato bragging rights this year.

Don't Crowd Tomato Seedlings

If you are starting tomatoes from seed, be sure to give the seedlings plenty of room to branch out. Crowded conditions inhibit their growth and lead to disease later on, so transplant them into their own individual 4 inch pot, shortly after they get their first set of true leaves. Here are some detailed tips for growing tomatoes from seed

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmRrvjEGVqxXmC8kiNsPCoCPYhtVANJtB5LdX6A295WbrV/image.png]

Provide Lots of Light

Tomato seedlings need strong, direct light. Days are short during winter, so even placing them near a very sunny window may not provide them with sufficient natural light. Unless you are growing them in a greenhouse, your best option is to use some type of artificial plant lighting, for 14-18 hours every day.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmc3A8nXUgvt2kzV3yYa9o4rA4gYBz7YPybPJLRHa9usqt/image.png]

Put a Fan on Your Tomato Seedlings.

It seems tomato plants need to move and sway in the breeze, to develop strong stems. That happens naturally outdoors, but if you are growing your seedlings inside, you will need to provide the air circulation. Create a breeze by turning a fan on them for 5-10 minutes, twice a day.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmRw6PGA3A1nQBhedZb59EZY9jpgpEjog2dyLgYNRn7HLJ/image.png]

Preheat the Soil in Your Garden

Tomatoes love heat. Cover the planting area with black or red plastic a couple of weeks before you intend to plant. Those extra degrees of soil warmth will translate into earlier tomatoes.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmXMrE1W4YMPLeBz7hNu1399L5mrKKjrTWxQm3YXC4Uii3/image.png]

Bury Them

Plant your tomato plants deeper than they come in the pot, all the way up to the top few leaves. When planted this way, tomatoes are able to develop roots all along their stems. And more roots will make for a stronger plant.

Mulch is a covering placed over the soil around your tomatoes. It's key step to take in effective tomato care.
It keeps moisture in. A layer spread over bare soil allows the area to soak up more water. The outer layer dries faster than the soil below it. That reduces the rate of evaporation from the soil, plus it lets the soil to retain moisture for your tomato plants.
It regulates soil temperature. In hot summer months, a layer helps keep the underlying soil cooler. In the fall when temperatures fall off, the layer around your tomato plants keep roots warm.
It smothers weeds. Fewer weeds sprout because seeds are buried beneath the surface. And the weeds that sprout are weak and easy to pull.
It prevents disease and fruit rot. A layer keeps water from splashing on the soil, absorbing bacteria and fungi, and bouncing up onto your plants. Likewise, when a tomato falls onto a layered area, it is less likely to rot quickly than if it falls onto soil.
It improves the soil. Organic varieties can be turned into the soil at the end of the season.

Preparing To Plant
Choose an open position for your tomatoes that receives at least six hours of full sun each day.

Tomatoes grow happily in most soils but, like all plants, a little time spent on their soil will go a long way to healthy plants and an abundance of fruit. If you have clay soil (like many areas of Sydney), it’s best to raise the planting area to help with drainage. Add compost to help with soil structure, Dolomite to prevent blossom end rot (calcium deficiency) and a Tomato and Vegetable Food around one week before you plant your tomatoes and water in well.

If you grew tomatoes last year, it’s best to choose a new spot for your plants this year to eliminate any risk of soil borne disease. Plants can be returned to the same location the following year – though the longer the better.

If you’re planning to plant in a pot, choose a good quality Tomato and Vegie growing mix to plant them into.

Choosing Your Variety
There are a huge number of varieties available, with differences in growing habit and the size, shape, taste, colour and acidity of fruit. Here some of our favourites that we grow at Flower Power:

Small Fruit Varieties
Cherry Cocktail: This early maturing variety produces large clusters of sweet, bite-sized cocktail fruit.

Grape: A very heavy yielding variety producing long clusters of sweet fruit.

Lady Bug: A sweet cherry tomato producing lots of 10-cent piece sized fruit.

Orange Pixie: A sweet tasting dwarf variety producing masses of large cherry tomatoes. Perfect for pots.

Sugar Snack: A small, cherry sized fruit with a sweet full flavour.

Sweet Bite: Smaller than traditional cherry varieties, this early maturing variety produces hundreds of juicy, bite-size fruit.

Tiny Tim: Produces sweet cherry sized fruit on a dwarf bush – perfect for pots.

Tommy Toe: Super sweet, bit- sized balls of fruit that produces hundreds of 50-cent piece sized tomatoes.

Medium to Large Fruit Varieties
Apollo: Produces high yields of full flavoured, round, red fruit early in the season.

Big Bite: An extra-large, full flavoured beefsteak type tomato.

Black Krim: An heirloom Russian variety from the 19th century with a full flavoured, slightly flattened fruit.

Grosse Lisse: Medium to large deep red fruit mid to late in the season.

Health Kick: A delicious plum variety containing 55% more antioxidants.

Oxheart: Originating in Hungary, this old-fashioned favourite has fine, feathery foliage and heart-shaped pink fruit with meaty flesh. An heirloom variety perfect for sandwiches.

Patio Supreme: Early to mature with full flavoured bright red, flat fruit on a compact, dwarf bush – perfect for pots.

Roma: Rich red medium to large egg-shaped, full flavoured fruit mid to late in the season.

Totem: A delicious truss bush variety with medium sized red fruit, perfect for pots.

Truss: Truss tomatoes are sweet, juicy and easy to roast . They can be grown in-ground or in a large pot and need a stake to climb.

Planting & Growing
When you’re ready to plant, place your seedlings about 70cm apart. This may seem like a lot while they are this size, but any less and they’ll be crowded when they grow. Your plants will need support as they go, so put in a hardwood stake around 5cm from the plant, or try a tomato cage. Mulch the plants well, preferably with an organic mulch like Sugar Cane that will add nutrients back to the soil as it breaks down. Mulch should be applied 5cm thick with a 5cm gap around stems to prevent collar rot.

As the plant grows, choose two main stems and tie them to the stake at 30cm intervals as they grow. Once these two stems are established all other side shoots (laterals) should be pinched out to keep the plant tidy and manageable, as well as helping the plant concentrate on fruit production. Stems should be pinched off once a week as they can get wild very quickly!

Feeding
To get the most out of your tomato plants, it’s best to keep them well fed. Use the Tomato and Vegie fertiliser that you added to the soil prior to planting to feed them once a month as per the pack instructions, commencing when your plants first start flowering.

If your plants seem to be fattening up with leaves instead of fruit, try adding potash to encourage flowers and fruit.

Watering
Tomatoes require lots of water and regularly. Drying out will drastically reduce their yield, and irregular watering leads to blossom rot – a sunken black patch on the bottom of your fruit. Water your plants weekly, and once fruit has developed try to water daily during very hot weather. Try to avoid overhead watering as this can encourage leaf blight and other fungal diseases.

Pest Control
Tomatoes are as popular with pests as they are with people, but it’s easy to protect your crop. Here are some pests and diseases to look out for.

Caterpillars: Will eat holes in your leaves and green fruit. Pick off if it’s only a small problem or spray with Dipel or Success Ultra to protect your plants.

Fruit Fly: Will lay eggs in your ripening fruit – ugh! Try Eco-Naturalure or hang fruit fly bait traps near your plants.

Aphids: These rascals suck sap from foliage and spread plant disease. Check your plants for ants – ants are themselves harmless, but come to feed on the sticky residue left by aphids and white fly so are a sign of an aphid problem. Spray with Conquer, or try to encourage the aphids natural enemy to take up residence – the lady beetle.

Tomato wilt: If this disease has set in all the leaves will wilt and the plant will appear very dry. What’s happening is the stem inside is dying and unfortunately the plant can’t be saved. This will happen if you don’t keep aphids under control so prevention is the best cure!

Early blight: If you notice tomato leaf spots and yellowing lower leaves you may have tomato early blight. This disease causes damage to the leaves, stems and even the fruit of the plant. Treat with Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide.

Blossom end rot – bottom of the tomato fruit will discolour and rot. This is a sign of calcium deficiency. You can try to add Dolomite at this stage but it’s likely to late.

Companion Planting: For a completely organic approach, try planting basil and/or marigolds with your tomatoes – they can help to deter aphids, white fly and nematodes (a disease affecting roots).

Harvesting
You’ve successfully grown your first tomato, and now it’s time to enjoy it!
Pick your tomato when it is red-ripe. As pretty as they look, leaving your fruit on the vine too long will cause it to lose its sweetness and become floury.

A tomato is a nutrient-dense superfood that offers benefit to a range of bodily systems. Its nutritional content supports healthful skin, weight loss, and heart health.
Despite the popularity of tomatoes, it was only 200 years ago that they were thought to be poisonous in the United States (U.S.) This is likely to be because the plant belongs to the toxic nightshade family.

Tomatoes are now the fourth most popular fresh-market vegetable behind potatoes, lettuce, and onions. This article will examine their powerful health benefits, nutritional content, ways to include more tomatoes in the diet, and the risks of tomato consumption.

Fast facts on tomatoes

Including tomatoes in the diet can help protect against cancer, maintain healthy blood pressure, and reduce blood glucose in people with diabetes.
Tomatoes contain key carotenoids such as lutein and lycopene. These can protect the eye against light-induced damage.
Eat more tomatoes by adding them to wraps or sandwiches, sauces, or salsas. Alternatively, eat them cooked or stewed, as these preparation methods can boost the availability of key nutrients.
Tomatoes are in the top ten fruits and vegetables for containing levels of pesticide residue. Wash tomatoes before eating.

How to grow Tomatos

Tomatoes come in two main varieties, heirlooms and hybrids. Heirloom varieties have been cultivated for generations, and are prized for their characteristic shapes, sizes and flavors. Hybrids are genetically bred to be disease resistant and increase yields. While more reliable, the plants are said to produce less flavorful fruits. Popular heirloom varieties include Brandywine and Mortgage Lifter. Popular hybrid varieties include Early Girl and Better Boy.

Steps

Prepare the Soil
Tomatoes require lots of sun and heat to thrive. Select a site in the garden that receives at least six hours of direct sun per day. Tomatoes are heavy feeders. Work a good amount of organic material and compost into the beds before planting. For an added nutrient boost, add some 10-10-10 fertilizer.

Build the Tomato Cages

Using wire snips, cut 60"-tall wire-mesh fencing to a length of 60" for each plant. To turn the wire mesh into a tomato cage, join the ends to form a cylindrical tower. Fasten the cages by connecting the ends to one another with wire. Place mesh cages where you intend to place each tomato plant. Secure by attaching to 6' wooden stakes driven deep into the soil (Image 1).

https://diy.sndimg.com/content/dam/images/diy/fullset/2005/7/28/0/dffg205_2fj.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.1280.960.suffix/1420596571973.jpeg

Plant the Tomatoes
Well after the final spring frost date, it is okay to plant the tomato transplants. Snip off the bottom leaves from the plants and set in holes about six inches deeper than where they sat in their pots. Tomatoes have a unique ability to grow new roots from their stems. Water well immediately.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmYgep5nAdCJZRT9cDsmGZzGLdCvjh1AYBaGHa5PHPz1om/image.png]

Water, Mulch and Feed
Tomatoes require frequent and deep waterings. It is important to maintain a consistent moisture level in order to prevent blossom-end rot, a disease that ruins the fruit. When the soil has had a chance to warm up, lay down a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture. When fruit begins to set, work additional fertilizer into the soil around the base of the plants.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmcoqEfMGXzptEggvQHfYT7xkNd8V4nKsNTUKRUiibLLq7/image.png]

Harvest the Tomatoes
When ripe, a tomato will pull easily from the vine. Grab firmly but gently and twist to remove the fruit. Be careful not to break the main stems when harvesting. If a frost is in the forecast, remove all fruit, ripe or not, and store inside to ripen.

Tomato, is today the most popular garden vegetable in America. For many years, however, tomatoes (then called "love apples") were considered poisonous and were grown solely for their ornamental value. Tomatoes are usually easy to grow and a few plants provide an adequate harvest for most families. The quality of fruit picked in the garden when fully ripe far surpasses anything available on the market, even in season. The tomato plant is a tender, warm-season perennial that is grown as an annual in summer gardens all over the continental United States. Spring and fall freezes limit the outdoor growing season.

Recommended Varieties
Hundreds of varieties of tomatoes are now available for the home gardener. They range widely in size, shape, color, plant type, disease resistance and season of maturity. Catalogs, garden centers and greenhouses offer a large selection of tomato varieties and choosing the best one or two varieties can be extremely difficult. Evaluate your needs, then choose the varieties best suited to your intended use and method of culture.

Tomato plants fall into one of two types that affect ultimate plant height and cultural requirements. Tomatoes are determinate if they eventually form a flower cluster at the terminal growing point, causing the plant to stop growing in height. Plants that never set terminal flower clusters, but only lateral ones and continue indefinitely to grow taller are called indeterminate. Older varieties are almost all indeterminate. These can be counted upon to produce abundant foliage and to ripen flavorful fruit. They may, however be extremely late in maturing. The first determinate varieties developed had real problems with inadequate foliage cover and taste, but they ripened very early. Newer determinates produce better foliage, may grow taller and ripen fruit of similar quality to modern indeterminate varieties. They still tend to ripen their fruit over a shorter period of time, so successive plantings may be desirable with determinates to keep the harvest coming through the entire season. Determinate vines are easier to control and support during the growing season. Some of the extreme dwarf types are determinate as well as dwarf, producing some truly tiny mature plants.

Days to harvest are generally determined from the time transplants are planted in the garden.

Very delicious and a must at the dining table in many forms Tomato is a well known fruit used as vegetable.

History

In the last few centuries this South American plant managed to spread all across the world, becoming one of the best known food ingredients and one of the most beloved vegetables (even though technically its classified as a fruit).

Modern age of commercially grown tomato started with the efforts of Alexander W. Livingston, American botanist and scientist who dedicated much of his life on upgrading tomato with selective breeding into the most commonly known form we know today. His 1870s breed called Paragon became instant success in the North America, kick-starring the large tomato industry and approval from public. source

Nutritious value

Selective breeding has managed to refine tomato into very nutritious state, filled with vitamin A, C, E, antioxidants, and more.

Cherry Tomatoes

There are many varieties that can be grown at home in lawn or under shade or in balconies. But one variety I like is Cherry or Grape tomato.
Cherry and grape tomatoes are small, usually less than 1” (2.5cm), and grow in large clusters.
Cherry tomatoes are generally the best choices for cool, alpine, or short-summer gardens, and small fruit size means they’re more suitable if you’re growing tomatoes in containers. They tend to have better disease resistance than larger tomato varieties, and they're more forgiving of drought stress and poor soil. source

High Tech Tomatoes

High Tech Agriculture growth in recent times have also impacted on the production of tomatoes. By adopting progressive measures tomatoes are produced in a large scale. Through this technique, farmers can get between 450 and 550 tons of vegetables per acre, compared to the average yield of 15 tons per acre from traditional farming. source

Hydroponic farms are unique in that they do not require any fertile soil. Indeed many of the world’s largest hydroponic farms are set up in the deserts of the Middle East or unfertile soils in other parts of the world. Seeds are placed in a growing medium – which can be either solid or liquid – in trays made from steel pipes.

My organic home-grown tomatoes
It's the very end of tomato season, and I am savoring the very last tastes of my favorite crop. A couple of weeks ago, nighttime temperatures in my area turned low enough that I knew it was the end of tomato season. Tomatoes ripen between temperatures of 60-85 degrees. " They will not ripen when the nighttime temperature is below 50 and the daytime temperature below 60 for 14 days or more." Source.

Instead of watching the last tomatoes on the vine slowly rot away, I was determined to pick them all and have them ripen inside. I spent a day picking all of the green tomatoes, pulling out the rest of the tomato plants, and tossing them in the compost.
Tomatoes do not need sunlight to ripen. They do need heat. Place your green tomatoes inside a paper bag or cardboard box in a place that is warm. I have mine sitting in a cardboard box in my living room. Another factor that helps the ripening process is a gas called ethylene. Ethylene is naturally released by ripening fruits and veggies like tomatoes, bananas, and apples. I placed some red tomatoes inside of the cardboard box along with all of the green ones in order to provide needed ethylene. If you don't have any red tomatoes, a ripening banana or apple will work as well. In order to capture and contain the ethylene, I placed newspaper over all of the tomatoes.

Enjoy your bounty! I have been making an amazing tomato sauce/soup with my tomatoes. I roast some garlic cloves, add them to a large pot with olive oil, add my unskinned tomatoes, mash the tomatoes with a potato masher, and then let them simmer for 2 hours. Sometimes I add truffle oil and basil. If you want a more creamy soup, you can puree it all at the end. If some of your tomatoes never ripen, you can make some delicious fried green tomatoes!

Here are some great tips and plans for growing tomatoes including how to plant tomatoes and fertilizing tomatoes, and tips for watering tomato plants.

Planting tomatoes in most any type of home vegetable garden including raised bed, container, potted, vertical, and indoor vegetable gardens is fun and easy!
You will be rewarded with an amazing abundance of delicious fresh tomatoes.

Ripe Cherry Tomatoes

When planning a vegetable garden, large or small, planting a tomato plant or two is a must.

There are so many great varieties from which to choose; from small cherry tomatoes, to medium sizes for salads and sauces, and large slicing varieties.

Nothing tastes better than a vine-ripened home-grown tomato.

If you haven't yet eaten one, you are missing out on one of the greater pleasures in life!
Store-bought tomatoes pale in comparison.
So, if you don't believe me, try growing tomatoes in your garden and see for yourself!

Choosing a Tomato Variety

Growing Tomatoes in Balcony Container Garden
When choosing tomato cultivars, it all depends on your preferences.
If you’re for flavor, then home cultivars are best.
If you want uniformity in size and shape as well as pest and disease resistance, then commercial cultivars are for you.

How to Grow Tomatoes

With over 7,500 tomato varieties, you might not know where to begin in choosing tomato plants for your garden.
Luckily, most garden centers only offer 5 to 10 of the most popular varieties that will grow well in your area and climate.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmbgiFwj6ccf6oC4fNRTPKrVsGvHYWoGv91chHYwhcvucX/interesting-design-ideas-tomato-garden-pin-by-my-tien-vini-on-studying-sources-and-entertainment.jpg]

You might want to start with one cherry tomato, and one larger variety such as "Early Girl", or "Beefsteak" which are both good for slicing, sauces, and salads.
If you plant more than one plant, be prepared to give away tomatoes to friends and neighbors, or perhaps you will want to try your hand at canning your own homemade salsa, sauce, or tomato juice.

How to Plant Tomatoes

It is time to plant tomatoes in the ground when the weather starts to warm, after all danger of frost has passed.
This is because growing tomatoes prefer 8 hours of sunlight a day at temperatures between 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

The ideal conditions necessary for successfully growing tomatoes are soil pH levels of 5.5 to 6.8, presence of abundant organic fertilizer or compost in the soil, and deep planting.

If possible, till generous compost matter into the soil.

Depending on your choice of varieties to be planted, you will have to allocate space between plants from 12 inches apart (dwarf varieties) to 36 inches apart (trellised types).

Many gardeners recommending planting your tomato plants by laying them at a 45 degree angle, and covering not only the roots, but one half of the plant with soil.
Surprisingly, the tomato plant starts growing straight upwards in just a few days time.

Growing Tomatoes in Pots and Containers

Tomatoes make excellent container plants.
If you are limited for garden space, growing tomatoes in pots placed in a sunny location will provide an abundance of fruit.
Tomatoes are always a good choice when planning a container garden in a sunny location.
Use a good quality potting soil with added compost or fertilizer to fill your containers.
Immediately after you transplant your tomato plant, place a "tomato cage" over the small plant.

As your plant grows, it will have the necessary support in place to keep it upright, and to keep the branches from breaking.

Hint: Don't wait to add the cage later, as it is hard to get a large plant inside the cage without damaging or breaking some of the branches. (Yes, I learned this the hard way!)

Watering Tomato Plants and Tomato Fertilizer

As to water and fertilizer, just make sure that these are provided to your growing tomato plants in moderate quantities.

Organic tomato fertilizer can be either liquid fish fertilizer, or organic compost and well-aged manure worked well into the soil.
Liquid fish fertilizer works well when applied at 3 week intervals.
It also helps if you have planted your tomato plants in compost-enriched soil.

Once the plant is well established and small tomatoes are beginning to grow, it is not necessary or desirable to water as often. Infrequent deep watering is best at this

Helpful Hints for Planting Tomato
Plants

When planting tomato plants, always plant them on their sides and then cover the whole root and part of the stem with soil.
Don’t worry since the plant will grow upright in just a few days.
You may also want to trim your tomato plants to maximize their growth.
Be sure to trim only the non-fruit bearing branches. These branches do not have any flower blossoms or small tomatoes growing on them.
As you can see, growing tomatoes is quite easy. And nothing in the world beats the taste of fresh home grown tomatoes from your vegetable garden!
You will be amazed at how delicious and flavorful vine ripened tomatoes taste.
You will save money and enjoy much superior flavor with your home-grown tomatoes.

Fertilizer application / management of tomato cultivation
To get good quality yield, use organic fertilizers as much as possible in tomato cultivation land. The complete dung, TSP, MP, half or urea should be sprinkled in the field during the last cultivation. Apply the remaining half urea fertilizer in two installments after 15 and 30 days of planting. During the last cultivation, 20 kg of dung fertilizers, 300 to 400 grams of MOP fertilizer and 500 grams of 1 kg TSP fertilizer should be sprinkled in the soil for the promised land. In the tomato field, the urea fertilizer will be applied in three installments.
After 25 days of transplanting the fertilizer should be applied in the second installment. If there is a shortage of fertilizer, then use gypsum, zinc sulphate, boric acid powder and magnesium sulphate fertilizers.
