Life's Eternally Moving Goalposts

Sometimes I get caught in the loop of (perhaps?) thinking too much.

That is to say, I am not content with the fact that things are a certain way, I want to explore — in depth — why they are that way.

I definitely believe that it is a worthy thing in life to have goals... but only so long as those goals are your own, rather than goals somehow prescribed by society.

There seem to be a million articles and seminars and books out there about how we can "Become Successful," but what does that really mean? Beyond that, there are a million pieces of advice about whether or not we are making it.

Of course, the problem with those is that they put our individual lives into neat little generic boxes that somehow are supposed to apply to everyone... even though that is an impossible proposition.

> "But wait, there's more...!"

The thing that bothers me — and why I have largely gotten off the circus wagon of life — is that I felt like the collective "basket" of the worthy goals we're all supposed to pursue gets bigger and bigger at a rate that makes completing the task eternally just out of reach.

Makes me wonder why anyone thinks it's a worthy idea to keep working towards a goal you — ultimately — have no real hope of getting to.

Maybe I'm misreading the room, but it seems like goals were more reliable and concrete in a not too distant past. The things we strived for in life didn't become "inadequate" in the time between starting out and finishing. It's like running a 5K race, getting to the finish line and being told that the event has been extended to 10K... while you were running.

Maybe I'm too cynical, but I blame a system that is eternally reliant on ever increasing profits for its own survival. Even when someone clearly has enough, there's no incentive to slow down because you accept that you do actually have enough.

Feels a bit like a sickness.
