El araguaney (Tabebuia chrisantha) es un árbol autóctono y su altura oscila entre 6 y 12 metros, es de lento crecimiento, pero de larga duración. Su tronco es recto, cilíndrico y de unos 60 centímetros de diámetro. Es una planta fuerte y tiene el don de crecer casi en cualquier suelo, incluso en aquellos que son pobres en sustancias orgánicas. En cuanto al término “araguaney” parece tener sus orígenes en la voz Caribe “aravenei” con la cual ese pueblo indígena daba nombre a este árbol.

Este pintoresco árbol es verde durante casi todo el año pero por unos pocos días, el araguaney se cubre de amarillo, pasa inadvertido hasta que nacen sus flores amarillas, entre los meses de febrero y abril, cuando está totalmente desprovisto de hojas. Por lo cual florece a los pocos días después de haber llovido en medio de la temporada seca, es común observar que todos los araguaneyes de un sector florecen al mismo tiempo.

Las flores de nuestro Araguaney duran pocos días y resulta atractivo para las abejas que las polinizan, y para los pájaros que buscan el néctar. En la comunidad donde laboro este pintoresco árbol para éstas fechas empieza a florecer, por lo cual es muy agradable para la vista y en lo personal, sería un maravilloso proyecto si se sembraran cientos de éstos árboles en muchas de nuestras carreteras, calles, plazas y en todo espacio público, porque realmente resulta muy grato ver nuestro árbol Nacional.
