The conversations about Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been both interesting and intriguing. One of the most intriguing ones today is the future of work. In a world highly influenced and seemingly controlled by technology, AI stands at the forefront of modern-day technological advancements. And as I said, one of the big conversations is the future of work, with the big question, ‘Will AI take our jobs?’
That is beyond a conversation though, it's a concern today because it seems like AI is providing available options, and not just that but faster and cheaper ones as well, also void of some human deficiencies. It leaves the concern about the future of work for many. So, we're then left to consider if our work will survive as time passes by. Will it still be our work, will we be relevant in it, or will there be a better alternative and a tilt towards AI?
AI is touching almost every skill and profession. It might just not be loud it in some fields and skills but it's in many. It's employed directly or indirectly in several spaces and work, online and offline. While it's heavy in some work, it's lightly employed in others. As one who does a couple of online or digital skills/work, I feel this concern. Obviously, digital skills and related work have much of the concern since AI itself is a digital tool, predominantly employed there.
However, one thing I understand about AI is that it's a development, and we ought to follow this development that has come to stay. It might be a threat to some of our work, but it's a tool as well. More so of that. So, as a writer, graphic designer and video editor who's touching some social media management, AI poses a threat to my work if I'm being honest. And where it'll be in ten years depends on my resolve and interaction with AI.
There's an emotional part to this work or skills, which is where I see that AI fails. It's clear that people are already using AI to write and also create designs, which I do at times, it remains a tool as well. The concern is, how advanced it will be in ten years and will AI have taken hold of these skills or work? If I choose to learn to move with AI and not see it as a total threat, but a tool to help me, I consider my work/skill will still be relevant and existing.
