Charlie salió al escenario sosteniendo su nuevo banjo negro, además llevaba su uniforme que le daba un gran toque, por un momento sintió que ya había ganado todo, puesto que llego allí gracias a su esfuerzo. Sin embargo, la competencia apenas comenzaba y el escenario estaba lleno de niños y niñas provenientes de distintas escuelas, donde algunos cargaban guitarras, otros violines e incluso banjos. Charlie se sorprendió, pero estaba seguro de su talento y lo mejor es que su abuelo estaba en la primera fila, apoyándolo.

Todo cambio, cuando una persona comentó —¡Bienvenidos al Concurso Regional de Jóvenes Músicos— todas las personas que estaban allí comenzaron a aplaudir y segundos después salieron los jurados, que eran músicos reconocidos de risignstar y que habían recorrido escenarios de todo el país. La presidenta del jurado tomó el micrófono y dijo —Esta competencia contará de cuatro rondas y entre cada ronda habrá eliminación y solo quienes obtengan los mejores puntajes podrán avanzar— todos los participantes se miraron y Charlie sonrió y recordó las palabras de su abuelo.

>Charlie walked onto the stage holding his new black banjo; he was also wearing his uniform, which really made him stand out. For a moment, he felt like he’d already won it all, since he’d made it there through his own hard work. However, the competition was just getting started, and the stage was filled with boys and girls from different schools—some carrying guitars, others violins, and even banjos. Charlie was surprised, but he was confident in his talent, and best of all, his grandfather was in the front row, cheering him on.

>Everything changed when someone announced, “Welcome to the Regional Young Musicians Competition.” Everyone in the audience began to clap, and seconds later the judges came out—renowned musicians from Risignstar who had performed on stages across the country. The chair of the jury took the microphone and said, “This competition will consist of four rounds, and there will be eliminations between each round; only those who earn the highest scores will advance.” All the participants looked at each other, and Charlie smiled, remembering his grandfather’s words.

La primera ronda comenzó, donde poco a poco fueron subiendo los participantes al escenario y cada uno realizó algo. Hasta que por fin llamaron a —¡Charlie Thompson!— este pequeño subió, tomó su banjo y cerró los ojos, para comenzar a tocar. Las primeras notas fueron suaves y sus dedos se movían con precisión mientras recordaba cada tarde de práctica junto a su abuelo. Cuando terminó recibió muchos aplausos y era momento de que el jurado tomara decisión y dieron los resultados.

El primer lugar: 96 puntos, el segundo lugar: 95 puntos y el tercer lugar: Charlie Thompson — 94 puntos. Charlie no podía creerlo, ya que quedó entre los primeros. Luego de varias horas llegó la primera eliminación y cada vez que se iba un concursante el sitio quedaba en silencio. Charlie estaba atento y nombre no aprecio, siendo algo muy emocionante.

La segunda ronda era más difícil, ya que ahora los concursantes debían interpretar una pieza desconocida entregada por los jurados, muchos se colocaron nerviosos y Charlie también. Miro a su abuelo mientras subía al escenario, se sentó y las primeras notas fueron correctas, pero llegó una parte donde sus dedos se resbalaron y se equivocó, nadie dijo nada, solamente siguió tocando logrando transformar el error en parte de la interpretación.

>The first round began, and one by one the contestants took the stage to perform. Finally, they called out, “Charlie Thompson!” The little boy stepped up, picked up his banjo, closed his eyes, and began to play. The first notes were soft, and his fingers moved with precision as he recalled every afternoon of practice with his grandfather. When he finished, he received a round of applause, and it was time for the judges to make their decision and announce the results.

>First place: 96 points, second place: 95 points, and third place: Charlie Thompson—94 points. Charlie couldn’t believe it; he had placed among the top three. After several hours, the first elimination came, and every time a contestant left, the room fell silent. Charlie was paying close attention and didn’t miss a thing—it was incredibly exciting.

>The second round was more difficult, since now the contestants had to perform an unfamiliar piece provided by the judges; many got nervous, and so did Charlie. He looked at his grandfather as he walked onto the stage, sat down, and played the first few notes correctly, but then came a part where his fingers slipped and he made a mistake. No one said anything; he just kept playing, managing to turn the error into part of the performance.

Nuevamente, aparecieron las puntuaciones, Charlie obtuvo 97 puntos, logrando subir al segundo puesto de la tabla, sin embargo, tenía que seguir compitiendo, ya que solo los primeros 10 avanzan a la semifinal. Este pequeño estaba haciendo un gran trabajo, pero no se podía confiar y entonces escuchó algo que hizo que su corazón se acelerara —El primer semifinalista en presentarse será Charlie Thompson— todos aplaudieron, mientras Charlie avanzaba hacia el escenario comprendió que la prueba más difícil de toda la competencia estaba a punto de comenzar.

>Once again, the scores were announced: Charlie scored 97 points, moving him up to second place in the standings. However, he still had to keep competing, since only the top 10 advance to the semifinals. This little guy was doing a great job, but he couldn’t get complacent, and then he heard something that made his heart race—“The first semifinalist to perform will be Charlie Thompson”—everyone applauded, and as Charlie walked toward the stage, he realized that the toughest test of the entire competition was about to begin.
