This year of 2026 is the 30th year of the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG). A 30th celebration set has been revealed. This one will be crazy.

Set Information

The 30th celebration set releases worldwide on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. This set contains around 150 cards after secret rares. Additional product releases are throughout the year.

This set includes 30 classic Pokemon cards from the game's history. Each card gets a 30 Pikachu stamp and are not legal for tournament play.

Every 30th celebrations pack comes with a Pikachu card. There are 30 Pikachu cards to collect in this set. Why Pikachu? Pikachu is the mascot Pokemon for the franchise.

Futuristic Rare Cards

A new card rarity appears in this set in the form of Futuristic rare. We have Mewtwo ex and Mew ex.

Mewtwo ex as an attacker does not seem that great. A damage spread of 50 damage to each Pokemon ex is not amazing but not awful though.

Mew ex is not very high in HP but its ability can copy Pokemon attacks on your Bench. This is provided that you have the right energy types and amounts for the attacks. A zero retreat cost on Mew ex is useful as you have it in the front before drawing a card and then commit an attacker.

Possible Partners For Mew ex

As this Mew ex can copy Benched Pokemon's attacks, theorycrafting for Mew ex is beneficial.

Do keep in mind that as Mew ex is a Psychic Pokemon, the copied attacks will be Psychic attacks. Psychic attacks are good against some Fighting Pokemon that are weak to Psychic. Combine Psychic attacks with Lillie's Clefairy ex to gain weakness advantage over Dragon types like Dragapult ex.

Mew ex can copy a Beedrill ex attack. Instead of risking a Beedrill for the attack, let Mew ex use a Beedrill ex attack.

A less serious option is using Budew.

There's also Ethan's Typhlosion to copy from as well as the upcoming Dhelmise (with 4 Ghost Veil in discard) from Pitch Black. (Proxy card version of Dhelmise.)

Other possible Pokemon ex attackers include:

Mew ex Copying Mega Pokemon ex Attacks

The big downside with Mega Pokemon ex is that they give up 3 Prize Cards to the opponent when it is Knocked Out. A regular Pokemon ex gives up 2 Prize Cards and a non Rule Box Pokemon gives up 1 Prize Card out of 6.

Having Mew ex copy a Mega Pokemon ex attack is a little bit safer as the Mega Pokemon is mostly safe on the Bench. Possibly good Mega Pokemon ex candidates include:

Sylveon ex may be a good attacker in Eevee themed decks. You do run different energy types anyways.

Notes

This 30th anniversary set is mostly for the collectors and unfortunately scalpers too. I do mostly playing with some collecting so I can kind of skip this set.

Mew ex is a highly playable card. My issue is not the card but finding one could be tricky. And even if you find one, the price could be at least 15 CAD.

Like with any special set, this thing will get hyped. People who normally don't follow the Pokemon TCG sets will return to this space and get their wallets ready. Prices for this set's products will be out of control, I fear. I foresee chaos from addicts and greedy people similar to Black Friday fights in a random Walmart store in the USA.

What are your thoughts on this set and some of these cards?
