Since I started making drawings for the Splinterlands and its art contest I don’t think I have had the privilege of draw the legendary Obsidian and even if I have, it would have been very early last year just around the time I started making entries. There was a lot of self inflicted pressure from my end as this was the first time I was drawing this card which I admire. I didn’t want to fall short of perfection and as such I took my time in nailing out the details as you can see. There were spots and areas where I did improvise but all the same, I stayed true to the premise.

The card

The piece started out with a supposed tracing with my blue ink. This was done as light as possible, as much as my pen could allow. I did this so that I will not miss or disrupt any further progress

The next thing I did was my usual shading with the Black ink to make firm the already established form. Well, while I was doing this I got carried away with the process so much so that I started shading the inner wear and part of the stone in the card.

I moved on to shading her staff the little way I could to make it have a semblance with that which I had in mind. I also colored her top black so as to get a dimmer color when I apply the original later. I also shaded her staff or as I like to say “Her Trident”🔱

I continued the rigorous process of coloring the parts I had earlier shaded and even the eyeballs. It may not be too visible but the eyeballs have two distinct colors.

Next up I shaded her cape and her pendant. I did this using light Purple and Red pens. The movement was subtle and this gave room for the colors to blend into themselves. You can almost not tell.

Then the hair was left. It took some doing and patience to cover up this space individually but in time I did.

The final touch wasn’t out of this world, it was just a recount of the whole piece and some touch up on the face and parts of the arm that had visible flesh. I was tempted to used orange for her skin tone though….but eventually used black
