Everything happens for a reason. It's funny how sometimes we never see the reasons until we are away from them.

Looking back to my school life, from high school down to college, I must confess, a lot was learned and unlearned.

I was privileged to attend three different high schools, and from each, I learned different things.

My first school was a missionary school. While I was there, I was taught the fear of God, morality, and academic knowledge.

Life there was simple, although people would always be people; there were stubborn students, yet everything was transparent, honest, and just.

It became natural for me to be transparent and honest, especially in examinations. Cheating was one of the things that was highly frowned upon in the missionary school I attended, so cheating was something I could say no to effortlessly.

When I went to the second school, things were different; although discipline was key, the students did whatever they wanted during examinations without being caught.

The way of life there was completely different from where I came from, and I had to build myself up to adapt. One thing I love about the school is its social lifestyle.

The students are well organized and associated with each other very well. There were several social activities to boost one's confidence and social engagement, and I picked them up.

My third school was a war zone; it was a place of survival. Students were rugged, most of them prefer to be in the bush rather than to be in class.

Teachers were strict with flogging. I can remember the first day I resumed, I was forced to harvest soya beans, something I had never done before.

That same day, I received a welcoming beating from one of the staff; it was not funny.

In that school, I learned how to escape from beatings, labor, and unnecessary tasks. I also became rugged and understood a little about street life there.

All those experiences merged together made me who I am.

Different environments have different ways of life. As one dwells there for some time, its way of life automatically finds expression in their lives.

Just like my experiences, each of the schools I visited had a way of life, and it affected me one way or another.

So, yes, if I had gone to a different school from the ones I have attended, I wouldn't have been the way I am.

I would have had different experiences and different lessons. The only thing that would have remained the same would have probably been academic knowledge.

If I could go back in time, I would have probably loved to change my college, and my reason was that I was schooled at home.

I didn't get that opportunity to experience how life is outside my environment. My parents were there, my friends were there, and I was protected all through. I didn't really enjoy my student life.

I appreciate the experiences I have, they have shaped me into who I am today. I wouldn't have been the way I am if not for the kind of environment I learned from.

In conclusion, where we learn really matters, because some environments are toxic, we may learn academic lessons perfectly there but our lives may be ruined by the way of life of that school.

It's not just about academic knowledge, it's about what the environment does to our personality too.
