Forking

Can someone please explain to me what is the deal behind all of these forks?
If you are forking to create a new product I understand but what if you’re forking to improve something about a product or a coin and it’s widely excepted, why is the old version still in use?
Why isn’t the community united? What am I missing in this picture?

For context, This is a bitcoin core vs. bitcoin cash conversation. Sorry I’m new to steemit so if I’m doing this wrong let me know!
