Esparsetten-Widderchen ■ Crepuscular burnet

Zygaena carniolica (Scopoli, 1763)

The crepuscular burnet is a day-active moth from the family Zygaenidae. The bright red spots on the wings indicate that I am poisonous. Both the caterpillar and the moth have prussic acid in their bodies, which makes them inedible for predators. The crepuscular burnet has a preference for purple flowers and therefore you can often see it on flake flowers and scabious during the day. The Zygaenidae flies on sunny lime-lean grasslands in a generation from June to August.

The moth is extremely sociable and it is not uncommon for numerous crepuscular burnet to gather to spend the night together. Why the Zygaenidae gather in so-called sleeping societies is still not clear.

The eggs are laid on the underside of the leaves of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) and horn clover (Lotus corniculatus). The caterpillars feed on the leaves and pupate in the environment. In many places I could discover numerous caterpillars. The search was easy, because most of the caterpillars were already grown up. The leaves of the plants are eaten from top to bottom.

My search for the pupae turned out to be more difficult, because apparently the caterpillar does not pupate on the food plant. I could only find one single cocoon on the flower of a small burnet.

Numerous moths and caterpillars give reason to hope that this pretty moth can be observed again next year.

Wow what an orgy of moths lol. Unless you put some glue on the flower :-)

You got me now! Seven days and seven nights I sat before the dry stalk. I stuck glue on it over and over again and waited until they were all sitting there. Joking aside, of course not! As I had already written, it is a freak of nature where it is not yet clear why so many people gather at one and the same hide.

Its looking pretty good wings red spotted and which is harmful as some acidic matters belongs its wings and body. Perhaps its one of the best category for its own natural beauty, you caught the perfect one for your best collection.

I didn't know there were any poisonous moths, they're still beautiful.

Each species has its own strategy to survive. For me this Zygaenidae belongs to the most beautiful ones.
