When talking about "toys that come to life" 99.99% of people think of the Toy Story movie series, the industry's most famous "living toy" franchise in general terms. Some other people will think of the slasher horror saga Child's Play, also known as simply "Chucky". There will be people who will have the memory of another living toy movie called "Small Soldiers", which was very good and I always wanted to have a toy of the characters. And very few people like me, besides having thought of the previous movies, will also remember a horror and slasher movie, again, quite old and that when I was a kid I was a little traumatized, centered on some pretty creepy toys that killed people called: Puppet Master, although as its name suggests they were puppets and not toys technically, you could say that they fall into the same category of "toys". Toy Story has had several video games, in fact, I did a review of one of those games not so long ago, but there is a small saga of video games (it has two installments) that is also based on toys that come to life, a quite entertaining and visually striking platform game that I have had on hold for a long time. It is one of those many games that I should have played several months ago but for life's reasons I have always put it on hold.
That's why today's Retro Review is about: Clockwork Knight.

The game features the classic "the protagonist's love interest is kidnapped and we must go to his rescue" storyline. Centered on Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III or simply Pepper, a very brave but somewhat clumsy toy soldier, he is in love with Chelsea, who is a fairy that is part of the mechanism of a clock, you know, that figure that comes out of the clock when a certain time of day falls. But Pepper is not the only one who is after Chelsea's heart, but Ginger another soldier knight, also wants to conquer her, so these two characters are always a constant struggle for their love. However, one day Chelsea is kidnapped by someone unknown at a time when the room where all the toys were all the light goes out for a few seconds, so these two gentlemen toys embark on an adventure to see who saves his beloved, but as things could not be so easy, several toys that were previously friends of Pepper are controlled by some mental force that makes them aggressive, so to meet their goal we must also face them and get to where Chelsea is. Visually it is a pretty good game that many will remind them, in terms of graphics, to games like Donkey Kong Country, as it presents the same graphic style.

With 3D models but pre-rendered in 2D, the characters have a design that, in addition to being eye-catching, have a certain aspect of depth, so that the eye makes us believe that we are facing a 3D game but it really is not. The design of our character is very good, his design with golden armor, mustaches and a rather clumsy but determined personality, is reflected both in the gameplay with the movements he makes thanks to his excellent animations and we can also see it through the cinematics with which this game has. This being a very interesting aspect that the developers achieved, as it manages to convey his personality and charisma only with his movements, this game does not have voices for the characters, so representing that only with expressions and animations was something quite interesting to see for the time in which this game came out. The scenarios are also made with the same graphic style as with the characters, so they also have a fairly marked depth, despite the fact that we are in a 2D environment.

With very varied scenarios, full of decorative elements and at a playable level, with a very entertaining and sometimes somewhat challenging platform design, this is a visually quite good game, which manages to create such a striking atmosphere that we know immediately that we are facing an environment where everything is made of toys and that is a visual element that is quite well recreated in this game. But there will also be much more "normal" scenarios, such as kitchens, rooms, drains, libraries, all elements that for our protagonist are gigantic being a small-sized toy. The design of the enemies is also very good and varied, especially highlighting the design of the final bosses, which have a fairly large size compared to our protagonist, these being the game designs that have a better visual work. At the musical level is at the height, a very good musical level, with melodies that allude to the epicness, adventure and also the classic melodies that we could expect from a game of this style. There are excellent songs performed by a woman whose name I didn't have the decency to research, but all in all, it's excellent, the musical genre is Broadway style and reminded me of the song sung by Pauline in Super Mario Odyssey.

At the gameplay level we are facing a horizontal scrolling platform game with very conventional elements, being able our protagonist, Pepper, to jump, run and attack with his weapon, which the typical "key" that is used in some toys to make it work. We will be able to use that tool as a sword to eliminate our enemies. We will have to stun some toys first to be able to eliminate them and also after stun them we will be able to throw them on other toys.This tool also works as a key that allows us to open certain "doors" that lead us to other places in the stage. One aspect that I didn't like so much about the game is that it has a time limit to pass the level, so we don't have to waste a lot of time in each one. Like any platform game, we have the classic items that give us extra lives or recover the total life of the character. The boss battles after beating several levels are very entertaining and challenging. But another aspect of this game that I did not like so much is that it is quite short and can be completed in a short time, so you are left wanting to play more, but luckily there is a sequel which I will be playing in a few days. All in all, an excellent game in terms of visuals and music, a conventional but entertaining gameplay and although it is short in length, it is worth playing.

Cuando se habla de “juguetes que cobran vida” el 99,99% de las personas lo primero que piensan es en la saga de películas de Toy Story, esta es la franquicia de “juguetes vivientes” más famosa de la industria en términos generales. Algunas otras personas pensaran en la saga de terror y slasher: Child's Play, también conocida como simplemente “Chuky”. Habrán personas que tendrán el recuerdo de otra película de juguetes vivientes llamada “Small Soldiers, la cual era muy buena y siempre quise tener algún juguete de los personajes. Y muy pocas personas como yo, que además de haber pensado en las anteriores películas, también recordaran una película de terror y slasher, nuevamente, bastante antigua y que cuando era pequeño me traumo un poco, centrada en unos juguetes bastante tétricos que mataban personas llamada: Puppet Master, aunque como su nombre lo indica eran marionetas y no juguetes técnicamente, se podría decir que entran en la misma categoría de “juguetes”. Toy Story ha tenido varios videojuegos, de hecho, hice una review de uno de esos juegos no hace tanto tiempo, pero hay una pequeña saga de videojuegos (cuenta con dos entregas) que también se basa en juguetes que cobran vida, un juego de plataformas bastante entretenido y visualmente llamativo que he tenido en espera desde hace mucho tiempo. Es uno de esos tantos juegos que debí de haber jugado hace varios meses pero por motivos de la vida siempre lo he dejado a la espera.

El juego cuenta con el clásico argumento de “el interés amoroso del protagonista es secuestrado y debemos ir en su rescate”. Centrada en Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III o simplemente Pepper, es un soldado juguete muy valiente pero algo torpe, este está enamorado de Chelsea, el cual es un hada que forma parte del mecanismo de un reloj, ya saben, esa figura que sale del reloj cuando cae cierta hora del día. Pero Pepper no es el único que está detrás del corazón de Chelsea, sino que Ginger otro soldado caballero, también quiere conquistarla, por lo que estos dos personajes siempre están una constante lucha por su amor. Sin embargo, un día Chelsea es secuestrada por alguien desconocido en un momento cuando el cuarto donde se encontraban todos los juguetes se va la luz durante unos segundos, por lo que estos dos caballeros juguetes se embarcan en una aventura por ver quien salva a su amada, pero como las cosas no podrían resultar tan fácil, varios juguetes que anteriormente eran amigos de Pepper son controlados por alguna fuerza mental que los vuelve agresivos, por lo que para poder cumplir con su objetivo debemos también enfrentarnos a ellos y llegar hasta el lugar donde se encuentra Chelsea. Visualmente es un juego bastante bueno que muchos les hará recordar, en términos gráficos, a jugos como Donkey Kong Country, ya que presenta ese mismo estilo gráfico.

Con modelos en 3D pero prerrenderizados en 2D, los personajes cuentan con un diseño que, además de llamativo, presentan cierto aspecto de profundidad, por lo que al ojo nos hace creer que estamos ante un juego en 3D pero realmente no lo es. El diseño de nuestro personaje es muy bueno, su diseño con armadura dorada, bigotes y con una personalidad bastante torpe pero decidida, se ve reflejada tanto en el gameplay con los movimientos que realiza gracias a sus excelentes animaciones y también lo podremos ver por medio las cinemáticas con las que cuenta este juego. Siendo este un aspecto bastante interesante que lograron los desarrolladores, ya que logra transmitir toda su personalidad y carisma únicamente con sus movimientos, este juego no cuenta con voces para los personajes, por lo que representar eso únicamente con expresiones y animaciones fue algo bastante interesante de ver para la época en la que salió este juego. Los escenarios también están hechos con el mismo estilo grafico que con los personajes, por lo que cuentan igualmente con una profundidad bastante marcada, pese a que estamos en un entorno en 2D.

Con escenarios muy variados, lleno de elementos decorativos y a nivel jugable, con un diseño de plataformas muy entretenido y en algunas ocasiones algo desafiante, este es un juego visualmente bastante bueno, que logra crear una ambientación tan llamativa que sabemos de inmediato que estamos ante un entorno donde todo está hecho de juguetes y eso es un elemento visual que está bastante bien recreado en este videojuego. Pero también habrá escenarios mucho más “normales”, como cocinas, habitaciones, drenajes, bibliotecas, todos elementos que para nuestro protagonista son gigantes al ser un juguete de pequeño tamaño. El diseño de los enemigos también es muy bueno y variado, destacando especialmente el diseño de los jefes finales, los cuales cuentan con un tamaño bastante grande a comparación al de nuestro protagonista, siendo estos los diseños de juego que cuentan con un mejor trabajo visual. A nivel musical está a la altura, un nivel musical muy bueno, con melodías que aluden a la epicidad, aventura y también, a las clásicas melodías que podríamos esperar de un juego de este estilo. Hay canciones excelentes interpretadas por una mujer de la cual no tuve la decencia de investigar cuál era su nombre, pero en definitiva, es excelente, el género musical es al estilo Broadway y me hizo recordar a la canción que canta Pauline en Super Mario Odyssey.

A nivel jugable estamos ante un juego de plataformas de scroll horizontal con elementos muy convencionales, pudiendo nuestro protagonista, Pepper, poder saltar, correr y atacar con su arma, la cual la típica “llave” que se usa en algunos juguetes para hacer que funcione. Podremos usar esa herramienta como una espada para eliminar a nuestros enemigos. A algunos juguetes tendremos que aturdirlos primeramente para poder luego eliminarlos y también luego de aturdirlos podremos arrojarlos sobre otros juguetes. Esta herramienta, también funciona como llave que nos permite abrir ciertas “puertas” que nos llevan a otros lugares del escenario. Un aspecto que no me gustó tanto del juego es que cuenta con un tiempo límite para superar el nivel, por lo que no debemos perder mucho tiempo en cada uno. Como cualquier juego de plataformas contamos con los clásicos ítems que nos otorgan vidas extras o nos recuperan la vida total del personaje. Las batallas de jefe luego de superar varios niveles son muy entretenidas y desafiantes. Pero otro aspecto de este juego que no me gustó tanto es que es bastante corto y se puede completar en poco tiempo, por lo que te dejas con gana de jugar más, pero por suerte hay una secuela la cual estaré jugando en pocos días. En definitiva, un excelente juego a nivel visual y música, una jugabilidad convencional pero entretenida y aunque es de corta duración, vale la pena jugarlo.
