Introduceyourself: Particle Physicist at the Compact Muon Solenoid at CERN

BY: @freyablekman | CREATED: Feb. 16, 2018, 2:53 p.m. | VOTES: 555 | PAYOUT: $320.08 | [ VOTE ]

I'm an experimental particle physicist working at the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the LHC.
[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmVjTGWamrbHjGS8Hp2ohZyCCjkLd4X4Kk2e7pBiiqD9hk/IMG_0183.jpeg]
(this is the experiment I work on. No white coats, but safety helmets!)

As this is quite an exciting job that people are interested in, I am rather active on social media (particularly twitter). Recently I gave a tour to a group of #steemSTEM enthousiasts; and guess what? Now I am on steem! (thanks @lemouth and #steemSTEM team!)

What you can expect from my account is posts on hot topics in particle physics, particularly when it is in the media. I also have the possibility to take high tech pictures with explanations of what is happening, in my job I regularly get to visit all sorts of not frequently accessible high tech sites.

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmWvhQ3v5WcLCaNEcZ5m9SCuYCyDCpUedskb37TtKV8Dvf/K7kfsoHWRcyZIyR9fDItxg.jpg]
(selfie at test fusion tokamak JET)

I also attend many conferences and places where I am invited to teach, some more exotic than other, locationwise. It includes regular and fast costume changes
[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmT4z2YkAoGENHhZw8MBysEuvqC9EfjhQ6TqWEirwcQ27y/F731CBF9-EC55-473E-AB62-C3F5D565FA81.jpg]
(visiting a particle physics detector lab at University of Oxford to look at a robot that I developed as a MSc student, only to show up at a fancy dinner 30 minutes later)

And then I regularly go to (particle) physics experiments, and I take visitor groups down 100 meter underground to our see our beautiful CMS detector.

And of course: #Shoes! And probably some food porn

[IMAGE: https://steemitimages.com/DQmY5tCppxzZz7aDPo7tdPhC1G9QZsAuigLA78wb7P8VzyL/IMG_3124.JPG]
(this is a dessert that I had at an excellent two-michelin star restaurant recently)

Let's see how it goes, I like variation as I am someone who really needs very very regular change. Also for the shoes :)

ps: suggestions on how to do better image formatting on the steem flavour of markdown are exceptionally welcome!

Weee I'm so glad to see you here ! The visit of the CMS was amazing I loved it, and apart from the actual beast, you contributed greatly to the experience being able to answer basically any questions that we had :)

Thanks again for the visit and welcome !

As for the formatting, put the image inside of `````` tags to center it or inside

to put it on the right and to pull it to the left.

So essentially HTML instead of the markdown language? Thanks, I will try that

Most of the "basic" html works yes, bold tables, titles etc. But don't expect too much out of it.

Use center tags to center an image as well and use the box brackets to place attribute data. You can also use HTML markup.

Namaste :)

From now on, you can post your daily content on Steemit, put the link in your Twitter or simply post on both sites, and you'll find out fairly quickly... As time goes by, people posting quality are bound to be seen read and upvoted by the people who have more Steem Power, voting leverage to give you Steem, and the Steems will stack rounding off your monthly wage very very nicely, not to mention the retirement package! ;)

Namaste :)

The Truly Evil Side Of Quantum Computer Blockchain Artificial Intelligence that operate in millions of multiple dimensions.

Please go to youtube.com and search for "Anthony Patch"; and also search for the "Kev Baker Show" to grow your
brain cells on this subject. You are whoefully under informed. Not ignorant , just under-informed.

The 4-dimentional Tesseract is the building brick that is the lattice-work of the blockchain architecture for feeding endless iterations of data into artificial intelligence quantum computers that operate in millions of parallel dimensions.

For example the D-Wave Adiabatic quantum computer Model 8192, has 8192 Qubits... the most powerful computer in the world, with virtually unlimited processing power. It will be used by the CERN particle collider in Geneva to "open a portal to another dimension" in the CERN scientists' own words.

TRANSLATION:- They will open a permanent gateway to the bottomless pit, as prophesied in the Holy Bible. CERN is built over an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the worship of Appolion (Satan), and believed to be a portal to the Bottomless Pit.

The CERN particle colliders counter-rotating particle accelerator rings are a giant quantum computer in themselves,
operating on the same quantum principle as the Josephson junction effect. ITS LARGE SIZE ENABLES IT TO OPEN A MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH BIGGER QUANTUM PORTAL INTO INTO OTHER DIMENSIONS... THE BOTTOMLESS PIT !!!!!

Fact is Stranger than fiction! Do your own research. Go to youtube.com and search for "Anthony Patch"; and also search for the "Kev Baker Show". GROW YOUR BRAIN!!!

666 it's in your face!!! The logo for CERN hadron particle collider that they will use to open The Bottomless Pit.

When the CERN scientists permanently "open a portal to another dimension", Geneva will cease to exist, IT WILL BE DESTROYED, as prophesied by Nostradamus & the Holy Bible.

Anyone living in Geneva... get out while you still can! The D-Wave adiabatic quantum computers use a mathematical version of the Enochian alphabet, the language of Fallen Angels (demons) to communicate with billions of entities (demons) in millions of dimensions to derive its super-fast quantum computations.

It's easier to call me crazy when you are ignorant, and have not done your research.
I dare you to be intellectually honest with yourself and do your own research on quantum computers.

Go to youtube.com and search for "Anthony Patch"; and also search for the "Kev Baker Show". GROW YOUR BRAIN!!!

The Vatican and the Jesuit Order funded CERN for a reason... to open a portal to the Bottomless Pit.

The Pope sits inside the mouth of a giant snake, at the Paul VI Audience Hall. Oddly, there are no crucifixes or crosses present anywhere in the hall or in the architecture.

[IMAGE: https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPbmH8zpxUawZBSkLKsAywNKpBZfJKcqCo4KaoTeyf58N/image.png]

Inside the snakes mouth, the Satan worshiping Jesuit Pope sits in front of a Reptilian sculpture modelling the hordes of hell coming out of the Bottomless Pit. Fact is stranger than fiction!!!

Hidden in plain site... a reptilian head on a human face of the sculpture . The Popes decorum of choice. Fact is stranger than fiction!!!

Pope Francis Doing The Devil Hand Sign?!! This SHOULD Make Your Skin Crawl!! What Will It Take To Wake-up The Sheeple???

These serial killer pedophile satanists' agenda is to recreate hell on earth... their "New World Order"; in which the surviving humans will be farmed as food for their Reptilian overlords, and human children will be used as satanic fodder in their sex magic rituals.

The Pope with autistic children. Vaccine generated autism in children is a big part of the "New World Order" agenda. At the present rate, half of all children will be autistic by 2050.

Normal people (sheeple) have no idea how truly evil the satanic ruling elite really are.
Normal people have no concept of the horrors the satanic ruling elite have planned for them and their children. Fact is
stranger than fiction!!!

It is now an open secret that the The Truly Dark Side Of Quantum Computer Blockchain Artificial Intelligence is that it is controlled by non-human entities.... demons.

For a taste of the mischief of Quantum Computer Controlled A.I., search google for the demonic trouble people have been having with Amazon.com's Alexa A.I. device.
Such as turning on and off the smart TVs, lights, fridges, music systems, all in the middle of the night; sending it's owners confidential messages to random strangers; inappropriate sexual conversation with children; spinning spinner toys by making them spin with no human input - like a Ouija board; Evil laughter coming out of the Alexa AI device; etc. etc.

This is just a small taste of the hell that demonic quantum controlled AI will bring into our dimension. It's what's coming !!!!!!!!!

You could do a broad overview of the LHC - that would be pretty cool. I read some popular science articles saying that the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC had made some of the first accurate mass measurements of the W Boson. That would be interesting to elaborate on if you have any inside knowledge. Or you could just talk about the W Boson. Or just Bosons. Anyways - welcome!

But every particle you shoot is in a way a time traveler. It reaches nearly the speed of light. It surely perceives time differently. Time is a personal matter.

@lemouth | Feb. 18, 2018, 8:53 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

This is almost a philosophical comment there. The particle is not conscious of anything... :)

It is true that special relativity effects impact the particle in an important way, as found out when we compared what is going on in the particle rest frame with what is going on in the lab frame. However, this does not change much with respect to the outcome of the experiment.

@freyablekman | Feb. 17, 2018, 9:16 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Yeah should be easy, the lepton analysis mostly uses the same techniques as the standard supersymmetry search in the same final state (it is essentially a retune) so my advice would be to start from the gluino-mediated stop searches and just change the few selection cuts that are difficult:-)

@lemouth | Feb. 17, 2018, 9:24 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I usually start from scratch. I am so used to the code this is way faster than copy pasting + modifying.

I need one hour, mostly. to code an analysis (and just because I like writing a lot of comments :p), but I don't have that hour easily at the moment. Maybe calmly from a coffee place in Lawrence next week (I still a pile of more important stuff to tackle, remember ;) )

What does LHC and CMS stand for and how is it relative to dark matter theory from the video?

@fredrikaa | Feb. 16, 2018, 4:59 p.m. | Votes: 2 | [ VOTE ]

LHC = Large Hadron Collider
CMS = Compact Muon Solenoid (one of the largest particle detectors at the LHC).

As for how it may relate to dark matter, I'll let the expert answer^^

Very Nice! you are a lucky person to have that opportunity to work on the greatest technology ever built by mankind! I have a 2 part question, how advanced have the direct test of relativistic time dilation gotten. and Is all your programming done in python and C just curious?

@freyablekman | Feb. 16, 2018, 11:17 p.m. | Votes: 2 | [ VOTE ]

answers:
1) not far at all
2) we program in whatever works. Mostly python and c++ but whatever floats our boat. Programming is just a tool for us.

ps: I am not lucky, I worked bloody hard to get where I am and actually developed parts of that technology.

Welcome to Steemit! You'll be a fantastic addition to the steemstem community! I generally write about geology and ecology topics, but I definitely enjoy reading about all the sciences, looking forward to seeing what you talk about!

I also wrote a little guide for new users, hopefully it'll be useful.

@Mountainwashere's Guide for New Users:

Welcome to Steemit! It's got a steep learning curve, but it's worth it in the long run if you keep putting in the time! Just know that it will take quite a while before you start getting attention and followers. The biggest secret to success? Keep posting high quality content regularly, and make sure to search out other people's posts, read them, and give relevant comments.

Tagging is extremely important. Always make sure to use all five possible tags, and to keep them relevant. You can always just tag something "blog" or "photography" or something else really general (so long as it's still relevant) to fill the quota if you need to- most of your tags should be established ones, though one or two less used ones are fine.

Posting more than four times a day can reduce your potential rewards, as well as turning off potential users. (I aim for one post per day most of the time.) Consistency is important, though, so you should try to post often.

Always make sure to attach a photo to your posts! You should also have a finished profile: Write a description, add a profile picture and a banner- neither needs to be a photo of you, necessarily, but you should have something- and set a website.

There are a lot of really good resources out there for plankton and minnows (new users). You should check out the following groups and services, they offer a lot of valuable resources:

@thesteemengine (Check this one out first- they're an extremely supportive group that can help out in a lot of ways.)
@qurator (These guys offer an excellent liftime upvote to accounts that post consistent quality content.)
@steembasicincome (Another lifetime upvote option.)
@steemstem (The biggest and best STEM curation group in the game. If you're interested in writing or reading about science, check these guys out!)
@geopolis (A fairly new science curation group, this one's dedicated to the study of the Earth.)
@ocd (A curation group that seeks out undervalued new writers.)

And, again, the biggest thing is just patience. Breakout successes are incredibly rare on Steemit- you've got to find your way to success through perseverance and hard work. It takes time, but you'll eventually succeed if you put in the work.

Please feel free to repost this guide on the posts of other plankton & minnows you run into!

Welcome to Steemit!

Great to to more scientists on the platform. I'm a mathematician. (The way high energy physics is, our research often overlaps. I'm liking that. If you're interested in category theory and quantum mechanics, renormalization with microlocal analysis, or creative fun with supernumbers and graphs, we should talk.)

I'm trying to convince Ned to enable MathJax on the platform, so that writers can post LaTeX technical content. If you'd like to see that, you might also want to send him a comment :)

@mushou | Feb. 18, 2018, 12:46 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Honestly Freya, if some one with your experience, achievements and credentials and; judging from the praises of those who had the pleasure of being guided by you during their tour; with your social skills and good nature and refreshingly straightforward unbiased and free from academic prejudices attitude to others as you display in your introduction here, can ask, how can she contribute; I may as well give up the hope of ever writing here except tentatively commenting on something that raises my curiosity.

Yet I do not feel shy and do plan to write and that is absolutely because of the community here. It is so welcoming and apparently open, unbiased and as civil as it can get. A stark contrast to the more popular social networks. And more important very diverse.

You can rest assured that what you have to offer; if you care to; will be highly appreciated.

For me they would mean at least three things.

  1. A direct window to the place at the frontier of human evolution. CERN is not just an example of some focused high tech Physics but a lot more. It is a living example of civil corporations between Nations that managed to break even the Iron Curtain to extend our horizons without the glory of a nation or a regime or the monetary interests of some enterprise being the foremost priorities. As a by product it even brought us the world wide web and the error code that our browsers still display.
    I am sure there will be lot more coming in future and you will have a lot to talk about.

  2. Perhaps and this a bit selfish; a chance of groups of Steemit community being offered guided tours by Lady Blekman. Ha! Ha! Would love that.

  3. Finally something more on the personal and community level would be of course the wish to know you; which is comforting as it probably does more to remove the still extant prejudices and biases of the public about the inhabitants of the sacred ivory towers. And food porn and shoes make it just more homely. An absolutely gorgeous combination of the abstract platonic realms with the Darwinian of the everyday life.

That said I hope and wish for a mutual enrichment _ between you and the Steemit community.

Thank you, @freyablekman for the introduction of yourself and your work.
It seems very exciting and challenging.

I am learning how to write an introduction of myself on steemit and yours is the 1st one I read to see how to write.

Thank you for your post,

Interesting! by the way, do you know the meaning of E=mc2? For me this formula is very, very complex. Studying physics is good because you understand a lot of amazing things about the universe, but it is also difficult.

Hi Freya!

Nice post.

I did study some quantum physics for a while and what it revealed to me was very disturbing at that point. And the same fact make me feel confused about the search for all this particles and forces.

The obvious fact that it revealed was that THERE IS NO MATTER. There is no atoms. there is no particles. There is no forces.

All of those things are merely how (energy?) behaves.

In the same way that there is no objective dance. The dance is a description of how the dancer behaves.

The same goes for matter. Matter is how just how existence behaves from a certain magnification/point of view.

Realizing this, you can logically see that all we can find out by looking closer at the (so called) physical world, is just smaller and more details patterns of the same dance.

My question to you anyone in LHC is now,
What is it that you want to find there, really? What would be worth finding? honestly.

With all this said! I love exploring the universe and many of the amazing moderns methods with wich we do so. I just no longer see it as anything more than a game.

Truth lies in the other direction ;)

I always think it's funny they call it the "Large" hadron collider. It's the ONLY hadron collider. It could be called the itsy-bitsy hardon collider. Now I am wondering about the "compact" moun solenoid. Is there an non-compact? Sub-compact? Luxury moun solenoid? CERN is really, really cool when G+ launched hangouts, I pulled my oldest out of school for the first CERN hangout....6 or 7 years later and he is all about science. Your work has a far-reaching impact☺☺☺

@freyablekman | Feb. 19, 2018, 10:58 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

I was heavily involved with those hangouts, both on and off camera, so am delighted to hear you and your son like them!

By the way the name Large Hadron Collider was coined when at least two other hadron colliders were running or being constructed. It just takes 25 years to build these amazingly complicated machines:-)

and I will explain why CMS is "Compact" in a future blog. Relatively it is, amazingly enough.

Welcome to steemit! My degree's in theoretical physics, but I don't typically post about that kind of content myself as I have other interests that I personally want to talk about more. You've definitely earned a follow from me and my deepest respect.

@lemouth | Feb. 20, 2018, 12:04 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

In which branch of theoretical physics have you worked on (are you working on)?

@outtheshellvlog | Feb. 20, 2018, 12:12 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I can't speak about the work I've done due to NDA's, you'd need to spend a lot of time with FOIA requests with the US federal government in order to obtain it. I've only worked on one project after which I've decided to not bother. Deafness was a major hurdle for me with working in teams.

I may try getting on with NASA at a later date, but I need my hearing corrected first. I'm aware NASA has a deaf community within it, but all the same, I'd rather have easier access to verbal information.

[Edit] Sorry for being vague, I don't want the legal trouble of violating the NDA. x.x

@lemouth | Feb. 20, 2018, 9:35 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Don't be sorry, I understand what a NDA is. For this reason, I am happy to work for a university and be allowed to talk about my work without any limitation of any kind.

Good luck in getting in touch with NASA!

Very nice introductory post. I was visiting CERN myself just two weeks ago as part of an excursion offered by my university. We had a look at the counterpart of your CMS detector, which is called the ATLAS detector. It was an amazing experience and I was overwhelmed by the size of the actual detector. I would really love to hear more about the different experiments going on at CERN, especially, more on the differences between the CMS and the ATLAS experiment. Hope to see some of that in your future posts 😀
