My wife and I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, a very warm part of Brazil, but also great for growing fruits. Because of that, we got used to drinking juices and eating fruit. There is one specific fruit that is Brazilian by origin and became popular around the world, called Açaí. It looks like a blueberry, but just visually. It is usually consumed in smoothies. It became popular in Brazil because it is a refreshing way of consuming a high-nutrient fruit, rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins, like blueberries, for example. In Brazil, you can add so many things to the smoothie. I love to add just strawberries to it, which makes it a bit more acidic and sour. My wife, like many other Brazilians, likes to add banana to it, and I just read something curious about this mix.

Banana gives more consistency to smoothies, especially if you are mixing with a fruit that is so watery, like strawberries. Also, bananas add natural sweetness. However, a 2023 article from the University of California (UC) Davis suggests something interesting: a specific enzyme in bananas interacts with the flavonoids from the smoothie, which may reduce the absorption of some beneficial flavonoids that would help our health.

It can make sense if we think of smoothies sometimes as a big mix of different chemical compounds. Despite being natural, they can have reactions with each other. The enzyme that they studied is called polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and it is already known to react with flavonoids. The enzyme is the same that makes bananas turn brown (also apples and pears have this enzyme). The study was even funded in part by Mars (yep, the chocolate company), which provided a grant and cocoa flavonoid extract. So basically, the study had a group taking berry smoothies with banana + cocoa flavonoid, berry smoothies with just cocoa flavonoid, and just cocoa flavonoid extract without berries.

They decided to use the flavonoid extract just to control the intake of this compound and how the PPO could reduce the absorption of this healthy compound. And as a consequence, they published that flavonoid absorption was reduced by 84% if you had bananas in your smoothie. Let's just pause a bit and remember that this number came from 6 participants who completed part 1 of the study from a total of 8. So the study had a very small sample size. But we can see that the rationale behind it makes sense, and the study shows evidence that bananas may affect flavonoid absorption.

What we can conclude from this study is that, if you love bananas in your smoothie, it's probably not a big deal. Just be aware that maybe some of the beneficial compounds from berries and Açaí may be absorbed less efficiently. If you are more concerned about that, you should avoid apples and bananas in your smoothie. Flavonoids are associated with cardiovascular benefits and antioxidant activity. So that is something to think about in your next smoothie order!

Os pesquisadores optaram por usar o extrato de flavonoides para controlar a ingestão desse composto e observar como a banana poderia reduzir sua absorção. Como resultado, os resultados mostraram que a absorção de flavonoides foi reduzida em 84% quando se consumia banana no smoothie. Vale lembrar que esse número foi obtido com base em apenas 6 participantes da primeira parte do estudo, de um total de 8. Portanto, o estudo teve uma amostra muito pequena. Mas podemos ver que a lógica por trás disso faz sentido, e o estudo mostra evidências de que as bananas podem afetar a absorção de flavonoides.

O que podemos concluir deste estudo é que, se você gosta de bananas no seu smoothie, não há problema. Apenas esteja ciente de que talvez alguns dos compostos benéficos das frutas vermelhas e do açaí sejam absorvidos com menos eficiência. Se isso for uma preocupação, você deve evitar maçãs e bananas no seu smoothie. Os flavonoides estão associados a benefícios cardiovasculares e atividade antioxidante.
