I think the risk in crypto puming and dumping is the same. It can always change anytime unless the traders and investors stop trading.

Anything which is new and tries to change the present setup or the system in one way bringing new revolution we will find many opposition but the best part is to stick to it. I hope so, I was an idiot and sold all my belongings, maxed out my credit cards and emptied my savings to buy crypto. I remember I was going to do the same in December 2016. I was going to buy 20k in ether @10/unit but decided to renovate my basement instead. Now the house has been foreclosed on because the market tanked and my crypto portfolio looks like crap.

I have the same thought. We get so used to thinking we have to have either profit or invest where something important is being achieved, but I think that's aiming too low. We can invest in missions we care about, where there is a working beta at least, and where we can expect strong price appreciation. Maybe not the biggest returns, but I think the most sustainable ones are found this way, and either way we'll be happiest to stay with a coin through it's ups and downs if we believe in its mission.

So right. As much as I don't want to bash traders because we need them, we really need developers too who can back up the sentiment of crypto with the technology that really allows for wide scale adoption. We need more givers in the crypto space, not takers.

I am HODLing to Steem and EOS for sure :) Prices may dump again but I believe in the future values of these coins. ICOs are definitely high risk and high return. Yet I had no success in getting a high return yet (sobs).

Same here ( even when prices dumped lately I was waiting to get down more as not much cash to use so need prices to dump more so to buy more Steem and eos ... finally prices getting up again) (sobs) 😢

Me too, especialy Steem, i expect (and this is not a financial advice) that 1 Steem after 10 years worth 1000 USD. That is a market cap of +/- 270 billion USD, which is achievable. Look for example to Ethereum, 2 January 2017 1 ETH worth 8 USD, 15 January 2018 1 ETH worth 1390 USD. So that was only 1 year and 2 weeks for Ethereum. So if i say after 10 years 1 STEEM could worth 1000 USD, yes it could. Why not?!

While I've not carefully read STEEM inflation rates compared to adoption rates, I'm quite sceptical of STEEM reaching 1000 USD. I'm not saying it's not possible, but there are a few key points to consider:

1 Why don't I buy STEEM myself? Because I can basically get it for free by just writing posts. Now of course that's no easy task. Most posts get next to nothing in return, but at the same time, I believe people will be hesitant to buy something which can theoretically be obtained almost for free and which is constantly being produced.

2 While investors and optimistic users currently keep the prices up, the actual investor-independent value of STEEM is based on influence. Influencers can buy STEEM to get more exposure on their writing, advertising, news... This exposure will only be worth something if Steemit consists of both consumers and producers. I see a tendency these days that people just write, but don't read. They leave the upvoting to curation trails and bots. A million user content network is worth nothing if people don't consume its produced content. I find a lot of value in the Steemit community myself, but I'm not sure outside influencers will see it the same way. Unless you actively engage in the community, Steemit isn't really a very good place to go to just have a good read.

But then again there are other factors like Steem's superior performance, SMTs... which makes me optimistic. It will be exciting to see;)

The most people (especialy wealthy people) don't have the time and the patience to earn some Steems just because it's for Free. If they believe in the project as an investment opportunity and they see the benefits, than they will invest in it. And the people who like to earn some Steems for Free, they will leave Facebook and that kind of outdated Social Media and move to Steemit. And of course, nobody knows what will happen in the future, but I still think that Steem will be a huge Social Media platform, it's only a matter of time. Let's say, we hope! :)

Dont forget steem goes through decimation every about 3.5 years to limit the available supply and keep its value.
I think when considering the value which a coin can obtain you have to consider its supply limit I can't see coins with an ucapped supply limit or very high ones reaching extreamly high values per unit like doge or bcn or steem scarcity is a measure of value gold wouldn't have its value if you could easily find large amounts just lying around the place

I've been following Tim Draper's analysis for sometime now and I can conclude that he is a really optimistic crypto veteran and I really love his optimism.

it is so risky investing into ICO, especially we didn't know what it is, it's like you wanna eat an unknown fish, that fish might have a poison that could kill you, so it is better to research that kind of fish before eating it. The same on investing ICO we have to know what they are, do they have an active community, you can find them from GITHUB whether they are actively developing their platform if it's an open source, Do they have an active and reliable team?....

ICO no, but Top 100 Cryptos yes. The future will show how much profit you can make or what you can lose, but the majority of investors see the future and I think, the big ones are today to big to fail completly.

I believe Steem and Golem are two coins that will be around and have value. Steem has the best working and actively used blockchain and is just in its infancy stage, it has a first mover advantage as far as smart media token is concerned. Golem has solved a huge cloud computing issue and is already live with its Brass Golem project, just like Amazon had a rainy day fund, Golem (GNT) has half a billion in fiat to continue to fund the project. Just my 2 satoshis. Cheers.

I agree completely that 1600 coins are far too many and we need a shake out with significant consolidation. The issue is, this is nothing like stock pump and dumps. Stocks are part of companies that can go bust. Crypto coins can go to zero but won’t fail unless every single miner (in POW) ceases to mine the chain. Prices are based on pure speculation, so it’s difficult to see what’s reasonable. The last drop was over 60% yet nothing really failed, all coins are now generally moving back up and if the crypto space rockets, it looks like all coins will go up! Until the space is more mature and projects traded on their actual merits, this is likely to continue!

I agree with skipping the ICOs. My portfolio is up overall even after the horrid first quarter, except for my ICO purchases. And I came in during the height of the market in Dec.

I think the best buy for most investors is coins already on at least one exchange (that isn't ether delta).

Just buy 100$ of the top 11-20 in market cap.
Hold it like hell, and the profit is pretty easy.
For less risk, less gain, got with the top 5-15.

And hold a little btc of course, it's always going to be ok.

Crypto is still in its infancy, and the money that has entered in the last few months would blow your mind.

It truly​ won't be long where most shitcoins are turned to dust and the "value" they pulled from BTC will be returned.

I currently hold a Mix or Platform and Dex coins as its pretty clear they will lead the charge.

Steem has far more "value" than bitcoin. Gold was traditionally a store of value simply because it had no other use... and was scarce. Follow the use cases.

This is far more like the adoption of cars over horses. There is no going back to centralization... as long as your crypto is working for you then you'll be just fine.

True, but most people want quick money....

Too many people have figured out how to take money from the market without depositing much if any. If you create a billion coins, and only put 1,000 on an exchange, and buy those thousand for $1 each, you instantly create a 1 billion dollar project. Pay some “influencers” and give some out via airdrop, to create a buzz. That way new investors can slowly purchase your 900 million as you leak them on an exchange, and you never have to work again. That’s how to effectively take more than you put in, and it’s way more lucrative and less risky than injecting fiat.

Fat tail risk is common in unregulated market. How do you take advantage of fat tail risk and make money from them? High risk high return ......most new ICO are overvalued ....so you have high chance of losing money except one secret..... you create your own ICO or your relative create one ICO. Otherwise forget about new ICO ....just focus on top 10 ICO....if the iCO are good eventually it will go to top 10. Then only start to invest ...your risk is low and potential of making money is higher.

The value of steem can skyrocket if the content is correctly valued based on merit. How well this is implemented in code will determine how Steems reputation rises. FB and other social media platforms were benefiting from user generated content and the business model was built around the exploitation of visitors content feed in most cases visitors not even knowing this fact. In the end, now it seems privacy was also zero. The fact that steem developers decided to return the value of the content generation back to the creators in itself is refreshing.

I believe it is BEST to invest into something that you know got a ROLE in future. Most people just look at temporary picture but don’t understand that the real deal is their content, IF it’s good then only they have chance to work themselves. I go for such options only. Apart from the obvious ones like Bitcoin and all those, I believe good upcoming options shouldn’t be ignored.

I totally agree with Mr. Draper's statement that we are witnessing the birth of a world changing technology. I mean when you have mega companies like Disney, Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft, IBM and many more investing in blockchain technology, and having them make it a point to let everyone know they are, is a all out bat signal that we are in for a very big bull run in the near future.

While I am but a simple crypto miner with a modest farm and by no means a financial advisor, I truly believe diversification if key when it comes to any investment especially one as unpredictable as cryptocurrency. I tend to keep half my portfolio in top performing coins that have proven to be solid but are currently well off their highs in addition to buying tokens backed by good programs, allstar teams and by companies with deep pockets like the ones I mentioned above. I then cash out 25 to 30% of my monthly take (did I mention I love being a miner) and then invest the rest in higher risk speculative coins/tokes that while they might go bust, they also have the potential to moon. Those are just my 2 cents. Happy mining/investing.

I would say the main risk is the fair of missing out (fomo) and buying in at the market peak I always try to buy when it's retracting
