Snow Trees

Who is looking forward to hitting the slopes this winter? Hopefully the white stuff is not too far away. Fresh powder snow dampens sound in a way that has to be experienced before you really understand it. The sense of quiet comes from the high porosity of loosely packed crystals of freshly fallen snow which trap sound waves. The shot was taken on Hudson Bay Mountain just outside of Smithers in Northern British Columbia, Canada.

Beautiful powder and looking pretty deep. I did not know the reason for the lovely quiet of fresh fallen snow. Great stuff for #sciencefriday :)

Yes quite dramatically; like your wearing noise cancelling headphones.

Looks pretty chilly there, too! Nice capture, there. It's been years since I've seen conifers in the winter like that. It's mostly deciduous trees here.

I pareidoilied (I don't think that word is meant to be verbed but anyway XD) the thumbnail and saw a bunch of people in white cloaks despite knowing they're snow covered trees XD It's a great shot :)

The snowfall was quite heavy, it's remarkable how I cover those trees.

haha! howdy sir intrepidphotos! I'd say in order to cover those trees to that extent it had to have snowed at least a couple of feet, that's a wonderful picture!

@intrepidphotos | Dec. 10, 2018, 4:33 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Yes there are several meters (say 6-12 ft) of snow at that location.

@janton | Dec. 10, 2018, 4:36 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

holy moly! then the road crews must be fantastic around there!

@intrepidphotos | Dec. 10, 2018, 4:37 p.m. | Votes: 3 | [ VOTE ]

The local ski resort (Powder King) gets 45 feet of snow a year; so yes the Canadians do have a good snow plow network.

45 ft a year! lol. amazing! thanks for the information, that's mindblowing.

@nuoctuong | Dec. 10, 2018, 6:53 p.m. | Votes: 3 | [ VOTE ]

Wow! Is there a live tree underneath that pile of snow?

Indeed
