English

Today I would like to show you some photos and a DTube video (now replaced by the Vimeo version) from water striders (family Gerridae) in our little pond which I have made already in 2017.

Initially the video shows how a small ground beetle (family Carabidae), which is actually a rather good swimmer, tries to reach the rescuing water's edge.

But suddenly some water striders notice the vibrations caused by the little insect. Water striders are predatory bugs which suck their prey. Water surface tension and tiny hydrophobic hairs on their tarsi allow them to move very fast on the water surface. Finally the water strider turns the beetle on its back and tries to secure its prey.

In the second part of the video a water strider attacks a red mite. However, its hull is too stable to be pierced by the proboscis of the water strider.

Deutsch

At first some pictures of different inhabitants of our pool:

Water is one of the principal needs of all living things, also thirst-cooling and gives life. strider is a carnivorous animal which means they live from eating other animals where food animals are mostly insect & animals a small fall in the water. Strider has the advantage of running, quick moves and perched on the water without drowning When strider who entered its territory is a female, then male gerridas area owners would do the females & marriage.

@oceanpris | March 23, 2018, 3:54 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

@jaki01 | March 23, 2018, 8:32 a.m. | Votes: 4 | [ VOTE ]

@oceanpris | March 24, 2018, 3:18 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

@jaki01 | March 24, 2018, 11:32 a.m. | Votes: 2 | [ VOTE ]

Könntest du dazu nochmal kurz was sagen?

@jaki01 | March 23, 2018, 8:41 a.m. | Votes: 3 | [ VOTE ]

Is there any advantage to use DLive instead of DTube or do you suggest to use both hash tags?

I think #dlive is attracting to newbies. So ,for the men having many followers and high reput

The birds singing in the background means that it is the Spring time already in your place, right? ;) It is one of my dreams to visit Europe at this time of the year.

Oh, this video is from summer 2017, but I just commented it now.

And yes, in theory we are having spring already, but the last days were still very cold (partly we had degrees below zero). Today it is somewhat warmer and sunny though. :)

That is Gods creation showing its class.. We have seen unique talents among insects mostly there ways of catching preys. This for sure is one of them.

@jaki01 | March 24, 2018, 11:34 a.m. | Votes: 7 | [ VOTE ]

@asperger-kids | March 25, 2018, 12:43 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

@jaki01 | March 25, 2018, 8:47 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

@asperger-kids | March 25, 2018, 10:28 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

@jaki01 | March 26, 2018, 12:08 a.m. | Votes: 7 | [ VOTE ]

@jaki01 | April 2, 2018, 2:53 a.m. | Votes: 8 | [ VOTE ]

So schwer?

@jaki01 | April 3, 2018, 3:24 p.m. | Votes: 9 | [ VOTE ]
