Hello people of Hive, I hope this post finds you well?

My name is Jax, and for my first post on Hive I wanted to share my latest sketchbook illustration with you, this epic space scene! Check out some progress shots below, I hope you enjoy! What do you think went wrong to send our hero hurtling untethered into the blackness of space? Are they under attack, or did he leave the stove on?

I start off going over a rough pencil sketch with some fineliner, just focussing on perspective and linework at this stage.

Our poor spaceman is getting a bit too close to the linework, I want to make sure he looks as adrift as possible to really capture that helplessness, and anchoring him to the rest of the drawing reduces this effect. A quick resketch later, and he is back to looking pretty hopeless!

Now the linework is done, onto adding some colour.

I wanted to let the lines do most of the work so I just added some simple watercolour for flashes of colour. The white watercolour paint was perfect for lightening the areas around the explosions to add some illumination.

I'm happy with the results, even though watercolours are not my go to so they look a bit amateurish in places! Let me know what you think, I'm new to Hive but look forward to sharing my art with you, and basking in all of your creativity as well!

Thank you, I'm only 2 posts in and already receiving a great welcome, you seem like a lovely bunch bots bots and all. I'm finding my feet in sharing my art generally so its particularly intimidating trying to decipher a new platform, but totally worth it! I have been in and out of Peakd, it's a nicer layout I think, thanks for the tip! I guess I will just try to keep posting regularly and enjoying everyones content for now, unless you've got any other tips for exposure? I will certainly check out @heyhaveyamet as well.

Thank you, it was just a tight composition I wanted to cram onto an A5 sketchbook page, but I agree it looks like it could be part of a massive scene. Maybe I will come back to it digitally and add some more around!

That would be a lot of fun to do, I normally do single figures and portraits rather than whole scenes so there is already a lot more potential narrative here... watch this space!

I definitely will. I’ve actually got a project that I’m just starting that I would potentially really like to collaborate with you on. It’s a tesla punk space opera based loosely on the game that @elindos is creating right now on hive called eXode. Basically aliens attack all human outposts in the galaxy at once and the players ascape and then recolonize. I’m super excited about the game, (if you ever want to play get my promo code so we can start off on “nearby planets” and sort of be able to share resources and communicate ingame)

Anyway I’ve got a loose plot and stuff and the first song is mostly finished so I’ll start sharing about it soon but I’d love to have the music accompanied by a graphic novel or even eventually animated. I’ve never done anything quite like this before so I can’t give any time frame or guarantees atm about anything but I’ll keep you posted as I go and if it seems like you want to get involved just let me know :)
