Who doesn't love a good police thriller? Among British series, there are always some that stand out, and that was certainly the case with Criminal Record. I'd been wanting to watch it for a while; it already has two seasons, but I finally got around to watching the first, which has an excellent start. I watched the first three episodes back-to-back, and then I had to find time, whenever I could, to watch the whole thing.
A call to the emergency services triggers a series of events that delve into a past case and pit two police officers from different jurisdictions against each other. Detective June Lenker is very intelligent and one of those idealized police officers typical of fictional stories. A woman who pays attention to every detail and has a sense of justice that's very hard to find in real life.
On the opposing side, and the one who does the most remarkable work, is Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty, a police veteran who, along with his friends, formed a group called the 62 and who, it seems, crossed some moral and legal lines in the past. He's a somewhat mysterious character, one the story plays with, because although he has a rather malevolent aura, there are small details that leave us puzzled. Is he racist? Is he part of an ultranationalist group? What is he hiding about the Errol case?
The dynamic of the story lies in how these two police officers escalate their conflicts. While June seeks to uncover the truth—to find out if an innocent man is serving a 24-year prison sentence—Daniel seems determined to prevent anything from the past from coming to light, even if it means harming and destroying June. The writers manage to weave a compelling story, with new discoveries in each episode that complicate matters and generate more questions. This is a winning combination for creating an exceptional police procedural.
Of course, it's not perfect, although it's addictive for those of us who enjoy a good police drama. The influence of many current productions is evident here. The protagonist is a woman, in this case, of African descent. The antagonist, the one with more darkness than light, is a straight white man suspected of belonging to racist political movements and other such nonsense. The political correctness cliché was inevitable, but the story is good, so this time I don't mind.
It has a second season, which I haven't seen yet; I don't know when I'll have time. I don't know how the story will continue, perhaps with a new plot, a new case, because at the end of the first season, the case they're investigating is solved, and, of course, the shadows cast on a particular character are even greater. The second season will surely continue the conflict between them.

Los guionistas logran tejer una buena historia, con nuevos descubrimientos en cada episodio que complican las cosas y generan más preguntas. Esta es una buena combinación para crear una historia policíaca excepcional.
> Por supuesto, no es perfecta, aunque resulta adictiva para quienes disfrutamos de un buen drama policial. Aquí se nota la influencia de muchas producciones actuales. La protagonista es una mujer, en este caso, de ascendencia africana. El antagonista, el que tiene más oscuridad que luz, es un hombre blanco heterosexual sospechoso de pertenecer a movimientos políticos racistas y demás tonterías. El cliché de la corrección política no podía faltar, pero la historia es buena, así que esta vez no me importa.
> Tiene una segunda temporada, que aún no he visto; no sé cuándo tendré tiempo. No sé cómo continuará la historia, quizás con una nueva trama, un nuevo caso, porque al final de la primera temporada, el caso que están investigando se resuelve y, por supuesto, las sombras que se proyectan sobre un personaje en particular son aún mayores. Seguramente la segunda temporada continuará el enfrentamiento entre ellos.
