Every social platform on the Internet seems to be currently monetized, and this wasn't the case 5 to 10 years ago.
Recently I started getting a lot of notifications from Instagram, apparently I opened an account many years back (because I'd seriously never consider it nowadays) but I never really got to use it.
However I used it a few times back in the day because their camera filters made up for extremely poor cameras and people used them a lot, but nobody talked about how they get to store your photos on their app even though you choose to delete, they still somehow restore the photos or actually important the ones you have on your phone gallery which seems to actually breach your privacy.
Also they access your contacts and suggest your contacts who are on the same app, asking you if you'd like to add them as friends, and then on your profile page they get to suggest random contents to you of people exfoliating, of AI fabricated videos of snakes with hairs, and so many other AI junks that are no longer allowed on X and YouTube.
So I was very curious why people bothered with creating AI junks and saw that it was basically because they also offered monetization opportunities for creators.
So why are people actually not taking it seriously the way they'd take Facebook or Instagram very seriously, especially since there was literal money on the table? For me I think it's a few reasons: the money is either too poor, the barrier to entry is too high, or the monetization system is not solid enough.
However if you're an AI specialist and knows how to mass produce slops, then this is probably for you. Also this is a celebrity platform too, and celebrities can just post snippets of their lives and get eager people to comment, like and you know...... do everything that relates to engagement.
However I wonder why people a lot of people aren't exactly talking about Snapchat, you'd hardly see any discussion of them on other media, you know how people talk a lot about YouTube on X and vice versa? Yeah, just like that, this isn't the case with Snapchat.
So lately they've intensified their marketing strategies, and they now aggressively send notifications to people especially if you have their app installed on your phone or you have an account.
The most surprising thing is that TEMU is probably one of their biggest advertisers. The app meaninglessly spams TEMU adds wherever you click, and it just feels like a horrible experience.
I think Snapchat was a once chill app, they made mad money from being one of the first movers in their social era where money was golden, but sadly people seem not to use them as lot as before, and they're probably trying to do stuffs a little bit differently.
> So
....... I recently deleted 60% of everything I've ever uploaded there, I felt it is now a breach of my privacy and I virtually gain nothing from being there, I still leave the account to use it to check up on a few people who are trigger free and likes posting their pictures for fun
.....but I'm guessing it's now moved from being an app that you use because you want to take better pictures alone. Now they're masters of everything, and that's probably because AI is currently replacing beauty, graphics design and everything. I guess very soon, AI might start replacing banks, companies and everything, it's brutal but that's just the reality.
I think with AI a lot of things will become possible and the brutal reality is that some platforms are going to lose their relevance, Snapchat was a dominant name, but not anymore.
