Yes. It is easy.

Step 1 - find all new comments
Step 2 - filter them to only comments that are shorter than 30 characters, or something like that (saves time)
Step 3 - filter them to only comments of users with lower reputation (saves time)
Step 4 - get their previous comments
Step 5 - If the user had posted the same comment more than 5 times - flag it.

interesting idea. I wonder if that is possible with the amount of comments we get, there is no flagging authority that can handle that amount of spam.

Catching all the intended comments would be hard, but it also doesn't take much... I'm "not much" in the klout department, but I hid some obvious copy-pasta yesterday with a very low percentage flag... even a "fractional" (less than 1%) flag vote from a 50,000SP account could deal with a LOT of garbage.

I think the idea here is less to "catch everyone" than to send a clear message to the hordes who are arriving here from Amazon Mechanical Turk that "clicking for cents" is NOT a viable (profitable) endeavor on Steemit.

I posted in LATIN (and other rare languages).

a few minutes later i had comments like "good post" and "nice"

you do not, I meant the earlier bots comments with useful links, sorry I assumed people knew about the early days of bot comments.

I did get some people who tried to comment in a meaningful way to some things I posted and their English was pretty bad so I figured they were real and just trying their best to say something that is not in their primary language. I love the fact that there are people from all around the world here. I read tons of interesting things every day. In short, I really like this site.

Yes, for the people like me, whose native language isn't english this place has one extra benefit - we can improve significantly communication skills with english speaking audience. Probably sometimes this can annoy "aborigens" but difference in culture backrgound can realy help both sides " to think out of box "

I feel the same way, I came to steemit to share my thoughts and ideas, to document my journey. And I was lead to believe that steemit was a platform for that kind of meaningful content and discussion. What I've found is mostly " vote my crap" and bot spam. Or straight up scammers some even contact me on Facebook scamming steem stuff. I'm not sure it's worth sharing anything here. Thanks for a good post.

I actually deactivated my facebook account for the summer. I was hoping to find content based groups and was wondering if there are groups here or is everything just organized under general subjects.

I have a variety of interests and I don't want to spend all day trying to find true content. I am not interested in making money. I am happy to share ideas and learn from others. I thought it might be cool to meet like-minded people in person sometimes, too. We will see.

When you browse to Topics(tags) for each of your interests, say Nature for example, by default shows the trending posts for that Topic(tag). you can choose to see New, Hot, Trending and Promoted post within the Nature Topic(tag). I hope that helps you find true content.
As far as groups you can join external sites like Steemit Chat or the PAL Net on Discord but I don't think there are any group functions within steemit. Someone up in the comments on this post was talking about groups.

You are right, a lot of people are spaming like crazy and thinking that they will suceed on steemit like that, I hate that and I especially understand that because I converted two my big facebook group into steemit groups, this why I have very strict rules to post there, I feel sorry that is no block button on steemit, I usually mute such people !

How did you convert facebook groups into steemit groups? I have some with over 600 members and my own page I have 4500 friends. I thought it would be cool if I could connect them somehow. This site has more meaningful content than Facebook and I think it could grow pretty large if people use it for the right reasons.

People are just posting comments on steemit for the sake of getting upvotes. Now, I am also experiencing more user than bots who're posting random comment on my post. The comment which has nothing to do with my post are just unbearable. Minnows are really struggling nowadays on steemit to get some upvotes and earn some money. i don't know when this madness will end.

Yeah, That also happened to me many times over. My posts generally remains on 'new' page for a minute and then it vanishes. I had to go for marketing my stuff after getting tired.

Isn't the marketing more about building your network (and/or community, however you choose to see it)? I was aghast when I joined and saw the new posts page - how on earth was I going to wade through that to find any posts of value to me? But then I took more of the same approach I would take to going in a pub - I said hello to someone I knew, had a look at who was joining in the conversation in his posts, followed a couple of them and where I had something to say, joining the conversation on their posts. Only been here three days, so I don't know how it's going to pan out, but I would guess some will become a core part of the network, some more peripheral and some (probably the vast majority) will come and go. I think the received wisdom is a ratio of 1:9:99.

Dangerous path my friend. I would like no part in someone that has no vested interest in making sure that steem grows deciding what posts of mine to censor. Pretty sure that many feel the same way. If I want to post a comment that says "nice!" who are you to create a bot to block it? If you don't like comments like that...don't publish posts or mute all of your followers so you don't see their comments. No need to pay you to write a simple filter script and help spread censorship by supporting or posting it. Against the spirit of this platform. If somebody posted 10 comments with the same text in topics that were just opened when he posted, then the chances are pretty slim for this person not being a bot

I see what you are saying. I think that the right way is to change the game...convince the creators of steem and the 200,000+ users you are right. Like I said, don't hate the player, hate the game. I am a player in the game, if I just decide I want a new rule for all that doesn't make it a rule. Writing your own rule to censor bots off of everyone's feed I still think is wrong.
Write the code to protect your own account and offer it to people who are interested in it only? Maybe that is your answer.
Or...find out how to change the entire game.
I have no choice but to obey any rule change made by everyone including the developers. Get them to agree and allow them to code in the changes.

I agree that the two word "nice post" comments are lame. The one exception is @ionlysaymeep.

I disagree becase if you look at my comment history, my comments cover a lot of different topics. Some are longer, some are shorter (depending on the quality of the OP). One might think that I only comment for the reward, but that is not the case. I like Steemit for one reason: diversity. Where else can you such a broad range of topics in a compressed form? (Please don't say BuzzFeed....) It gets me to think outside of my perspective.

At the end of the day, a post with little effort/substance should get little reward, and so should the comments. Considerate curation helps, but there need to be some systemic changes that disincentivize spammy minnow/plankton behavior.

I agree and disagree as well. There are a lot of posts that I don't really understand but that someone put in a lot of time and effort to make and if I manage to get through the whole post and still don't understand but know that once I get more knowledgeable on the subject (like cryptocurrency) things will make more sense to me... for those types of posts I generally comment something like "great post, wish I understood it more" or "nice post, someday I hope to make more sense of it" and I don't see anything wrong with those comments but I also don't expect to be up voted at all.

Now don't get me wrong, those of us that type a "nice post" or "great post" type comment shouldn't be expecting an up vote for those comments but we should be able to say those comments without feeling like we are doing something wrong.

When you don't really understand the post, either because its on something you don't quite get (again like cryptocurrency for myself) or perhaps its in a language you don't understand but the pictures within it kind of give you an idea of what the post is about, then really the only comment you can make, if you even make one at all, should be "nice post" or "good post" because you can't really say anything else if you didn't really understand it.

It's like in real life when somebody in the store or on parking lot say to you : nice day and you reply : yes indeed. You feel good about this and also on steemit if somebody leave a comment on my post like this I'm glad. Sometimes two words are better than 100 upvotes from curation trail. At least in my opinion.

If it is brief but topical, I am all about that. If it is "hi, visit my page", I have no love for that. Engagement is always better than mindless curation IMO.

They need to chill with all the taboo rules of steemit that is not written anywhere on the welcome page. It will turn off a lot of new users n this will just become a blog forum backed by blockchain. So the nice post comments and follow me comments are spammy behavior? That's good to know. I get enough spam in my email. Now I like to take pics and post pics and sometimes I don't say much about the photos, but I do post some helpful writing tips for aspiring authors. I was hoping that would benefit people who are thinking about writing and just need a little encouragement or advice to help them work harder and produce better content.

Totally agree with you! I am the same way, so to say that on one post I comment "keep it up" doesn't mean that I'm just doing it for the upvotes or to get followers because I commented, I just truly mean it even if it's short. I'm not going to write a super long comment on everything I like, although a lot of the times I do lol, because I just wouldn't have the time. What I don't like is when people simply ask if I could follow and they don't even comment anything about what I posted on. :/

Rightly put, these short comments mostly have positivity in them, like appreciation, acknowledgement, gratitude, etc so it shouldn't be viewed as steemit real estate being wrongly occupied

Good one. I always tried to answer people who commented my posts at first, because its common decency. But after a while i realised alot of the comments were just spam. Now I always answer real comments AND upvote them - while ignoring the spammers/beggars. We have to encourage the behaviour we want to see!

I would much prefer real comments and start real conversations though.
If I had more engagement in my posts I would hate both spam and robots filling up my comment feed. It looks nasty and adds nothing to the post whatsoever.

That portion has attracted great content writers and inspired others to put a lot of effort into creating. Don't hate the player, hate the game. I personally think this game is pretty great.

the problem is you need to find a solution with most of free opinion and soft censorship. the best thing people can do is to ignore such spam comments by muting these people. flagging should be still reserved for illegal and inappropriate material.
I think in future there will be more option for every post creator where you will set rules for your "room/blog"

Spamming is an issue but sometimes one might like a post an not necessarily want to engage with the author. In such situations 'great post, nice post and keep it up' could be used. Yes you create content to generate reaction, interaction or just profit. I'm allowed to react in a way that suits me. Unrelated discussion and ads are what I consider distasteful.

Ive seen so many posts like this it drives me insane, and when i think theyre all done, i see about 15 more, every. single. day.

In addition to bots & users panning for free crypto it's also possible that some folk simply lack the ability to express themselves in a meaningful way, or are just plain apathetic.

A comment screening script or bot similar to that proposed by @investigation may become necessary, one that assesses the length of the comment & checks its content against word/phrase lists, but I imagine this would need to run server-side.

Steemit has Cheetah searching for plagiarism, why not Chatterbox to detect comment submissions that are too short or generic and, potentially, warn the user on consequences for reputation if they choose to proceed with submission.

I totally agree with you, this is becoming very annoying. These people giving crappy or unrelated comments do not know that they are doing much harm to them self while acting in such way. I wish if a bot could be invented to ban all these crappy comments once they are posted on any article.

I hear you. These short little meaningless comments are super annoying. I usually take the time to write at least 3-5 sentences out in a paragraph format in response to people's written content. There is SO much junk out there on SteemIt, but that's the nature of this platform. This allows the quality content to stand out vs. crap content (which I'd say is 80% of the platform is crap content).

I have to admit I'm a bit surprised you haven't gotten any legit bot comments saying exactly those things. This has been a common gripe of the community since the price spike a couple months or so ago, myself included. I've come to think of those comments like training wheels. While some may do it longer than others, I've noticed that on a long enough timeline you usually don't see the same people doing it. It's always a wave of new names, and either they eventually learn and start engaging more genuinely, or they disappear after giving up all together and claim the system is "rigged".

@winstonwolfe, having been in this type of gig for almost 20 years... part of what we see here requires us to become brutally honest about (a) users of the site and (b) the overall objective of Steemit.

Based on past experience (and a huge pit of "failed" content sites!) these kinds of comments come-- broadly speaking-- from two two kinds of users:

People who authentically "want to be part of a social content site that rewards." They are the first ones you describe. They learn, they adapt and become lasting community members.

The PROBLEM comes from people who join "because it's a system to get free cash" Elsewhere-- Squidoo, Bubblews... other sites going back to 1999... we called them "clicking for cash cockroaches." Might sound harsh... but they are mostly "transfers" from venues like Amazon's "mechanical turk" and other "clicking for cash" sites where they earn ONE CENT for clicking on ten ads and so forth.

Why a "problem?" Because their number is LEGION. Not "thousands." "Millions." Problem, not because of what they do, but because they are numerous enough to drown out ALL OTHER CONTENT if left unchecked. Problem, because after a while, legitimate contributors look at the spam soup and think "Yanno, this place kinda sucks!" and leave... while the "roaches" stay behind and keep mining their 1/10c per comment "until the well runs dry.

Some "freedomists" argue that "it won't happen on Steemit because we're on the blockchain!" Nice ideology, but WRONG. Being "on the blockchain" exempts us from all sorts of things.. but not from human nature. Sure, the blockchain will live on... but we'll also be sitting with 2-cent Steem, because INVESTORS will look at this and see Steem represented by a garbage pit... and that'll make it "just another shitcoin" in short order...

Gonna come out and say your mini rant hit the nail on the head better than @joesph's article. I read a shit ton on this site, after an article I'll read through most of, if not all of the comments, based on interest and debate. Then I will make a comment based on what I have read. After that I will generally hit edit and add, 'Great post' to clarify that I read the initial post. By the time you get through everything, you've really burned a lot of time. Garbage like people upvoting there own comments should be remedied in Hardfork 20, and people like this shahzaib should be jettisoned from earnings faster than an enema takes to kick in.

I agree if you comment on something you should follow topic. However I would urge you to consider the people commenting are just trying to figure steemit out and see if they can make a little money. Being new myself it does seem like a slow grind to create any income. The idea is that everyone on steemit should be able to make money and the more they make the more people will want in and drive up value this would cause the "whale" to have the most incentive to make the small fish that are trying to create quality content feel welcome and rewarded.

If I get those comments, I go to the person's profile and help them if I can. Many people have no idea of what commenting means and think doing this is a good idea.

If the person looks like they will never improve I mute them. Problem solved for me. I do what I can, but I can only try to keep my own profile interesting while helping steemit as I can. I'm new here and the workload is overwhelming.

@joseph I may be naive but I'm still giving people the benefit of the doubt. I think for the most part, these people are just clueless.

At first glance, it's obvious that there has been a huge influx of people here who's primary language is not English. That brings a cultural as well as the obvious language difference.

It has taken me a while to realize that sometimes a silent upvote is better than a vocally expressed, but meaningless, "good post, I agree".

And while I sometimes get frustrated, I will often reply to spammy comments with a link to a post explaining solid methods for creating a better community here on Steemit. Once in a while, it actually breaks through and I get a thoughtful response.

First of all you started a lame topic that has been brought up ton of time. Because you are a dolphin or whale and have dolphin whale friends, this post earning decent.
It is not fair to bash on minnows who leave lame comments and even advocating flags for something that can easily be ignored.
You were new at one time yourself.
As many more new users will be joining the community for years to come, these kinds of generic comment will be part of all topics.
Part of the issue is desperation for attention, so they just spam those lines whenever possible, just to be part of potential reward, not realizing it is actually hurting them.
Eventually everybody learns that it has not benefit for them and they stop.
So, don't hate show some love. We need to educate new users instead of bashing and flagging.

Steem is the platform. Steemit is a website. You can use Steem platform via busy.org, chainBB, or eSteem app. That's why I just call it Steem.
True, platform depends on users. But look around online, plenty of people using other social media platforms for 0 rewards. As people get introduced to steem, joining is no brainer.

True. Other social sites people use for free, but people are not likely to do that here because the precedent has already been set to expect to be paid. And the problem comes in when people see others making so much money and then look at their wallets and see the wealth and then they get angry and discouraged when they're contributing just as much or more but aren't making anything much.

It is my guess that people join Steemit the website for the possibility of getting Steem first and an outlet for their blogging/socializing second.

But, I do believe it's all going to work out. My prediction is that future hardforks will fix some things. I think they are just wanting to get as many people on the site as possible right now, which is a good thing.

Just my thoughts but people are more than welcome to respond to me in whatever fashion they would like; I have no desire to censor how they interact with my posts (within the legal/moral spheres of course). Many new uninformed users are coming into steemit to make an easy buck. They don't understand and know nothing about etiquette and general no spam rules. In time seeing they have no results with this they will abandon the community

Thanks for this! It's great to actually read an article that has a bit more insight into steemit rather than going through the generic FAQs. I got onto this to get back into writing again and found FB just attracts a lot of unwanted comments that somehow become more about the person than the post or Twitter that limits me to 160 characters. And the comments like nice post... I personally would love a question or actual comment. Still trying to figure out how this works exactly but I hope to come across more posts like this :)

I'm right there with you @joseph... with very few exceptions.

Yesterday, I even found myself flagging a few pieces of blatant "copy-pasta" masquerading as "real" comments... visiting the poster's page revealing that the same 4-sentence comment had been plopped on about 300 posts.

I also consider myself really tolerant... but here's the thing-- and this bears saying-- "I know this music." This kind of "blah-comment-soup" can destroy a user content site... and it WILL, unless active steps are taken to render it effectively worthless. That means those of us who actually care about content and care about the long-term well-being of Steemit need to not just turn our heads the other way... we need to be active participants; at the very least helping SteemCleaners & co. tag and flag obvious abuse of the system... because GUESS WHAT? If we don't do this, we won't have a system, 12 months from now.

Sure, there'll still be a Steemit, but we'll be sitting here in a cesspool of fluff, with $0.02 Steem because there isn't "something here" anymore, that anyone in their right mind will INVEST in.

I'm not saying we are here to be the "thought police" because this is intended to be a censorship free "alternative" social platform... but here's the analogy I like to use: Think of Steemit as a ship we're ALL sailing on. And now some of the passengers are thinking that "drilling holes in the hull" is the way they want to express their free speech. Are we all supposed to just "look the other way" in order for them to have their "censorhsip free" experience... so we can proudly ALL go down with the ship... in service of freedom? "The all drowned, but they were FREE!!" sorry, but from where I'm sitting, that's the same level of spiritual idiocy that drives the New Age industry...

Any comment is better than no comment. At least for minnows, it helps boost morale because it gives the sense that someone have taken an interest in your post. But for the more established steemian, yes it can be frustrating to see such comments but it js part of the ecosystem. Commenting is part of curation and just a small comment will allow the commenter a small share of the reward.

For me this platform is still really new and from my conversations it hasn't nearly reached it's potential audience. Your post brings up a good point to discuss the "meaningless comment".

In my opinion, this topic has the most bearing for new Steemians concerned with building an "interactive " follower-base and should be taken into consideration.

Well said,this is only my 4th week and i must admit i am guilty of having used those phrases myself the occasional time. But know i still use those phrases,but also try to add something of value to my comment,by mentioning something about the original post. This lets the author know you have actually took the time to read his post,and you're not just simply commenting for the vote.
You should actually vote for the post you enjoyed,for the actual content of it,regardless of how much it's worth or how many votes it has.If everyone did this the whole steemit community would benefit and grow more.

I had made it a point to respond to each and every one of the comments in my posts off late but in doing so I've discovered many people spamming and sometimes, dropping absolutely rubbish links which have nothing to do with my post. Think i'm going to be more careful in voting comments as well responding to them. I vote everyone as I feel it's a good thing to do but the comment spam has irked me a lot off late.

I'd argue that bot spamming is also a huge issue. I introduced a project I was working on yesterday via a new account and a post in the inntroduceyourself section and it got like 10 bot comments almost instantly. IT WAS SO ANNOYING AND STUPID!!!!! These bots want follows, they want upvotes, and they want STEEM. I felt attacked.

Now I know most people have good intentions with their bots... and I am working on a sort of bot myself. But people need to have some self control with these comment bots. They don't further the discussion... they are bots after all.

When new people join, how are they supposed to gain attention to get rolling? I'm not encouraging useless comments, or useless blog posts, for that matter. But, how would you suggest Steemit should funnel new users into productive contributions so that they are rewarded and stick around?

I think a lot of authors are actually rewarding comments like these, establishing a cycle positive reinforcement.

If we stop giving these comments value and continue to raise the threshold on what it means to add value and quality to content, then I'm sure this senseless cycle of spam circulating across our community will cease.

Successful sites focus on traffic and engagement and do not have people who criticize what everyone else is doing.

I think what we are experiencing is people learning how to use the system, and a lack of functionality to filter out a bit of the Spam. I think it will work out.

Typically half the content on a site isn't instruction manuals, etiquette guides, cheerleading, brand building, complaining, etc., about said site. Twitter would be a different place if telling people how Twitter works or complaining about not being retweeted or how people who misspell words was a way to turn a quick buck from new users. @whatsup if Steemit is the social media "society" of the future, then spam filters are the keepers of the peace. It isn't meant to punish with an iron fist, it just tries to preserve an ecosystem where the majority of users can enjoy.

Its important to only comment on the posts that are actually of interest to you - this way you are able give constructive comments or positive/negative comments. I love the fact that you posted on this topic because it is so true and spot on with what is happening. It bugs me also when I open up my comments to read them and there are two words "great post"...this does me no good. I feel the same way as you so about this, just keep in mind that there has been a surge in new users recently, many of whom are still learning the unwritten and unspoken guidelines this community follows. This requires a delicate touch to deal with properly, because outright telling people they're doing something wrong when they're still learning will make you appear elitist. A lot of people are probably coming from reddit, which is similar to Steemit at first glance, but very different after a closer look. We need to educate people and help them grow, if we're not careful we'll only succeed in driving them away.

Must agree with you, crystalize. The most appropriate way to comment on another's post is to READ the post, then write the response using quotes and information from the original post, something that, as you stated, is germane to the original topic. Thank you for your insight!

The interaction and commenting on the users posts, that have large Steem Power is actually encouraged by many people who write articles to advice the new users how to get easy money and faster. It is actually a good advice but it needs to be understood the right way, so interaction and commenting should be relevant to the post, otherwise is just shooting with a water gun. It only gets the post owners angry. Unfortunately those who are not willing to add some value to this great platform are so many and I am so afraid that they are going to ruin this incredible opportunity that we have or at least they are going to freeze the natural progress of this community.

I have to admit I have seen so many of those post it just about drove me away from here. After dealing with trolls and haters at YT I came here and found people that actually still write things and not do video of everything, I am learning to ignore them but when you see 20 comments on a single thread it gets old fast. An approach, which has pushed the elasticity of my patience bubble, has been to individually respond to each comment:
1. Thank each one for the comment.
2. Explain why such comments would not help in the long run.

I had a guy post, "Why don't ya guys get some hot content in here?" on one of my posts. It was confusing because it was about sex. I went to his page and he had posted that comment on like 30 different blogs with 30 different tags. Da Fuq?

On a slightly more serious (and hopefully helpful note) ..perhaps a change can be introduced so that comments have to exceed a certain character length before they're accepted together with a cross check against dictionary words to ensure a better than 50% chance that the comment will have some kind of coherence?

Seeing so many doing this, I get the same frustation as you do because it is just spam. I do have the patience, to write at least one comment back, where I try to explain that this spammy behavior will not lead to anything positive for him. He will not grow and mostly will be seen as noise. I build also an excel file to track the ones I'm telling, to see if they change in time. One, after 4-5 replies, really improved and gets now a lot of traffic to his posts. Seeing this I just keep on doing this. Every spammer turned into a content deliver is a win for the platform.

Suppose I think it is a nice post, but just want to let you know, I don't want to comment about it? I guess you could look at the level of the person commenting, if it is a level 25, perhaps he is just trying the thing out, if it is a higher level then maybe he really thinks it's nice, usually when it is someone who is just looking for a benefit he will say I upvoted you upvote my posts or something like that. Anyway, what harm does it do? OP's are hardly replying to comments nowadays much less upvoting them.

First of all, thank you for your post. I think it is the voice for a lot of us trying to figure out the Steemit game. However, this is just another medium for people to judge and have a of authority over others. The point of following is to upvote; regardless of content material; regardless if you agree or not. We are all in this struggle together! I have followers who support politicians I don't. What do I do? I upvote their content anyway! People need to stop being judgmental and support each other!

Even though many think otherwise...

Many quality content provider are keen engagement mavericks. They respond not only to quality content with curation and engagement by replying to comments, they also offer meaningful value-adds to existing submissions.

I just wrote this short article yesterday: How to Multiply your Comment Rewards, which hopefully encourages Steemians to place more value on the comments/replies they offer.

True it is not a great conversation starter and does not add much value to the post. I just say thank you and move on. But I loved and appreciate those comments which are engaging and inspiring and if I do receive such comments, I give them an up-vote. In fact I have nominated some of these comments to the "Comments Of The Day" contest.

We want to see an utopia world. A world where everything is perfect. Who has ever been in that world?

Steemit is like a world of its own. There exists old inhabitants and then newborns(minnows). The minnows are struggling to learn how to swim in turbulent waters. They also want to feed.

Go around and see average earning of the minnows, it will open your eyes to why there is so much desperation in the community.

The desperation to leave comment in great numbers is what brought about the issue of spammy comments.

The minnows discovered that they earn more money spamming posts that have visibility with comments more than on post authored by them which may never make it to the front.

I do hope we start addressing the problem from the main cause instead of pointing fingers.

Recommendation

All the dolphins, orcas and whales need to move round steemit and search for quality posts from minnows and try to upvote and resteem them. I believe that will help the challenges the platform is facing now.

There are few reasons that people do so. The biggest reason is some of the whales like Jerry Banfield telling people that steemit is amazing by just clicking upvote and get money.

In one of his video he keeps clicking upvote and telling people "look it is just crazy" with his face coming out of the screen.

He also tells people "aha, look. you just click on your comment and you get paid for it? Man, it is crazy. Steemit is different".

People watching videos like that exactly follow the instructions without creating real value. This adds to a huge spam on steemit. The result is those who are here for a quick buck do snatch it, but those who are innocent lose their voting power and abandon steemit despondently.

Agreed that some comments can be classified as junk and they are the show spoiler 🤦‍😡😈👿👹. But again it can be a very subjective way of looking at some of them 😇.

I know, many birthday wishes with the cliched Happy Birth Day doesn't make much sense when you don't even know most of your followers who are wishing you but they are still appreciated by many.🏵 🎗 🎺 🎸 🎻 💥💑 👩‍❤️‍👩

Some comments do fall on the borderline but they are not always spam.🤔

Recently, I've started giving a link back to my post in the footer of my comments. How will you consider such comments? A spam? An unpleasant one? or would it be acceptable? Most bloggers really don't mind it.

I will leave short comments on posts that Ive read, especially ones with links to other places so that I can find it again later to use the links that were shared. If I were on the computer I would use bookmark, but as far as I know this Steemit doesn't have a bookmark and its not an option on the phone Im using. I dont expect a comment like "Thanks for the link." to recieve up votes or thoughtful responses, but I also wouldn't expect anger. The whole platform and all the complaining and circle jerking is starting to become a little off putting. Like a private party, and a lot of folks saying new people arnt welcome. Just go home.

I get what you're saying and I understand it can be annoying, but I guess this happens on all social media platforms. I don't get a whole lot of comments on my Steemit posts yet, but I do have to deal with crappy/spammy comments on Instagram a lot. I try to just ignore these and focus on the real comments and engaging followers.

And sometimes, when one of my dedicated followers just comments "nice work!", I'm fine with that, I know how busy people can be and at least it shows me they're still interested in my work.

But maybe it's different for me, since I mostly post artwork and tutorials and I'm not much of a discussion starter ;)

I respect that you voiced your frustrations. That's not always an easy thing to do. Personally, if I read a post for the first time and see that some effort was put into it. Then I'll at least make an attempt to express my appreciation by saying some words of encouragement, let the writer know how I felt and follow them if I find their posts genuinely helpful. I think "good job" is the equivalent of someone writing "have a good summer" in your year book. It's the laziest most detached thing you can put as if to say " I don't really give a s**t but here's something to show people I acknowledged your existence. I feel it's one of those things that shows a lack and decline in humanity. People are being reduced to nothing more than data and I'm not okay with that..but anyways, sorry for the rant I just wanted to say

I see two ways the Steemit community can go with this.
1. A 0% upvote ability for a general "Thanks. I noticed your comment/support" that would have to be developed. I am small enough to have the ability to upvote with a penny, so I don't mind doing that unless it's too obvious that it's a bot. Barely takes time out of my day too.

1. Why not suggest that the whole community make a general rule to refuse payout on a simple comment of support or at least max it out at a penny?

In response to your post. I can honestly say that I am guilty as charged. The truth is that this system is kind of set up so that one learns as you go. One has to search through a lot of mindless posts before finding a truly engaging read. Just another minnow trying to move up the food chain! 🐓🐓

I understand your point conpletely. I am a minnow who has been bringing in new people to the community and all i tell them is learn how this platform works. All they seem ti care about is the reward so they start given silly comments just as you have posted . The problem to me is that they do not make any effort to read and understand the content of a post before adding their thoughts to it. Please do not get mad at people who do that by downvoting them but ignore them . i believe the ones who really want to stay will seek out the right way and do that later on instead.

Totally agree and I warned about this coming influx some months ago already - it is annoying to read this in your comments but also the spamming in chats is so bloddy annoying - ignoring it is sometimes hard

I have been debating on creating a post on comments verse upvotes, should you do both? I wish people were comment more, with that said if all the comments are like you mentioned above then please just move along. I simple don't understand how you can ask a question, sometimes a yes/no, and people still comment great post. I will never understand that!

Yeah, this is getting kind of annoying. Yesterday I posted a reading of Edgar Allen Po's "The Ravin". It was a video, clearly not my poem and the author was someone well known. First comment?

Agreed. Maybe the steemit platform should consider changing so that it causes a negative effect when someone places a useless comment.

I'm stuck, because I feel the same and agree with you but in this specific post the only "valid" comment is a encouraging one or a similar rant about my experiences with spamming users.

I fully agree that a good thought out reply will get more attention by serious thinkers. Today's world is more about the $$ than the actual content. I enjoy reading many articles but I don't always upvote or comment. I reserve that for those who inspire me or challenge me. Thanks for being honust and fortright with your article.

I've even had comments recently like "You're an amazing person. Follow me" and stuff like that, seems to think I'm out to get my ass kissed. Disgusting, and really couldn't be arsed to post more. Sure, more reasons than that, busy and all, but sometimes I think this is going down the drain, but then again find posts like this here

Totall agree with this! when i first started out on steemit, only a couple of weeks back, I was upvoting every comment that was made on my posts. it took me a few days to notice the same people leaving short meaningless comments on everything I wrote! I think they obviously noticed I was upvoting them regularly and just did it as a matter of course. I have since stopped and I am much more careful about the comments I upvote. needless to say, I have upvoted your blog and resteemed! lol ps nice post!😉
