비행기에서 토니 로빈스의 ‘머니’ 를 읽었습니다

로빈스는 자기계발 베스트셀러를 여러 권 써서 수천만권을 판 것은 물론이며 이를 기업화 하는데도 성공했는데 로빈스가 만든 기업들의 총 매출액이 거의 7조원(!) 이라 합니다.
유명한 책들은 Unlimited Power, Awake the Giant Within 등이 있습니다.

Money는 제가 2015년인가 독일 책방에서 봤는데 특히 처음 몇장은 너무 초보틱해서 이게 뭐야 하고 자세히 읽지 않았습니다.

그래서 독일 가는 비행기에서 전자책 뒤적거리다가 “아 이런 책이 있었지!” 이 책에 레이 달리오 얘기가 좀 나왔지? 해서 뒷부분을 찾아봤는데 – 이 책 정말 명작이네요!
로빈스 자신도 굉장히 유명하기 때문에 금융계 슈퍼스타 수십명이 기꺼이 인터뷰를 해 줬습니다.

핵심 인터뷰는 ‘레이 달리오’ 랑 했는데, 레이 달리오는 그 당시에도 세계 최대 헤지펀드 하나인 브리지워터의 대표였으나 당시에는 그다지 대중에 알려져 있지 않았습니다. 바로 이 토니 로빈스의 책을 통해 알려졌죠. 최근에 ‘원칙’ 이라는 책이 한국에 번역이 되었습니다.

브리지워터는 ‘자산배분’ 의 대가로 알려져 있습니다. 토니 로빈스가 계속 “보통 투자자들도 따라할 수 있는 간단한 자산배분의 방법을 알려줘… 알려줘… 힝..” 하니까 마지못해 달리오가 비법을 내놓는데요… 토니 로빈스는 자산배분을 잘 몰라서 엄청나게 감동했으나 이 테마를 어느 정도 공부한 저에게는 머 그렇게.. 막 와닸지는 않았습니다.

그러나 자산배분은 정말, 정말 중요합니다.

투자를 해서 돈을 버는 방법은 세 가지가 있는데

1. 자산배분 (어떤 자산군에 자금을 어느 정도 배분하는가)

2. 마켓 타이밍(어떤 시장에 언제 진입하고 빠지는가)

3. 종목 선택(구체적으로 어떤 놈을 사고 파는가)

대부분 투자자들은 3번에만 집중하고 1번, 2번을 깡그리 무시하는 경향이 좀 많습니다. 게다가 3번도 잘 못합니다. 그러고 왜 나는 투자를 하면 맨날 깨지지 하고 한탄합니다.

그런데 레이 달리오나 예일 대학 자금을 수백억 달러로 불려놓은 데이비드 스웬슨 등은 “자산배분에 수익의 90% 이상 달려 있다”라고 강조합니다.

저는 90%라는 비중과는 동의하지 않으나, 어느 정도 돈을 절약해서 그 돈으로 자산배분 하나만 잘해도 아름다운 노후를 보낼 수 있다는 것은 확실합니다.

그런데 자산배분이란 그다지 어려운 것이 아닙니다. 일단 이번 편에는 자산배분의 핵심부터 밝히고, 다음편부터 ‘보통’ 사람들이 쉽게 활용할 수 있는 자산배분을 살펴보고 레이 달리오 아저씨의 배분도 살펴 보겠습니다.

1. 자산배분의 3대 핵심

자산배분을 할 때 가장 중요한 결론부터 밝히겠습니다.

I. 장기적으로 우상향하는 자산을 보유

II. 상관성이 낮은 자산군들을 보유

III. 자산군별 리스크를 엇비슷하게 유지

이게 먼 소리여 하시는 분들도 많을 것입니다.

하나하나 살펴보겠습니다.

i. 장기적으로 우상향하는 자산 보유

머 당연한 말입니다. 자산배분이란 마켓타이밍과 달리 ‘치고 빠지지’ 않습니다. 저는 1년 1회 정도 포트폴리오를 조금 조정하는 정도를 추천합니다.

그럼 ‘장기적으로 우상향’ 하는 자산이란? 여기서는 장기적으로 물가상승률 정도는 따라가는 자산을 의미합니다.

주식, 채권, 부동산은 확실히 장기적으로 우상향하는 것 같고, 금, 현금, 원자재도 물가상승률 정도는 따라가는 것 같습니다. 제가 암호화폐 관련 책도 썼지만 솔찍히 비트코인 등 암호화폐는 저는 장기적 우상향 포텐셜이 있는지 잘 모르겠습니다.

“근데 주식이 장기수익이 가장 좋은데 왜 100% 주식 안해요?” 라는 분들도 계실 겁니다. 정말 장기적으로는 주식이 다른 자산군들을 이길 가능성이 높기는 한데, 문제는 주식이 변동성이 엄청 큽니다. 최근 20년간 한국에서는 주식 반토막이 3번 있었습니다. IMF, IT 버블 붕괴, 금융위기.
“미래에는 그렇지 않을거야” 라고 하시는 분들도 있을텐데 이건 희망일 뿐이지 현실과는 거리가 멉니다. 저는 한 80년 정도만 더 살다 죽고 싶은데 그때까지 주식시장의 반토막을 5번 정도만 보면 엄청 운이 좋았다고 생각할 것이고 대충 한 10번 정도 볼 것을 예상하고 있습니다. 제가 말한 5-10회가 맞는지 1회도 없을거라는 분들이 맞을지 한번 두고 봅시다.

근데 주식에 100% 걸었다가 하필 내가 은퇴하기 1년전 시장이 반토막 난다면? 또는 경제 위기 때문에 주식은 반토막 나고 나는 직장에서 짤리면? 네 노후생활 노잼 맞습니다.
주식시장 떨어지면 당연히 내 자산도 깨지는 거 당연한 거 아니냐고요? 그렇지 않습니다. 그걸 방지하는 것이 바로 자산배분의 위력입니다.

ii. 상관성이 낮은 자산군 보유

바로 조금 전에 중요한 포인트를 언급했는데요, 주식시장이 반토막나도 내 자산은 살아남아야 합니다. 그래서 주식자산이 망할 때 오르는 자산, 즉 주식시장과 ‘상관관계(correlation)’이 마이너스인 자산을 보유해야 합니다. 주식이 떨어지면 오르는 그런 자산을요!

그러니까 자산을 “오호! 분산투자 중요하지!! 그럼 재산에 각각 20%를 미국, 유럽, 중국, 한국, 일본 주식에 투자해야지!! 히히히 나는 스마트한 자산분산가!” …하면 안된다는 겁니다. 금융위기 오면 이 나라들 주식 다 함께 사이 좋게 손잡고 반토막 날거니까요!

그럼 주식이 깨질 때 선방하는 자산이 무엇이 있을까요? 다음 번 구체적인 자산배분을 짜기 전 주요내용만 말씀드리면:

한국 주식과 달러화의 상관성은 마이너스입니다.

특히 한국 주식과 미국 채권의 상관성은 마이너스입니다.

한국 주식과 금(Gold)이랑도 상관성이 낮은 편입니다.

대충 자산배분을 어떻게 해야 할지 결론이 나왔죠?

iii. 자산군별 리스크를 엇비슷하게 유지

이걸 유식한 말로 ‘risk parity’라고 하고 옛날 CAIA 공부할 때 잠깐 배우고 까먹고 있었는데 토니 로빈스와 레이 달리오의 토론을 하고 다시 떠올랐습니다. 조금 전 내용을 보시고 “오호! 그럼 한국 주식에 50% 미국 채권에 50% 자산배분을 하면 되겠네!” 라고 생각을 할 수 있고, 실제로 미국에서 몇십 년 전부터 “주식 60%, 채권 40%” 포트폴리오가 유행했습니다.

그런데 이게 그렇게 힙한 방법이 아닌데요… 그 이유는 포트폴리오 전체 리스크가 주식에 몰리기 때문입니다. 미국의 경우 주식 60%, 채권 40%로 배분을 하면 자금은 분명 60-40로 나눠졌는데 리스크는 95-5로 분산이 됩니다. 포트폴리오 리스크의 95%가 변동성이 훨씬 높은 주식으로 들어가 있어서 사실상 이 포트폴리오는 “거대한 주식 포트폴리오 + 조금 들러리 군더더기” 가 되는거죠!

실제로 미국 60-40 포트폴리오는 1987-2018년 복리 8.8%를 벌었으나 MDD, 즉 최대 낙폭이 30%를 넘었습니다!

두 자산군의 리스크 비중을 동일하게 가져가려면? 주식 20%, 채권 80% 정도로 포지셔닝을 해야 리스크가 50-50로 균일하게 배분이 됩니다.

그런데 놀랍게도 이 20% 주식 80% 채권 포트폴리오도 1987-2018년 복리수익이 7%가 나왔습니다! MDD는 그것과 비해 무시무시하게 떨어졌습니다. 30%에서 8.5%로요!

이게 자산군별 리스크를 배려한 자산배분 전략의 위력입니다.
