My Home Away from Home for Two Years

I used to work for an animal shelter called ADANA, in Estepona, southern Spain. It was a great non-profit animal shelter that took in most of the stray or abandoned dogs in the surrounding area. They did their best not to put dogs down unless they unfortunately had a contagious disease or something similar.

In the two years I worked there, we came across several hundred dogs and did our very best to find homes for every dog that came in our doors. I'm happy to say that a great majority of the dogs that came in got homes quickly, however there were some that have been there for years. It was a sad thing, thinking about it now, but these dogs were always so very happy and always put a smile on my face. You'd often see them lounging around in the Spanish sun or running around playing with each other.

Occasionally a box of puppies would turn up and I really don't understand why people would abandon them. I mean look at the guy above! I don't have any pictures of the dogs inside the kennels that aren't overly blurry because I didn't want to flash the dogs.

It's been four years since I've worked there, but whenever I'm back in Spain visiting my parents, I try to go back to the kennels to say hi to the dogs and donate some of my time.
