Es cierto que en Cuba la vida es incierta y vivimos con "la soga al cuello", sin embargo, los niños son la maxima prioridad y todo el mundo aquí hace lo posible y lo imposible por hacerlos felices, por mantenerlos ajenos a la situación. Es por eso que aquí también se celebra esta hermosa fecha con fiestas y actividades en escuelas y parques.

Hoy andaba cerca del parque de mi pueblo cuando una linda música infantil llamó mi atención. Así que fui y cuando me acerqué vi a muchos niños riendo, corriendo, cantando y bailando. En la glorieta había una actividad cultural con niños de las escuelas de la localidad. Hubo danza, teatro, canciones y mucha alegría. Me dio mucha satisfacción ver a tantos niños despreocupados y contentos.
>Today I was walking near the park in my town when some lovely children's music caught my attention. So I went over, and as I got closer, I saw many children laughing, running, singing, and dancing. In the bandstand, there was a cultural event with children from local schools. There was dancing, theater, songs, and lots of joy. It made me very happy to see so many carefree and joyful children.
El ser humano acostumbra a poner fechas simbólicas para resaltar acontecimientos y el 1 de junio es esa fecha del año en la que los pequeños de la casa se levantan con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja. Regalos, fiestas en el colegio, chucherías y mucha diversión. Pero pocos saben por qué celebramos exactamente este día. Y la historia que hay detrás, no es ningún cuento de hadas y esto lo supe hace mucho tiempo mediante mis lecturas e investigaciones.

Gifts, school parties, treats, and lots of fun. But few know why we actually celebrate this day. And the story behind it is no fairy tale — I learned this a long time ago through my reading and research.

La cosa empezó en plena Segunda Guerra Mundial, en 1942. Los nazis hicieron dos masacres que helaron la sangre al mundo entero, una en el pueblo de Lidice (antigua Checoslovaquia) y otra en Oradour (Francia). En Lidice, por ejemplo, encerraron a 88 niños en cámaras de gas. Sí, leíste bien, niños. Los mataron solo por serlo.
>It all began in the midst of World War II, in 1942. The Nazis carried out two massacres that sent chills down the world's spine: one in the village of Lidice (former Czechoslovakia) and another in Oradour (France). In Lidice, for example, they locked 88 children in gas chambers. Yes, you read that right — children. They killed them simply for being children.

Después de tanta barbarie, en 1949 la Federación Democrática Internacional de Mujeres se reunió en París y dijo: "Hasta aquí hemos llegado". Y decidieron que el 1 de junio iba a ser el Día Internacional de la Infancia, con un objetivo clarísimo: proteger a los niños y exigir a los gobiernos que gastaran menos en guerras y más en educación y cuidado infantil.
>After so much barbarism, in 1949, the Women's International Democratic Federation met in Paris and said: "We have come this far." And they decided that June 1st would be International Children's Day, with a very clear goal: to protect children and demand that governments spend less on wars and more on education and child care.

Y ojo, que aunque hoy asociamos este día a regalos, diversiones y fiestas (que está genial, ojo), el verdadero significado es más profundo. Esto no es el cumpleaños de nadie. Es un llamado de atención de que los niños tienen derechos: a vivir sin violencia, a ir a la escuela, a tener atención médica y a que los dejen jugar sin ser explotados. Por desgracia, hoy todavía millones de niños trabajan en vez de estudiar, o sufren las tristes consecuencias de guerras que no han empezado ellos.
>And mind you — although today we associate this day with gifts, fun, and parties (which is great, don't get me wrong), the true meaning is much deeper. This isn't anyone's birthday. It's a wake-up call that children have rights: to live without violence, to go to school, to receive medical care, and to be allowed to play without being exploited. Unfortunately, today millions of children still work instead of studying, or suffer the sad consequences of wars they didn't start.

Celebrar el 1 de junio está muy bien para ver la felicidad de los niños abriendo regalos. Pero no podemos quedarnos solo en eso. Es importante explicarles que a ellos no todos los niños tienen la misma suerte, y para recordarnos a nosotros mismos que proteger la infancia es cosa de todos los días, no solo un día al año. Cuidar a un niño no es un favor, es la obligación más bonita que tenemos los mayores. ¿O no?
>Celebrating June 1st is fine for seeing the happiness of children opening gifts. But we can't stop there. It's important to explain to them that not all children are as lucky, and to remind ourselves that protecting childhood is something we must do every day, not just one day a year. Caring for a child isn't a favor — it's the most beautiful obligation we adults have. Don't you agree?
