El sábado 16 de mayo viajé a Buenos Aires en una excursión organizada por el instituto de inglés. Durante años pagué las clases para mis hijas. Mi mamá no pudo hacerlo conmigo cuando era chica; éramos seis hermanos y para mis padres era imposible. Pero ahora, después de que mi segunda hija rindiera el First, me animé y hace dos meses empecé a estudiar inglés yo también.
La propuesta de la directora del instituto fue recorrer una zona de Buenos Aires vinculada a la inmigración irlandesa, en el barrio de Belgrano R.
El tour comenzó en el Barrio Chino. Ya sé que no tenía mucho que ver con la temática irlandesa, pero para quienes vivimos en el interior no son tantas las oportunidades de ir a Capital Federal, así que había que aprovechar el viaje. Recorrimos los supermercados con sus productos típicos y almorzamos allí. Lamentablemente no comimos en un restaurante chino; no todos están acostumbrados a ese tipo de comida y, cuando uno viaja en grupo, debe adaptarse al él. Ya habrá otra oportunidad para ir especialmente a disfrutar de la gastronomía china.
Después volvimos a subir a la combi, que nos llevó hasta el punto de inicio de la excursión en inglés. Toda la charla fue en inglés y lo bueno es que entendí bastante. Aprendimos sobre la gran hambruna irlandesa, cuando un virus atacó los cultivos de papa y muchísima gente murió de hambre. Muchos emigraron hacia distintos destinos y algunos llegaron a la Argentina.
Conocimos la iglesia de San Patricio: austera, pintada completamente de blanco en su interior y con solo las imágenes de Jesús, la Virgen María y San Patricio. Por fuera, toda revestida en ladrillo, con una arquitectura típicamente irlandesa. Las casas del barrio también conservan ese estilo.
Hicimos una larga caminata por Belgrano R hasta llegar a un bar irlandés, donde algunos tomamos la merienda y otros aprovecharon para disfrutar una cerveza.
Fue una experiencia hermosa, no solo por el paseo, sino también porque sentí que, después de tantos años, finalmente me animé a cumplir algo pendiente conmigo misma.

On Saturday, May 16, I traveled to Buenos Aires on a field trip organized by the English language school. For years, I paid for my daughters’ classes. My mom couldn’t do that for me when I was a kid; there were six of us siblings, and it was impossible for my parents. But now, after my second daughter took the First Certificate exam, I decided to give it a try, and two months ago I started studying English myself.
The school director suggested we tour an area of Buenos Aires linked to Irish immigration, in the Belgrano R neighborhood.
The tour began in Chinatown. I know it didn’t have much to do with the Irish theme, but for those of us who live in the provinces, there aren’t many opportunities to visit the capital, so we had to make the most of the trip. We walked through the supermarkets with their typical products and had lunch there. Unfortunately, we didn’t eat at a Chinese restaurant; not everyone is used to that kind of food, and when you travel in a group, you have to adapt to the group. There will be another opportunity to go specifically to enjoy Chinese cuisine.
Afterward, we got back on the van, which took us back to the starting point of the English-language tour.
The entire tour was in English, and the good thing is that I understood quite a bit. We learned about the Great Irish Famine, when a virus attacked the potato crops and many people starved to death. Many emigrated to different destinations, and some ended up in Argentina.
We visited St. Patrick’s Church: austere, painted entirely white on the inside and featuring only images of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and St. Patrick. On the outside, it’s clad entirely in brick, with a typically Irish architectural style. The houses in the neighborhood also retain that style.
We took a long walk through Belgrano R until we reached an Irish pub, where some of us had a snack and others took the opportunity to enjoy a beer.
It was a wonderful experience, not only because of the walk, but also because I felt that, after so many years, I had finally mustered the courage to do something I’d been meaning to do for myself.
