Quick video on YouTube's controversial Partner Program... and the alternative that is dTube
Turning the screw
So I was reading that YouTube is tightening up the rules on what content can run ads. Not only do you need to have 10k lifetime views on your channel. You also need 4k hours of watched time on your video (in the preceding 12 months) and 1000 subscribers, for the 'privilege' of having crappy ads run on your content.
Broken model
These new thresholds elude to the fact that the existing ad based revenue model is broken. Fundamentally it is too susceptible to sybil attacks. Armies computer bots pretending to be humans viewing content.
Imbalance of power
Also the interests of business is outweighing and dictating the creative process. Anyone else notice how we're being subjected to more and more long-winded ad ridden videos?
dTube, the people's tube
However there are alternatives to Youtube that allow content creators to monetise their videos. Like dTube, that uses the Steem blockchain and stakeweighed voting to reward content creators with the STEEM cryptocurrency which they can trade for bitcoin and then their local currency. Or better will use STEEM to buy goods and pay for services.
Tokenisation
While social media sites like Youtube are trying to consolidate and centralise their power further, what they fail to realise is that cryptocurrencies are likely to decentralise power through the tokenisation of the internet.
Initiatives like Smart Media Tokens (SMTs) will enable (for example) YouTubers to create their own token to circulate around their community and exchange with others. The trick will be finding inventice ways to create value around these tokens however once that nut is cracked we will look back and laugh at days like today when corporations like Youtube dictated the terms on which we could create value for our creativr endeavours.
You can watch my vlog on this on Youtube
Or better still use the links below to watch on dTube!
▶️ DTube ▶️ IPFS
This is likely less to do with Logan Paul, and more to due with the previous adpocalypse issues that have occurred in the past year. Primarily due to advertisers complaining that their content was served next to controversial or offensive content in my opinion.
This is a direct way of drastically limiting the amount of content that they have to have a human manually review.
Unfortunately I am one of these small time Youtube content producers that will be effected.
He absolutely has done a fantastic job and I don't want to put down his efforts in any way, it's just if it is to grow, he needs help. Imagine if it gets to a tenth of Youtubes users and views? That will require some major maintenance and upgrades.
I will give it another go, because I do love having an alternative, and just trying to do what I was doing before and post on both until dtube becomes dominant! :-)
Good to see you rattling back around again :-)
Cg
Well, I mean his value would be decreased if people would flag his content, wouldn't it? So we could actively do something against people like him.
I am not familiar with the specifics, but isn't a "thumbs down" on youtube still an engagement from your community, thus helping you? I think on dtube it would be different!
At least that's how I understood it! Correct me if I am wrong, please :)
Dtube is a great idea, and has been making great strides, but they won't break through, unless some major performance issues take place, and some basic features (which youtube has) come to fruition.
Dtube runs terrible on any OS running Safari. Fails constantly, so unless you specifically open another browser to upload content, it's a pain. Also the performance is very lackluster; videos take forever to load, or don't load at all.
Another main feature holding Dtube back; lack of proper imbedding. You end up with a minnature thumbnail that people don't even know to click, and then it RE-DIRECTS. Most people don't want to leave the site in which they are browsing. A lack of functioning embedded player, I think, would be the first thing they come out with in the next update. Maybe they are doing this to cut down bandwidth cost.
I fully support Dtube, but it has a long way to go, and hopefully it gets there.
I'm glad you have thought about this more that a moment. I am of course in steem and wish to promote it as we all benefit from building our community.
That said dtube does have some massive competition, Google has the best infrastructure, as much as we love this software it needs to be run on someone's computers. While they have global distribution of deticated server facilities and engineering teams.
Steem has to also build these kinds of relationships between people in order to compete with the Salery's corporations can offer. I think D.tube would have to pay for servers. IPFS is awesome but it's not quite at the same scale as YouTube.
While their demonetization is going to drive their demise we still have so far to go, I hope to contribute to the network by purchaseingg computers and earning crypto to host services! Like a good that lays golden eggs! Though a considerable investment it could eventually provide enough to provide for yourself and others too!
I don't know or i don't have idea about Dtube and im so curious about this, because some people always comparing of what is the best YouTube or DTUBE, but when I've read and heard this video and content, i understand at all,
Therefore I've realize, that DTUBE is Better than Youtube,
So this kind of vlog will make me interested about Dtube than youtube,
Si thank you so much for sharing this kind of vlog mr. @nanzo-scoop and tooking for your upcoming vlogs, see you around and God bless, 😊👍
> or the 'privilege' of having crappy ads run on your content.
think you nailed it here. the only thing i will say is how it made me FEEL when i heard about it. i've been on youtube for ELEVEN years, i've got 660 followers and i've never been a youtuber. i earn maybe $6 on that platform but really with this last SCREW i'm in a position where if they remove what i get what's the point supporting that platform, even down to WATCHING content on it -- i've been asking people on twitter to help me get those last 340 people but it seems nuts to try to get them in 30 days when i did'nt get them in ELEVEN YEARS.
i realise that i'm not youtube specific interesting content enough to maybe warrant 1000 followers and that's what's most interesting to me is why use a metric of follower account, i don't remember any other social network doing this -- i think they have well and truly sunk themselves this time around! :)

@nanzo-scoop thanks again for another great video!
just a quick highlight for those who won't read the whole post.
"... we will look back and laugh at days like today when corporations like Youtube dictated the terms on which we could create value for our creative endeavours". Nanzo-scoop, Jan 2018.
Question is when? 1 year, 2, 3? otherwise said, how early is the steem community?
My opinion
I don't think that DTube will win the fight against YouTube because some music video hosting services and bigger content producers won't join Steemit / DTube. If they would join more user would join Steemit / DTube.
Not the new design nor the way YouTube deals with their producers is future-proof. At the same time Steemit has a good design and a future-proof concept. DTube would need some improvements and it would slay YouTube.
I hope more people will migrate to the Steemit network.
For a proper reward for our content producers!
Many of you are ahead of the crowd which is great, but don't look at YouTube or even Dtube as your main source of income.
You are playing a game of luck, hoping someone will watch your video and up-vote.
Instead build additional passive income streams. (there are so many)
Promote a product you believe in and think provides value to your audience.
Think like an entrepreneur create your own video course, eBooks, tshirts. There is so much opportunity right now, choose one and go for it.
Yeah, I feel like for 'right now' it's best to post to youtube then embed to a Steemit post, so you can potentially double dip on the monetisation, without paying the DTube author fee, but there'll ultimately be this tipping point where enough users are regularly hitting up DTube for more video content that it will be worthwhile just to post to that platform.
Definitely seems like the team behind Dtube are going to be able to tackle any challenges that could threaten their growth.
I'm sorry to drop this in a comment section of someone else's blog but steemit doesn't have an official chat. I'll keep this quick. I'm trying to increase the amount of humorous content on steemit. It is the most popular tag on reddit and most other social media. There is a small group of very funny people who post a lot of really quick original memes and gifs. I was rewarding them as much as I could. I lost my delegation and I'm looking to keep the project going. I do a daily post called "What's so funny?" including all of the funniest content I find that day. If you have any interest in helping this to grow, please check out my blog and see if it makes you laugh and if you'd like to see it continue. If you would, I could use some delegation to help encourage them to keep going and to find more authors.
I'm on steemit chat if you are interested in chatting.
If not, thank you for your time.
I agree. Yesterda,y I posted this elsewhere in social media:
The "YOU"
As YouTube caves in to the pressure of advertisers, I will probably cease producing educational videos for YouTube. IF I produce anything at all in the future - a BIG IF - it/they will be uploaded to Steemit [i.e. DTube] and other more "producer-friendly" platforms. I'm tired of YT moving the bar every few months; it is no longer worth the effort for the measly advertising pennies, so I'm moving to where I have a chance to be appreciated, and even make some money for my work. Hasta la vista, BooTube! 😎
FYI here is YouTube's latest announcement, how they "move the bar" for the third time this past year.
"YouTube Partner Program overview
"We'll be making updates to the YouTube Partner Program eligibility thresholds starting February 20, 2018. Channels will need to have 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1,000 subscribers to be reviewed to join the program. Get more details on the YouTube Creator Blog."
I no longer feel included in the "You" of "YouTube." (DO YOU?)
I really like the concept of Steemit and Dtube, and hope it continues to grow as a platform for creators. But I also have my concerns. For starters, the platform is wholeheartedly broken in terms of being a social platform. I've tried sharing posts from here on Google+, and Google returns an error stating its an invalid link, while sharing on Facebook I end up with a blank picture and link back to the root domain. So far, Twitter is the only platform I've seen that can actually accept links from here.
How do they expect to grow a social platform that cannot be promoted on major social networks? I have communities and brand pages on Google+ with over a half million members and followers, yet I can't promote anything here to my audiences on G+ because of this platform's broken URL's.
And what about video quality and thumbnails? The videos will only display at a max resolution of 480p. This is terrible quality by today's standards, and 480 is more inline with the video technologies of 2005 than it is for those of 2018. This whole platform is a social disaster waiting to happen. They need to get inline with the standards that drive the modern web, or they definitely will fail. The less accessible of a platform you have, the less of an audience you will be able to retain.
