Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

Hello, everyone.

I welcome you to my blog. Saw a post on a friend's status that says to be kind to people you cross paths with, for 9 out of every 10 people you meet are fighting battles you know nothing about, if not all 10 of them. A little kindness can actually go very far in giving them the courage to keep fighting or giving them the motivation they need to win whatever war it is that is going on in their head or life. Over the years I have come to realize that every action has a way of impacting those around us or those around when the action was carried out.

This impact can either be positive or negative; sometimes people can be handling the war in their heads perfectly until a friend or a family member says something that breaks them, and then they start losing the war and end up getting pushed to do what they would not have done if what was said to them was not said. Sometimes it is our action that breaks their spirit and forces them into things they have been holding back from. There are many people we are judging from afar, but I tell you that when you get close to them and hear how much they tried to hold back before they gave in, you will no longer be able to judge them as you are doing right now.

We humans have forced each other to keep things boxed up. In those days it was believed that a problem shared is already half solved; these days the story is different because a problem shared becomes the talk of the town and a topic for discussion. For that reason we have been forced to keep things to ourselves no matter how heavy they are. Those days, once you make the move to share what is bothering you, you get people giving you all the attention you need. Today, the moment you do that, they consider you weak, and then they badmouth you to the point you regret ever thinking about opening up.

Our generation needs to relearn sympathy and empathy; we lack all of that, which is why we have the highest rate of suicide compared to the generation before us, because they helped each other, they gave listening ears to those who opened up without judging them, and they convinced those who tried to keep things boxed up to open up. Our generation is the opposite of all that, we shut those who try to open up and mock those who open up.

You are correct. People are less concerned about the welfare of each other these days than before. But this is a clarion call for us to return to that place of empathy and sympathy for one another. That way, we will make society and the global village a better place.

Well, there's some truth to what you say, that there are spaces of intolerance and misunderstanding; we see it on the street and on social media like X. But we also have this space to talk about it with people who might be more understanding, and I've even seen many deep conversations in the comments on YouTube music videos, with people talking about how a song reminds them of a deceased loved one or a broken relationship with strangers. And these people show more empathy and solidarity than those closest to you. And that tells us something about current human relationships: sometimes it's easier for us to be honest anonymously with other anonymous people than to be honest publicly, because there's fear, censorship, or rejection.
