When Time Paused

Promised sun, but yesterday haze
settled over the village,
obscuring hills and rooftops,
as if time itself had paused.

In the silence of the day,
a clattering of jackdaws
garrisoned the nearby ash,
a militia cloaked in charcoal and grey.

Suddenly - startled by a shadow -
they collectively took flight,
like pencil smudges
against the muted sky.
