Let us go back in time.
Once upon a time, the human being evolved over time. Let us not go into the religious theories at present. That will only create more controversies.
I am a Hindu and so I have been taught about Gods and how the first man 'Manu' was created and so on. The Christians have Adam and Eve and I am not sure what other religions teach.
So, back to your question.
The human was first a cave man during the stone age. He settled down, in societies shortly after, discovered fire and so on.
Man was always awed by the force of nature. So, he began to worship nature. The sun, moon, trees and even animals were worshiped.
As time passed by, human settlements began to have tribal leaders. These leaders discovered that man was also afraid of nature and the gods whom they worshiped. So, in order to control the wild nature of man, religion was used as a weapon to control masses.
Major religions took shape after the arrival of prophets. There were numerous trials and punishments but the priests finally gained control and thus defined rules which were used to prevent straying.
Sometimes I think religious leaders have gone beyond control and people have lost sight of the actual principles behind every religion. That is however just my opinion only.
It would be better if people realize that the message behind each religion is pure love and not hate.
LOVE IS GOD

We dont really know what is going on, we are a bunch of talking monkeys clinging to a huge rock, spinning around a burning ball of gas which will someday die killing us all with it. We are hurtling through space with no idea where we are going, what we are doing or what our purpose is beyond existing...

There is a magical being who made us and loves us, HE knows everything and we have to trust him and his mysterious ways... dont worry about all those the things you dont know or understand.... leave it to god/s, just go about your day....
The hooman condition is a strange beast to wrangle at times, we like to think we know everything, but we dont.... but not knowing things makes us feel fear and anxiety. it can be so invasive that it stops us from doing things we need to in day to day life.
Having a "maker" or a "god" puts minds at ease and lets us not concern ourselves with these unanswerable questions... have you ever heard the saying "god works in mysterious ways " ? it is usually used as a means of justifying negative actions which happen in life
Example:
Question
"Why would god let so many innocent kids die in war? "
Answer
"God works in mysterious ways" OR "Its all part of gods plan"
How about when good things happen i hear you ask... well there is an answer for that too and that is "That it is gods will". So you can see there is always an answer that makes god "look good" and shut people up to stop them thinking about it further.... "just trust in god".
what i believe is that essentially, mankind has been treated like a child asking about where babies come from. Its a hard conversation to have and instead of being honest we made up a story... like the stork bringing babies

problem is once we start making up these kinds of stories we need to make up more when follow up questions arise...
that is not to say that there is no "god" of any sort.... i just think that if there is a god that it is not what any of the religions have described.
