Being the firstborn in a Nigerian household can come with a lot of responsibilities and expectations. Growing up I hardly have any fun cause I always feel like I shouldn’t do this, I shouldn’t do that, I didn’t even see myself as a kid.
my mom is a very disciplined woman growing up even though she is now soft, people wouldn’t even believe if I tell them how disciplined she was. I remember I have to be an adult kid, I had to grow up faster and take on a more mature role, obey the rules cause it is believed my younger ones will copy my act even at a young age. It's completely normal to sometimes wish to not be a first born sometimes. I wish it every time 😂

when it comes to being a firstborn in a Nigerian household, it can feel like you've got the weight of the world on your shoulders, the wish and want to want to start taking care of your parents already, that feeling of looking like you are the poster everyone outside the family looks at.

Here are a few way I try to keep myself calm and also navigate the responsibilities while still finding time for myself
1. I talk to my parents about my feelings and concerns and the good part of talking to them is that they realize the pressure I am feeling, and communicating help them understand my perspective.
-
I always strike a balance between my responsibilities and my well-being. I Make sure to set aside some time for myself to relax, have fun, and pursue my interests.
-
I always Seek support, I reach reach out to my sibling, friends, and the good part is that they are always ready to support. I always Share my thoughts and experiences which helps me provide a sense of support and understanding.
