Desfrán – Day 51

The cannabis plants are now in the ground outside. Its been a rough week for them, one did not make it. But the other three I am happy to say are doing well and seem to be adjusting. I am afraid handling the roots made this strain quite upset. And I am rethinking how I will be transplanting cannabis plants in the future to minimize stress and loses. Next spring when I do this again, I will use some plant-able pots. Those kind that break down in the soil. That way I do not disturb the roots of these young plants and stress them from transplanting as much. I direct sowed another seed, so I hope it comes up. Otherwise I may need to start another seed inside once I get the special pots I need.

Here is what they looked like the first day planted... So sad..

https://i.postimg.cc/tJJjPvmn/20260504-103546.jpg

One of them was not too bad, but all kind of slouched over.

https://i.postimg.cc/PJJjZVF1/20260504-103554.jpg

It does happen on many strains I have planted outside. But my first loss on transplanting. So I really want to plan for next time to do it better.

While I was checking on my plants, I found a big rat snake! Its probably a good six feet long. Good to have them around, eating many mice.

https://i.postimg.cc/J00LJYdZ/20260510-110800.jpg

A few days later, they are coming back nicely.

https://i.postimg.cc/D0NKcQtL/20260510-110811.jpg

The bottom leaves will hopefully die back and the top canopy will get bigger.

https://i.postimg.cc/D0NKcQtP/20260510-110815.jpg

I placed wood chips around the base of the plant, to help lock in moisture and increase their carbon to nitrogen ratio.

https://i.postimg.cc/J0FWQ39x/20260510-110822.jpg

Hopefully they like they new homes.

https://i.postimg.cc/Fz6Qxb2P/20260510-110825.jpg

Now they will grow for many months, probably at least three months before they start flowering.

https://i.postimg.cc/nrWt1K65/20260510-110832.jpg

And since these plants have a head start, I really hope they do well and get quite big by end of summer.

Besides their transplanting stress. They had one near freezing morning to deal with, it got down 32F for about an hour. But luckily they handled it well and seemed to have recovered.

Soon days in the 30s will be over until the autumn.

I think I am not going to top these and see how big they get. Let them grow to their natural full shape and size and see what I get. So for now I will give them good waterings when the rain does not come through. And start feeding them in about a week after they fully adjust to their new homes. And eventually if all goes well they should get quite big. I still have support posts on all four sides so I could string them up if need be. But hopefully they will grow big and strong and not need any additional support. But in the case they do, I can build it out.

For fifty one days those plants look rather small... Is the rat snake poisonous to humans?

@mrdani12 | May 11, 2026, 5:21 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

no rat snakes are non-venomous, but Snake is snake, personally I am afraid of snakes 😂..

I agree. Probably due to me not pulling all the roots out of the pots from the previous grows. Found a bunch when I transplanted them.

Yep that's right they are not venomous. Quite safe to be around.

That thing looks like it probably ate a whole family of mice! The weather has been so crazy. With all of the frost/freeze warnings it is hard to get anything started outside. I finally de-winterized our travel trailer the other day, but I'm hoping things stay warmer at night now.

Hah sure is big.

Yeah we keep getting cold snaps way past what I am used to.

Hopefully freezing days are over now.

Yes, I found that snake at my home many times, they are non-venomous, don't try to kill them but still safety is important..... I think the plant will take years to grow.

They are great to have around to keep the mouse population down that is for sure.

Gotta love the excitement when you put them in.

I was going to give you a tip, but almost in the same sentence you had already figured out the stress issue in your plant’s roots. Besides pots, there are biodegradable bags that can be placed directly into the soil. I don’t know if you’re talking about exactly those kinds of bags, but that’s it, they help a lot. And wow, it’s the first time I’ve heard about that snake. Around here, rattlesnakes are very common, but since winter is coming, they don’t show up as much.

@solominer | May 12, 2026, 2:41 p.m. | Votes: 15 | [ VOTE ]

Yep those sound like it. I think they should address the root issue for sure when it comes to transplanting them.

Ah we have rattlesnakes too. Got to be a little more careful around them.

Transplant shock is always rough on plants, too bad one of your plants didn't survive. But I'm glad the other three are doing well! Hopefully, the cold will stay away and they will really take off quickly.

Rat snakes are great to have around eating up those rodents. After all, if there aren't many rodents around they won't attract rattlesnakes which you don't want anywhere near your property!

Ah thanks. Yeah the transplant period is indeed hard on those little plants.

Well hopefully the rat snake keeps them at bay. Rather have him than rattlers.. lol
