I'm not trying to spread fake news. I would like for Steemit Inc to at least make an effort to keep people from getting frustrated and giving up before they have had a chance to try STEEM.

We have no information about the previous spikes. For all we know, those spikes were from a backlog that is now empty.

I believe Steemit Inc provides notifications that accounts have been approved/verified by email or text. It seems like they should send out a message to those in the queue that they have stopped creating accounts and provide a list of other account creation options. The free account option on the website should be taken down.

On the other hand, people who don't know better are left waiting for an unknown amount of time which doesn't provide a good experience. Yes, I agree. And while we're at it, the entire FAQ (and the rest of the site) is about 2 years out-of-date. None of the info given to new users is current or correct.

This seems like you are guessing.

I guess @socky's point is steemit has never newly approved since a month ago, which is quite unusual (maybe for the first time this year? not sure though). Anyway, it's not like steemit approves everyday, they only approve every 2-3 weeks, which is clearly shown as big spikes. That's why some people got their account within a day if they're lucky to apply near the next approval day. I guess currently steemit doesn't wanna (or cannot) spend money for verification temporarily.

It was explained to me once that the reason why they don't just allow all the accounts is because the Steem developers and witnesses are afraid of "Sybil Attacks", which is basically when someone gets a bunch of different accounts to abuse (they pretend like they're a bunch of different people to be more influential, or to be able to vote more for themselves).

But honestly, I think they should be more afraid of the paid-vote bots. The paid voting system makes it nearly impossible for new users to grow. IMHO the Steem devs and witnesses should seriously re-examine their priorities.

When I told them that, they basically said they didn't care about my concerns because other people had invested more into Steem than I did, and those people's opinions were more valuable to the SteemIt leadership than mine were.

It's like they don't care if Steem goes down in flames as long as they get their short-term kickbacks.

Those existed when they were more actively creating accounts too, it has been a common problem for so long.. :(

@acidyo - there used to be about 5000 people getting through the each 2 weeks or so. Now there are 20 a day or so through steem. This means maybe 300 in the same 2 weeks.

Therefore, somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15K people have applied but are not processed in the last month.

But already the push through rate was falling off in the last months, so there are probably even more unprocessed applications than that.

Why has the number dropped off so hard?

The assumption is that the person who used to do this every two weeks was fired.

Who at steem(it) is approving the 20 entries per day and do they need some help?

• There are steemians who would volunteer to help so the new people can get in.

• We have others who are delegating sp to new people so they can work around the rc problem when they get here. (@thedarkhorse @crypto.piotr are two who come to mind.) I am sure others would step in if more people got approved.

• A possible alternative would be to partially farm out the sign ups to the other dapps that are already approving new members and let them get the manpower. This is from a couple of days ago and steemhunt is usually here too.

I have gotten about 20 sign ups since June 2017 - all personal friends and content creators. It used to take a few days through steemit. The last one was in October 2018 and it took about 10 days for her to get approved. Before that, in about July, 2018 it took 3 weeks for another friend to get in. I have no idea of the backlog but typically people just go away and don't return - so the backlog fades into nothing after not so long. It is likely that a missing bi-weekly peak on that graph means there are 1000s of accounts waiting in the queue. I have yet to hear of what checks are being done to justify such a waiting period, but I personally doubt that such a period is really needed and I also doubt that the checks are particularly reliable.

Anyone wanting to improve the situation can check out @steempassport and offer support to create the various systems that will resolve these issues once and for all.

I looked and your @steempassport idea is wonderful. But people who are here new are also dropping off the cliff. There are maybe 6000 here if this state of the daaps thing is correct and the numbers are mainly dropping. So how long can we survive with no new people? We had about 60K people last year at this time and I know that was all about the price, but still.

I don't know where state of the dapps gets it's user figures from but my site steemocean.com shows around 55000 active voters over a 5 day period.

most are those are not active users @ura-soul but they are trailvoters who left accounts on active trails. we have many many of these on our trail, no way to remove them either.

I'd be surprised if 50,000 of them were all just autovoting accounts!

@penguinpablo's post from today shows that there are about 50000 posts being made per day currently. I doubt that the average number of posts made by an account is 10 per day. Maybe someone has 3rd party data to show exactly how many accounts are actively posting.. I just looked through a bunch of different apps from steemprojects and couldn't find that relatively simple data.

Yeah it's not easy to determine humans vs bots. You could do it by hand but it would take many hours.

The Sincerity machine learning system produces a spam rating for all accounts, so it could be done via that - but I've never seen it done yet.

FYI, I just ran queries in SteemSQL and got the following data across the whole of Steem when searching for unique accounts that have made comments:

Last 24 hours = 7988
Last week = 17657
Last month = 35546

So that's in the same ballpark as the state of the Dapps data - but not the same.

@therealwolf's website https://steemapps.com actually uses SteemSQL as its database as he explains in his post: https://steemit.com/steem/@therealwolf/alpha-steemapps-com-the-frontpage-for-apps-on-steem
Hence that's why you have very similar numbers.
Then https://www.stateofthedapps.com/ is getting the data from his website.
@therealwof also mentioned that the user counts on the apps are so low as you can only tell which app the user used for a post or comment, but not which one he did to vote with. So the activity should obviously be higher.

Hey and machine learning could definitely be used to filter out posts by bots, but one first needs to program a software to analyze the blockchain and then also train the model with manual data sets. That's going to take some time...

I just mailed state of the dapps and they said they get their data from the real wolf's app. I think the issue is that the data on that site is specifically targeting users on steemit.com as opposed to considering all steem traffic together. However, it's pretty clear that the data is not accurate, since some of the dapps for steem are listed as having very few - such as 20 for steeve. I'm pretty sure steeve has more than 20 users.

There is a backlog. I have friends that signed up about a month ago and they still haven't received their free accounts yet.

@acidyo and @inertia It was me that first brought this all to light and I am not spreading fake news, i'm trying to be proactive and have action taken by raising it as a red flag before it does become a problem.

Since the lay offs the accounts created by steemit inc has dropped considerably. Its not that long ago so before it becomes as problem, don't you think we should try and address it? From the post I did on it the other day, which is not fake news as I pulled the data myself, the comments suggest this is a serious problem and people are waiting too long and losing interest.

With the drop in crypto prices, im sure there has been a drop in demand, however looking at the % accounts created by steemit inc, it was over 80% in Oct and Nov. its no where near that now. working back from these figure I would guesstimate a backlog of about 1100 accounts.

This has been noticed very fast, and we have an opportunity to make sure it does not become a problem. I think removing the sign up for free is not a bad idea. Lets not give potential new users or investors the wrong impression and leave them wondering why they haven't got their accounts, lets be proactive, and hopefully we can also help reduce the pressure from steemit inc so they can focus on what they need to do.

I would love to see other dapps take charge on setting up free accounts, but we would need steem.com to link to these and its a big undertaking too for the apps.

I don't really care. You sign up for a free account, you get what you pay for. Dapps are taking charge, they just aren't doing it for free. Apparently doing so is unsustainable and problematic.

I will not get worked up over free account creation. There's a lot of talk in the dapps community over the idea of creating free off-chain accounts and only putting them on-chain once they prove their worth. I like that idea much more.

As for the button, yeah, it'd be nice if it was removed or was changed to "Free, with Unspecified Delay." But why now? Because of missing spikes on some report? We don't even know what those spikes really were.

As if half of the world would be waiting to join Steem(it). Most of the potential new users must be convinced first to join. Often I say: "Why not just try it out as it is for free anyway?" Most of the users I brought to Steem(it) wouldn't have joined if the first thing they had to do is to pay for an account.

I agree with you, I have a difficult time getting friends to try Steemit. I have one friend that is a very active poster on Facebook, I have tried several times to just get Her to give Steemit a try. She would add so much with her posting! Put a cost on accounts and limit her ability to interact with limited RC she would just laugh at Steemit. We need to give the people what they want, a social platform that welcomes people not a good old boys club that closes the door to new people!

I have to admit, I agree with this.

However, personally, I do care. I feel that some of these paid account creation options only allow cryptocurrency as payment. For many, the STEEM is a gateway for those that don't know anything about cryptocurrency to eventually becoming a cryptocurrency user. Without the free account option, we shut down this gateway for people to learn or even people that only want to uses STEEM purely for the social media aspect.

The off-chain account creation concept may very well be a good alternative solution.

At the moment it seems it is having the least amount of trouble with the API too. On Busy, I am getting a lot of weird.

steempeak is great; have been using ot for the last 2 months.

Esteem Surfer, Steempeak, Steeve, Partiko, 1ramp, etc.. these at least are the word based steem dapps.. there are more like Dtube, Dsound, Steemhunt, Musing etc that uses Steem as a metadatabase, that'll give you a different experience.

Look at least they are trying, I appreciated the sentiment, most companies that care wish their customers a happy holidays.

I am not a staff member of Steemit or anything similar, but the payout is declined on this blog post. And as I see, the payout is declined under every post of @steemitblog.
So what are they taking here? Why are you talking about "exit"?

How? There are no ads, no revenue being created off of the users using Steemit.com daily. Not only do you (and most of us) get the account created for free, you're also surfing the blockchain and hosting images for free. They aren't packaging your activity and selling it to the highest bidders like most other social media platforms do, cause it's there for free to grab on the blockchain.

Sure you can say "their stake would not be worth as much if the users weren't here" but that brings in a lot of other factors.

Again, I'm not one to try and silence when users of a site want to complain about things, but his tone sounded a lot more like an idiot acting out on being mad cause things weren't delivered in time and it may have effected the value of his investment.

Please stop trying to silence people's opinion of other people's "opinions" because you disagree with me disagreeing with theirs.

They're complaining because they love the site, see its potential, and want things to improve.
You coming along trying to claim people have no right to complain about Steemit's problems is nasty. They have every right, and Steemit's ownership would be wise to ignore you, and hear the complaints.

Have you tried to use other dapps instead of Steemit.com? On @partiko, @esteem-app Surfer, @steempeak etc. you wont see non-sense like this pinned.

IMO it's better than complaining about something you dont want to see anyway. It's not like Steemit.com has the best User Experience too.

Steem is a decentralized blockchain and no one should have the authority to pin posts and have any kind of advantage.

steemit.com however is a centralized interface, and they can do whatever suite them, and i for one kinda neutral about this, i don't like it neither dislike it, but if you don't like it, you can use another interface.

its their company ... steemit is not the blockchain , you are posting and reading on the application maintained by steemit.inc , they have every right in the world to pin whatever they like on top or bottom . If i were to complain about anything its why they're not lobbying for ad-money but i can think of a reason b/c i have the same problem : independence, they dont wanna leash themselves to having to explain yearly to the board.
