My very good friend had a successful buy, trade, & sell magazine in the 90's in fact it still runs to this day. It is called the Smart Shopper Magazine! And you can place anything you want to sell in the magazine for free! How you ask? Advertisers run ads in there and by which the Smart Shopper can afford to run the service of selling your items for free to the consumers. In addition to that revenue is also gained by the selling of the magazine in convenience stores all over much of Ontario Canada, as well as online subscriptions. My friend has done very well with his business. Since he has moved it online with the age of the internet as well.. and the business thrives on this business model even to this day nearly 30 years since it began! I was there for the entire start up process and helped get the ball rolling.
So you see Ads can sustain a business and really benefit consumers of that business as well. This has been done for literally decades upon decades and is a proven business model.
I think fine tuning the specifics as you mentioned to suit both the entrepreneur as well as the consumer will really make things pleasant for both parties. Customer/consumer satisfaction should always be number one. Which is an asset to any successful business model!
I think perhaps with this current test phase they are crunching the numbers and watching our reaction. The good news is with @Steemit @Ned I really believe they listen to us. I for one am thrilled for the ads but I want you to be sure to hear our voices and think of us when you make these decisions. This will help guide the business model into one that will be successful on a global scale.
The bottom line is Ads bring in massive revenue. So long as the users of the platform have a say in the 'type' of ads running on their content (I actually saw a dating site that looked like an escort service on the bottom of my most recent page today <-- not cool). And as long as the revenue from the ads is allocated appropriately between the platform and its users which will be a must for this to be well received. Then I think the idea of bringing in more revenue can be an absolute asset to the survival of both the platform and more importantly, it's users!

Looking forward to the future on Steemit!
The proof is in the numbers. If Steemit does not have the money to sustain it stops existing and we have no longer have a wonderful platform. Likewise if Steemit has the funds to carry forward naturally we have our Steemit.. and hopefully they share that ad revenue with the creators similar to YouTube's creators benefiting from ads. Are you listening @Ned? Mama Kawaii has a few years on ya Ned and she knows her stuff! Now I love your hair, and I love Steemit! So you have won me over already. But please make sure to allocate the funds appropriately as Mama Kawaii can hear concern in the crowd.

Ultimately the proof is in the numbers. If this doesn't get you guys excited there is something seriously wrong.

If we want to compete with the big dogs we have to run like a big dog. We can't run a whole company on .20 cent USD shares of Steem. Meanwhile YouTube on the other side of the fence is raking in $17.59 BILLION DOLLARS USD!!!
You guys should be flipping excited.. I can't figure out what all the complaining is about. If $17.59 Billion USD doesn't get your adrenaline pumping than there is no hope for you lol

Bring on the Tide and lets start paying these utilities on time! Mama Kawaii's roots are showing and she needs a dye job! lmao
