Solar Report: May 2026

Here is my monthly report on how our solar panel system did in May 2026. We have:
* 20x400W panels = 8kW, facing west
* 5kW GivEnergy inverter
* 9.5kWh GivEnergy battery

The house is in the UK at about 52° north. The system was installed in February 2024. The system was installed by Octopus who also supply our power and gas.

This is the year so far, all in kWh:

Month Generated Used Exported Imported Cost import Paid export January 110 518 106 522 £88.53 £14.91 February 237 592 226 580 £79.08 £33.97 March 590 484 599 507 £74.47 £68.30 April 937 283 927 326 £37.71 £112.71 May 1001 315 950 312 £45.14 £113.99

2025 figures here.

We generated over 1MWh last month, just. According to the inverted we exported a little more than that, but I have taken the export and import numbers from the Octopus site as that determines the finances. We generated slightly more than May last year, but then it has been really sunny with some record temperatures in the UK. I know temperature can affect the panel efficiency, but the inverter was operating at full capacity a lot of the time.

You can see how sunny it was at the end of the month. June has started cooler and overcast, so may be less productive. We should still export enough to cover all our energy costs, including the gas for cooking and hot water. We do not have air conditioning and that would change the numbers a lot. I think you really have to look at solar if you go for that to keep the running costs down.

As I reported last month GivEnergy got into financial difficulty and the hardware business for batteries and inverters may be gone for good. The software division who provide the app and web access is separate, but were introducing a £5 per month subscription to get full access. I was prepared to pay that, but then I heard about Axle Grid Services who had an offer to pay the subscription if you joined their service. As I understand it they are a virtual power service who use batteries like mine to supply the grid at certain times. They pay far more than Octopus, but it may only be for a few hours each month. However, they guarantee you £10 each month. There is also a sign-up bonus, so overall I stand to get a fair bit each year to help pay off my system. I can still stay with Octopus as before. They do have their own smart tariff that pays you more depending on demand, but my system will not work with that. You cannot use the Octopus Intelligent Go tariff and Axle.

Some of the links above are referrals that pay me something, but you can earn from them too. I will also mention YouFibre who provide my internet. I saved a lot by moving to them from Virgin. If you sign up to them and use my referral code EUEFCA then we both get £100.

I suspect that energy costs will keep rising, but solar prices have come down in recent years to make it a more attractive option. If I can do this well in the 'gloomy UK', then I expect others in sunnier climes can do even better. I have see from others on Hive that the power providers in some countries offer less favourable terms though.

Shine on!

I think this breakdown would be a useful reference for others considering solar energy solutions.

Well it's specific to my system and the conditions here. I am just showing what is possible. Follow others in this community to see how it can vary.

Well-articulated report; the future belongs solar, especially, for low and medium size load. But will the cabal behind fossil fuels production give solar a chance? Planet earth is better off with solar than fossil fuels

'cabal'? The industry have politicians in their pockets, but people will go with what saves them money.

Looks like you are getting into peak season now!

May to August is peak. but we get a big variation over the year as you can see. We are further north than you.

That always blows me away that you are so much further North.

Interesting report. Anything special to generate more energy the past months?

@steevc | June 2, 2026, 8:09 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

It's called summer :) We are quite far north so it will vary over the seasons. What we can control is how the battery is used and when we export power.

I've just come back after a year's break from the blockchain, and it's good to see that you are still very active.

It's good to see that you are generating more than you've used. I thought that south-facing panels were the optimal direction, but your figures show that isn't necessary.

@steevc | June 2, 2026, 9:02 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Welcome back! I am still having fun on Hive even though these are tough times in crypto. I find plenty of interest here.

South-facing would be better, but we had to go with what we could do on our roof. I think the panels have got better at using ambient light so it does not have to be direct. Our panels can generate more than the inverter can use so it is working at full capacity for longer. I am showing that a non-optimal setup here in the 'frozen north' can still be productive.

We just got panels and a battery system installed. Australia and especially Queensland is well suited for it but the pay back to cost always had me worried previously. Luckily for me an old apprentice of mine started his own solar business and offered me a deal I could not refuse. He even let me help with the install to reduce costs. We ended up with 12kw of panels, 10kw invertor and a 55kw battery system. I am now studying the AlphaEss app trying to work out the production I am getting and possible feedins options and which wholesaler might be best. Some of the electrical companies out here are offering some attractive numbers except I have to sign off control of the battery remotely to them.

That's a hefty system and should be productive where you are. Will it be powering a/c? I hope you can get a good deal for feed-in. Octopus are pretty good here and this extra Axle scheme will help too. Giving the supplier control could be worth it if they pay you well.

Do many people have solar there? It's common here and the new houses they are build near us mostly have some panels. I would say they could fit more and I don't know if they install a battery as well. Our battery makes a big difference as we can exploit the cheap rate power.

We only have a small main bedroom a/c at the moment. For 30 years we have got by in the heat and humidity with just fans. But as I get older the heat is getting hard to put up with. This winter I am organising a ducted air con for the whole house ready for next summer, which should give the solar system a good workout.

If it keeps getting warmer here we may need one for the bedroom at least. You need decent sleep.

Yes there is a lot of solar out here and they recon our grid is struggling with it. Lots of people got on early with a good gov rebate and feed in rates. Now for just panels there is nothing. We now have a gov battery rebate system. I was able to get in just before they capped it to a 15kw battery max.
