Steemit is a Test

I've been on Steemit for over a year. There have been few days when I have not been on Steemit since June 8, 2016. I am a Steem addict, and like many addicts, I even tried to quit, and find something else. It didn't work. It's too captivating, and holds too much potential.

Steemit is a test.

It's a test, a mirror, a petri dish for our minds. You may not be able to see this yet, but if you stay here, you will.

Every day each of us struggles with something. At first, when you get it in here, you struggle with trying to get people to give you money. Your mind is focused each day on that mission. And each day, your worth begins to be measured in numbers underneath your post. If you have $0, you feel horrible. So, your fear kicks in. You start making plans, or building bots.

If your mind is in this stage 1 phase, you will not understand stage 2. But if you have a mind that exists on the periphery, or if you have been struggling for a long time in life, you might begin to see the outlines of stage 2, on your own.

So, what is stage 2 exactly?

Stage 2 is a survival mindset that is hyper-focused on other things besides the money ticker. The people who get to stage 2 quickly know the following things:

  1. Money exists in the minds of people.
  2. People make decisions where to put their money based more on social and emotional reasons than purely intellectual reasons.
  3. Social bonds between people determine to a large extent where money goes.
  4. Humans are emotional, irrational and are in need of feeling a certain way.
  5. Each person who is capable of giving wealth to others is a unique person with unique tastes.
  6. Many whales and dolphins still do not get their own intellectual and reading needs met.
  7. Humans will feed their own children before the children of others.
  8. Humans evolved from tribes, and I believe we are headed into a digital tribe era.

Can you see something here?

When I go idea shopping on Steemit, I am searching for future tribe members. I am looking for people who are kind of hanging around in the shadows, who are real, and who have the authenticity trait. I'm searching for people who can form a shield, in order to advance society into the next phase of existence.

What Steemit newbies need to realize:

Steemit is made up of social fabric. This is not really a commodity culture where the best idea wins. Those Steemians who focus their efforts equally on building social bonds plus thinking in deep ways about things that affect tons of people are the ones who do well on here. It's getting harder by the day to stand out. Early adopters even are struggling to stand out due the massive influx of users. That's why it's important to realize one thing:

You and I, and everyone one here are part of the future.

If you're reading this now, you're among the earliest adopters of new technology, freedom and new thoughts. We are inside a decentralized autonomous organization and it's up to us to make it either the fantastic future or the spam pit of doom. I suspect the people operating the vast 5,500+ account botnet (currently draining the reward pool) are not fit for society. It is too bad they are not putting their amazing botnet-building skills to better use, becoming a part of this unique and wonderful place, a place where we have a chance to build a futuristic world together.

Instead, they have decided to weaken this system, their stupidity, arrogance and ignorance decided to rule their minds. Every organism has its cancer, and the botnets are ours. People wonder what the future will be like....all they have to do is join Steemit. We all have to get this idea out of our heads:

> "It's up to Steemit, Inc. to fix everything"

We are so accustomed to a centralized control structure, that it forms our every thought wave. Even I had this trouble last year. I was mad about Steemit Inc.'s decisions, as I considered my solutions to be superior. It hit me a few months ago, that this kind of thinking is flawed. I have to step up, to take more action, and not rely on any central authority to make the right decisions. In short, I decided that in order for my reality to change, I have to do everything in my power to make things at least better than they were before me.

You see, for once in our lives, we all have been given an opportunity to change things. We have been given free tools, in the form of a digital wallet with zero transaction fees. I can send money to Africa in seconds. We need to remind ourselves of how incredible this is. I forget, and like a dumb human, I take it for granted.

Only in times of illness can we see how amazing it is to breathe normally, to be able to walk, to talk and to think clearly.

It's human nature to begin to take things for granted and abuse what is given to us for free. I see Steemit attracting people who don't care for the inventions, for the possibility that Steemit could change the world. I see scammers, beggars, and spammers. I see people who are very desperate for money.

I need to talk to these people because they are in fact, degrading everything we have built here. This degradation is in fact a mirror of the world, and how it is right now. The world is not a good state, and as more and more people come into Steemit, our little place we've toiled day and night to create, it will continue to be degraded unless we all stop what we're doing and wake up.

After thinking last night about the botnets that have appeared in here, it became obvious that this stuff will actually continue, and we all will need to become more vigilant. I would say that @personz is doing a fantastic job, and also @patrice and @sherlockholmes and all the people working behind the scenes to mitigate the damage. @sadkitten, the little AI kitten has been working tirelessly, combatting the fraudulent, spam comments. These people are doing a service to us. Without @patrice for example, this place would be terribly ugly with spam and fraud.

The botnets are way more of an issue that the human "follow 4 follow" desperation. Because if the botnets are funded, or gain some huge SP, they will be harder to control. So @personz is doing the right thing by attacking this problem before it gets out of hand....I think it has become out of control recently, as I started looking into the matter yesterday.

What can we do?

We can wake up our minds to the reality that we can make this thing work and not starve to death anymore.
We can support @spaminator and take more actions ourselves. If you notice something super fishy, you can report it to @sherlockholmes in Steemit Chat. There is an action group forming to get this spam under control, and it will be run by the @spaminator account. More coming soon on this development. If you want to take an active role in reducing the amount of spam on Steemit, comment below.

I want to clarify, I am not talking about content moderation, but clear abuse of Steemit like: written or image plagiarism, identity theft, comment upvote botnets, any kind of automated botnet activity that is created to drain rewards.....

Carry on,
Stellabelle

"a petri dish for our minds", thats a pretty good line and great observation. Great advice here in general, especially the stuff on stage 2.

Do you think that Steemit has the ability to draw mainstream away from other places like instagram and facebook?

@bryner | Aug. 14, 2017, 3:18 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I think it already is. We already have some people who only post a link on Facebook, that directs to their Steemit article.

@cryptostache | Aug. 14, 2017, 4:10 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Yeah I do this quite often and have been trying to entice friends to atleast check out Steemit.

@bryner | Aug. 14, 2017, 10:50 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

It still takes people some time to wrap their heads around cryptocurrency , so if you word it as they can monetize their blogging/comments/articles, that helps. If they are trusting in you, they could blog, and you could help them extract the value out of it(you be the banker until they understand the concepts).

@bucho | Aug. 14, 2017, 3:27 p.m. | Votes: 3 | [ VOTE ]

i've seen so many articles about "will steemit replace such and such website..."?

that answer is: pretty unlikely. each of the sites mentioned provides a different user experience for the people that use them. Steemit is only going to appeal to people who want to actively engage. FB is not necessarily an active engagement type platform the same way Steemit is, and the financial benefit (to say nothing of the concept of cryptocurrency) is still too confusing a concept for a lot of your every day, typical internet users or social media platform users.

and really, what would be the purpose of hoping other platforms are used less (a concept others have floated, not you specifically, @cryptostache) and use Steemit more? each platform gives the users a unique experience that they either enjoy or don't. if the platform doesn't change, people move on to another that does.

will there be a mass migration of the mainstream to Steemit? unless Facebook or Twitter completely shut down for whatever reason, i seriously doubt it. i like Steemit, but I'm still very much using both my FB and IG accounts as much as i was before.

@erickpinos | Aug. 14, 2017, 3:53 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Steemit may remain niche but the Steem blockchain is unprecedented in social media as anyone can develop new social media apps for different purposes all with a shared dataset. Just look at all the Twitter and Instagram clones you can log into with your Steemit info. Much more casual posting and commenting on there, which shows that Steem can be suited for FB / Twitter style posting than Steemit's more Medium / Reddit like interface.

Of course, those are clones and are thus unlikely to be adopted unless they become easier to use and undergo swift strong network effects. It's hard to wrap my mind around it but I also think Steemit will enable new forms of social networks we haven't thought of yet.

@bucho | Aug. 14, 2017, 4:10 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

oh i don't doubt that it will spark some off-shoots, but i have my doubts about it becoming a more mainstream application for most people.

then again, i've been wrong before. i looked at twitter when it first came about and thought (as a writer)...."140 characters? who the fuck would use that limitation? STUPID."

yeah...it was stupid. a stupid response, anyway. :P

I thought the same about Snapchat:

"Check out this cool new app called Snapchat!"

"What does it do?"

"You can send pictures to your friends!"

"You mean like I do already with text message? Lol"

BRUH....seriously. my exact reaction too. used it for a little bit and said "nope. this is lame."

but for whatever reason, people eat it up. i must be old or out of touch. i got nothin.

@cryptostache | Aug. 14, 2017, 4:10 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Yeah you make a good point, they do all provide something different, but mass exodus of social media platforms for something new and shiny are not anything new and seem to happen more and more these days.

I wasn't necessary saying completely abandon those platforms, but just be able to draw a mainstream crowd in the same way that isn't early adopters and tech/crypto people.

@bucho | Aug. 14, 2017, 4:13 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

no no, sorry. i knew that's not what you were saying, i simply wanted to point out that others had said that as the topic kind of circled the same area.

it'll be interesting to see how it appeals to the more standard internet user. at the moment, the people i know personally who have gotten into it are less about the crypto aspect and more about the content aspect, which doesn't surprise me considering who they are. but i think with the continued insertion of ads throughout other platforms, this ad-free idea is something people will certainly be more interested in overall for sure.

I'm worried particularly about the botnet part you mentioned. I'm new here, but I guess Steemit wasn't meant to be like this... full of bots instead of real people. It's a real concern.

I'm not to worried since every major social media platform has faced spam issues as threatening to the community as this one. But it is up to all of us to help stop it.

As a person new to Steemit, I thank you. I am still wading through to find real content, even if it isn't a topic that I might immediately gravitate towards. I can see how the "bots" could be very troublesome for a variety of reasons. For me, I would rather exchange ideas and do not like the one word comments at the end of an essay. What is the point? Did they even read it?

Carry on!

Ever since I joined 2 months ago , there had been a lot of days that have been a rollercoaster ride . at the beginning , I was lost , confused on what to post and what not to . At first my posts were barely noticed , but I knew it was just the starts I I did not give up . There were days where I said alright that's it , "I'm done with Steemit". But I actually never gave up . I kept going because I know I am better than that . Some of my posts now receive a lot of upvote and sometimes they receive as little as .10. I always wonder why that happens , it is the timing , are people not interested anymore , are they getting tired ? But I know that I won't settle for less , there will be good days and there will be bad days , and what's best is that we learn from one another

Yes, the novelty of a descentralized system can be confusing. Like you said, we come from a real world where we expect all the decisions to be made by a central body. Whether we like it or not.

In my humble opinion it is this very culture that fosters the bad habits; for example begging, poluting... we are not accostommed to think for ourselves, or to believe we can make significant changes through our own decisions. Because, there is a huge sense of responsability in this also. So we bring all those learned, old values to this community. In this case, I suppose, it is up to the ones with a clearer vision to make those in the tribe to be more productive on the Steemit journey, and this is when the teamwork begins!

@stellabelle - Very well articulated. You are correct in stating that Steemit is a test. I did go through Phase 1 exactly as you describe it. Perhaps I am still going through it. That ubiquitous $ number below the post dictates an emotional response. If the number is low, I start worrying that people are not interested in hearing what I have to say. However, with my positive mindset, my response to that negative emotion has always been striving to pick up new skills towards producing better blogs (both in content and quality). I never, even once, thought of bots to help me make money. For that matter, sure, I am happy that I can share my ideas or thoughts and make money on Steemit but making money has never been my objective. By virtue of god's grace and my hardwork, I have been able to generate sufficient money to keep my family as well as my parents happy and that is all that matters to me.
I have started thinking of giving back early on, when I did not even have 1 SBD or Steem yet in my account and started hosting contests for Minnows with rewards from my own post earnings. I have tried to support the needy with donations (however small - as per my ability). I understand that Steemit is a community of caring and intellectual people that stick together. I respect that. Therefore, whether I make it to Phase 2 or not, I will at least never ever be someone who harms Steemit.
Hope we all get together to help Steemit become stronger and we too, as Steemians and individuals, evolve in the process to have stronger relationships in life and a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks for speaking up, as usual, against things that harm Steemit. Upvoted.

Really nice post, I started on Steemit with phase 1 but I realised after a week that its not the money you have to do it for...
if you do it for the love of sharing your view then i am sure the money will follow anyway.

But the botrings are the scary ones with the sad shortsightedness of the greedy...
The fact that they cannot see that they would be better of in the long run by supporting STEEMIT instead of bleeding it dry is beyond me.

Its true what you say, the more focus that's put on the money in anything bring about decay in that activity in my opinion, but without the money carrot it is hard to build something of size and influence in society, cheers.

Hi, sorry for the LATE reply. I haven't been very active lately.

I've always drawn since I was a kid. And when you draw characters soon you'll get the need to see them doing something more than just stand there. And that's when you start wanting to tell stories through your drawings. I think that's how I got into it.

Thanks and you too! Expensive and cauliflower are two words I didn't think I'd see joined together, still cheap in Spain as the locals live off meat and olive oil!

@pjcswart | Aug. 16, 2017, 6:03 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

The price pretty much went quintipled. Restaurants here even make pizza bases out of cauliflower now. You have to pay more, but it is huge. We are very fat nation, so the diet has caught on like wildfire.

The results are amazing, although some doctors and dieticians warn against it. They say it has serious side effects for your heart. But hard to say if that's because they are lobbied by pharmaceutical companies to say that.

Where in Spain are you from? Meat and olive oil sounds good to me...

Thank you so much for this. Following you. I hope you have a WONDERFUL day!!

I like the sound of a cauliflower pizza base, sometimes the dough is just awful and the worst part.

I'm living in Valencia, but i'm English - here for the sunshine and to escape politics (its easier when you don't speak the local lingo very well!)

Have a good day too!

It tastes better than flour dough in my opinion. That is if they do it right. Skill is required. Where is Valencia?

Yes it does sound better, if the chef knows what they are doing.

Valencia is east coast of Spain, plenty of sun and the city is by the sea :)

Preach, Steem Sister.

I guess it would fall under #4 but my reason for being here since July 2016 was just to finally express myself creatively again.

After crawling under a rock for many years with a "axe to the grindstone" attitude, I realized that the music/art/writing that was missing from my life was subtracting from my enjoyment of existence.

And right when this was getting to a critical level, Steemit is presented as though from the universe.

People are thoughtful, interested in conversation, in disruption and exploration of the marketplace of ideas. The authenticity of the human factor is what made me commit to sharing my art here instead of in the bottomless pit of self-aggrandizement that is fb.

And the whole time that I was throwing content into the Steemitverse, it was throwing content back at me that's changed me on a fundamental level.

Steemit has quickly become, and remained, a daily fixture in my world, and I think if any community has the best shot at changing the landscape, it's this one.

Teach the children well, Stell.

I love steemit more and more every day. We are tribal people and tribes can form online. I developed a tribe within the liberty movement over the past 10 years. It began online with many people in my liberty tribe, and I now know them in real life. Same with the bitcoin community. At first on steemit I was following and followed by people from those 2 tribes, but now I am developing friendships and respect for people I met purely on steemit. Its beautiful and I am so honored to be a part of this evolution in human technology.

Ok, I hear you, I think, so here is a theory, admittedly a condpiracy theory.

Steemit is described as a feee place, free of censorship etc, and it's picking up steam. (Pun intended ;) )

What if the botnets are not random spammers, but like paid trolls on YouTube, the "powers that be" see the threat and this is an attempt to neutralize it?

Even minnows can help stamp them out when they're small, but they don't know and are focused on stage one.

I've seen a lot of spam and abuse discussion lately, and minnows tend to look for those with "power" to follow, perhaps there is a way to educate the mass of new users about how to handle certain things?

It seems like there are more schemes and Bots on here than there are actual users. "follow me and I will follow you back" how will that help anyone? You should act on here like you act in real life.

I'm with you, brother/sister.

This platform has hooked me, hard. And while I see that anything of value will end up being gamed, I still get rather indignant and upset at people exploiting it for short-term gains.

Humans making messy human decisions to weed out the abusers can work, but its hard to scale that expertise into something that can combat a large automated force.

I don't know what the ultimate solution is. By having something worth stealing, people are going to do their best to take it.

On the flip side, there will also be people that enrich the platform because of the potential for rewards above and beyond validation and adulation from their followers.

The only partial answer I have is flagging down any accounts that are harvesting self-votes and making spammy nonsensical comments. But again, human judgement is needed.

Thanks for your post, gave me a lot to think about. Maybe a solution will present itself in time.

I'm with you all. I have a boring FB and Twitter accounts but those never really captured my imagination like Steemit did. I must admit that at first, my interest was piqued by the promise of monetary rewards for my posts, but the more I delved into it, the more I enjoyed the whole package and I was hooked. Interesting and valuable articles like this are what keeps me coming for more. The money is a good perk, but it has taken a back seat to everything else here. I intend to leave whatever is in my wallet for as long as possible. Right now it's not much, but amazingly, it keeps growing...tiny increments here and there, even when days go by without my posting anything. This is definitely something worth fighting for.

Hey @stellabelle I am new here and consider myself an Steem addict slowly reaching phase 2. Thank you for making Steemit a better place and not a money machine. We should all give each other content, thoughts, empowering ideas as if we are doing a present not as if we are selling fish at the market. Only then we can call this a community and not a trading union. Intellectual honesty and generousity will pay off and be rewarded. Thanks again

Whoa... SHINY! I got momentarily distracted by the concept of Colonel Sanders falling face first into an eternally receding ocean of cauliflower...

OK, so brilliant and true... and yes, Steemit is a test, and a microcosmic social experiment in which we can build a better alternative reality around this whole idea of decentralization. As I read I realized you just pinpointed something HUGE, that lies at the heart of the problems (or "growing pains," if you will) we're looking at:

>"It's up to Steemit, Inc. to fix everything"

We have had centuries of training in believing there is always a "they" at whose feet we can lay ultimate accountability.

In the brave new world of Steemit, the old Hopi saying is the truth "WE'RE the ones we've been waiting for!"

Yes. Yes, we are. And that also means ALL of us get to step into personal accountability; to step up and "be the ones" who flag spam and plagiarism when we see it. Because there's no "they" standing by to fix the problems, which makes this place uniquely beautiful AND uniquely challenging.

@mostafa1 | Aug. 14, 2017, 5:35 p.m. | Votes: 2 | [ VOTE ]

hopefully you support who deserve as much as you flag spammers . there lots of people struggling out there they're not spammers they publish quality original content but unfortunately they're newbies in a place there is no place for minnows. if you truly want steemit a better place you can do anything to those who leave steemit everyday because of they got no attention at all and I don't mean upvotes I mean any kind of attention comments views . minnows vote for whales whales vote for whales . there many ways you could help the community grow but you guys choose war @denmarkguy

@denmarkguy | Aug. 14, 2017, 8:29 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

@mostafa1, I am actually a fairly active curator, and that includes "minnow content," and I especially believe in supporting those who sincerely want to become community members and contribute here.

When we talk about "the war on spam" we're talking about the many people who go around and copy-paste the SAME comment on 100s of posts. Some... have little interest in learning, sadly. Either they never come back to read helpful comments, or they simply don't care. And we are also talking about those (UNlike yourself) who just copy content from around the web and pretend it's their own.

"If you have $0, you feel horrible" not exactly @stellabelle you know it's not about the 0$ but 0 views 0 comments that's make you feel unworthy I 've just made a post 2 hours ago and I got 2 views and zero comments. the feed is loaded it's too hard to get noticed in here that's why spammers thinks that its easier to ask people to view your work than to wait till you get attention the second choice is not easy at all. the point is not to get people upvote you but to see your work . I see many whales got upvotes more than views I don't know how and why. there is no strategies for newbies to get attention the only way is to publish thousands of posts till you get noticed and maybe not . if you guys care for this community why don't you made a project like resteembot which whales follow to see the new authors content that would help you to get rid of the spammers and reward the those who deserve. if you want the community to grow everything in your hands . instead of war why don't you make campaigns and projects to advise who need advice and lift up those who struggles out there. you could do many things to rescue the community if you truly wanted. sorry if the truth bitterness hurt
you @stellabelle I'll keep going no matter what Even if i get zero views am not going to complain its okay it does take a while i know sooner or later my work will get attention but i still believe that whales could many things to make steemit a better place. There is a new tag #original-content that would help curators to find undervalued authors. This community need to be filtered from the scammers and help hard working people and motivate them. Am I wrong?

Like any other social media website, there will always be people trying to abuse the system to gain money. Even on the other big platforms, there are many that are using bots for marketing, scamming people and abusing the platform without caring that the quality will go down. Very nicely done post. In addition to reporting the posts that are spam and keep an eye on the things you mentioned I also think that quality content that is published by new members and old members as well should be encouraged. That's why I liked your post so much, because you acknowledge the need for people that aren't doing this only for money, but because they like the community and want to improve it and share nice content that can be interesting and helpful for others!

>Many whales and dolphins still do not get their own intellectual and reading needs met.

Got to agree, the best I have been able to do is go to topics I enjoy to read, but even there there is a lot of crap to sift through.

Steem still needs to be about 10x bigger for the topic sections to get there own personality and we the curators will be better able to allow the cream to rise. Looking at usage graphs I am thinking 6 months to a year away. 1 or two big jumps up.

Until then I spend nearly as much time reading reddit as I do steemit even though I get paid to read steemit.

Great post, completely agree.
I think bots are an even bigger problem on Steemit than they are on say, reddit or twitter.
The reason being that on Steemit, posts older than 7 days stop being paid. So, there is a HUGE incentive to keep posting on this platform, even more so than on other platforms.
What is great at continuously posting? BOTS

Thank you for all the efforts you guys have made to keep this platform, as clean as possible. Cheers..!!

Hope I am not spamming your comments section😜😜

I'm only two months in on steemit, so I am just on the edge of getting the big picture, but the whole concept of steemit does excite me.

I love the freedom to create, try new ideas, get feedback both positive and negative, and connect with like-minded folk all around the world without the prejudices and constraints of other places.

That just grabs me like no other social network, forum or game I've tried before.

But as my days here have progressed I have just begun to realise there is 'dark side' here.

I thought it was just a darker shade of pale, but when I see numbers like the 5500 account bot I realise how fast it could become a total eclipse.

I am not sure if we need the Magnificient Seven or the Starship Troopers to keep the bots at bay. But either way I fear we must be willing to stand beside them to defend our little steemship of gold.

How this paid bots ruin the system, simple. Steemians post a junk content or a copied photo from somewhere in the net. Hire a bot for an upvote and resteem. Junk content then go hot tab or in trending tab. While the good content and original work left behind.

Very "spot on" article. I agree with so many of your well articulated points. It seems that any time money or rewards are involved much effort is spent on working around the system that provides them. It's just like rearing children, I guess. Every time they forget their manners a reprimand is on the way. I have found that old school methods still work even now with the grand children! LOL!

We need to fall out of the "bystander" mentality. Once we all grasp the understanding that there is no "centralized" body governing Steemit, then more people will begin to understand that the only way to save the platform is for those of us who care about the platform's success to actually DO SOMETHING about it.

We can't stand idly by, watching the fire as it spreads from room to room, expecting that the fire department is going to show up and save the day. We are the fire department. Each of us. Individually. And when we all work together to allow Steemit to be the amazing platform that we know it can and will be, there will be no stopping the growth!

>The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. Several factors contribute to the bystander effect, including ambiguity, cohesiveness and diffusion of responsibility. Research has shown that the term “bystander apathy” is an incorrect description because people feel genuine concern for the victim.

I agree that bots can be used as tools. Unfortunately the bots here are mostly built for monetary gain, not the improvement of content on the platform, which will eventually lead to the downfall of the platform due to lack of adoption.

People are treating STEEMit like a pyramid scheme. The people at the bottom are all supporting the ones at the top, as opposed to good content being created and shared and receiving the most attention and recognition.

The problem and the solution in this case are one and the same. Individuals cannot fight bot armies! Individuals shouldn't spend their time searching for plagiarized content.
We need to raise a bot army!
We're in the age of identity thieves, I guess this is where a lot of us have to pool together and be diligent.

Great post. It is actually demotivating for new Steemians like myself to see the reward pool getting divided because of automated comments, votes and plagiarised content.
I had a big fight with a guy over this on Steemit in my second week here. I flagged some of his contents because of plagiarism and too frequent posting. He then had a gang or maybe his fake profiles who started downvoting all of my posts. I tagged steemcleaners on his posts but not sure if any action was taken.

My favorite thought from your article was when talked about 2 things.

-It's not the best idea that wins. It's the people.
-We can't rely on Steemit Inc to help.

I feel like Steemit models real social life well. I'm socially accountable for my own actions. This is something dearly missing on the rest of the web.
When I look at it like that, it really puts a focus on building authentic relationships. The spammers will hurt themselves over time.

The other thought about not being able to be taken care of by a corporation is so liberating. That is why we're all here, but it so easy to forget. "Oh Dan, or some smart computer guy will probably fix it." No, WE get to fix it. You and I get to fix it and it's an honor when you think about the responsibility to nurture this platform.

Cheers for fighting the good fight. Tons of respecting flowing your way from me.

Even a newbie like me can tell that this precious platform is being contaminated with bots and spammers. The Steemit inner-workings are not as simple as some might paint want to paint it. I get messages like this in my wallet:

@stellabelle, When I joined steemit close to 2 months back, I was told one thing. Post quality blogs.keep posting more and more, Comment meaningfully and reply politely and be respectful to others. Success will follow slowly but surely.

After about 50 days here, my understanding is that -Quality blogs necessarily does not bring upvotes. That is not given. The blogs that I wrote casually and in a jiffy got well appreciated while the ones which I put in hard work and lot of time, went unappreciated or even noticed. In my personal opinion my un appreciated blogs are of much high quality and more valuable to me, than the ones which did well. I was wondering what went wrong whether I am unable to understand the steemians or read their psyche. Sometimes I got exasperated and a couple of times even thought this effort is not worth it, But then your blog cleared some of my apprehensions.

> People make decisions where to put their money based more on social and emotional reasons than purely intellectual reasons.
> Social bonds between people determine to a large extent where money goes.
> Humans are emotional, irrational and are in need of feeling a certain way.
> Each person who is capable of giving wealth to others is a unique person with unique tastes.
> Humans will feed their own children before the children of others.
> Humans evolved from tribes, and I believe we are headed into a digital tribe era.

This all boils down to the fact that this is not just a post quality blog and get paid site. That wont work here for all the reasons you mentioned above. But your solution to the issue was equally emphatic, when you said those who focus their efforts equally on building social bonds plus thinking in deep ways about things that affect tons of people are the ones who do well here. Perhaps that is the missing link for me and I am going to work on that more.

Regarding bots I dont think much can be done. Number of bots are increasing by the day, and paid upvotes are on the rise. this is a beautiful platform and it should have remained soley for humans, by the humans and for the humans without any bot intervention. Its becoming mechanical and that is really disheartening to see. I believe the "Money" factor is making people greedy and some are resorting to every possible manner to extract the maximum from the reward pool. But I guess, the bots are here to stay. This platform is still in Beta stage and we are the early adaptors. I wonder how this will be when this platform grows multifold in future and visibility window for every one gets narrower and narrower.People come in million shades of grey, so spammers, scammers and beggars will be there always. When one lot goes, another comes in

@stellabelle | Aug. 17, 2017, 4:28 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

very good answer. Bots are here to stay mainly because fraud, plagiarism and the link will happen, and bots are better fighting that. Crappy humans building crappy bots are actually the problem. it starts with the mind. Cheetah and sadkitten are good, helpful bots.

@gonzo | Aug. 14, 2017, 6:45 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I have been here over a year and I am still struggling to find an audience.

I think the problem started in the early days when the whales put their voting bots on certain people. Those few lucky individuals became the dolphins that are now in almost complete control of the rewards pool.

Currently, there are not enough dolphins to handle the massive influx of new users and unfortunately the ones we have are not actively curating non-dolphins.

This is creating a massive wealth gap that will only grow if we cannot find a way to turn more minnows into dolphins to keep up with all the curation needs of our new users.

I am hoping the whales step back in to create the next generation of dolphins, so the growth of new dolphins matches the growth of new users or I fear that we will not be able to retain new users.

@stellabelle | Aug. 17, 2017, 4:31 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I think the problem began with this: miners and programmers were the initial group to get wealthy. While I think programmers are extremely important, they are not necessarily the best cultivators of social communities, and buiders of highly social activities. The next wave of people, those who understand and can be more socially-inclined should have more power. It's happening, but it's slow. Many early adopters, like @donkeypong and myself are spending our time finding these community builders and supporting them, so they can build more.

I've only been here for a week or so, and already the difference between people who are here for fun, and people who are here for money is crystal clear.

I think it's a real shame if people are only interested in the $ - by focussing all their attention on that, they are missing out on the fun part of this community.

@connecteconomy | Aug. 14, 2017, 6:53 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Yes, Steemit is a reflection of "the real world" where 50% are still ego driven and greedy and the other 50% consciously want to create a better world for the wellbeing of all.

And just like in the real world, I hope "the flippening" to 51 % conscious creators / 49% greedy egomaniacs will come soon :)

We can all do our part in ways that work for us and are aligned with our beliefs. I wish we could inspire the spammers somehow to stop what they are doing. If they are draining the reward pool they are actively taking something away from the community, and that is just not OK. Maybe we could use their own technology and spam them back (and by "we" I mean someone smart, who knows how to do that, LOL).

Oh and I love the name @sherlockholmes. Such a memorable name to know who to turn to :)

I have blogged before and the 8 points u mentioned....its the same elsewhere...just scratch the word money and place attention/commenting/traffic instead of it. Blogs that dont get u payed - the same rules apply. I mean...I follow people, their energy, karizma even. Lets face it...you pick your partners and friends in rl based on emotions...its not an intelectual decision....so I do not see how people dont get this. I still think the main issue is in branding. "Blog for moneyz". It gets people deluded from the start.

> We are so accustomed to a centralized control structure, that it forms our every thought wave

I love your mind @stellabelle. Forever putting in to words how many of us feel. I was asking questions yesterday on on of my blogs, curious to see what allows people to accept a new way of living and new technology. It seems many just don't want to hear it, like you say, are people so stuck in a centralized neoliberalist system based mentality that they couldn't imagine a life without it? When they are ready, they will allow a new way of living in to their space. I wouldn't expect anyone to give up Steemit. And I wouldn't like anyone to either, especially if it brings value and a sense of belonging & hope to their lives. This is the way things are meant to be. Much love @stellabelle

So what we really need is an army of anti-bots. Bots that go around killing other bots.

They cold be our very own super-heroes, with their own TV series and everything :-)

I'd like to see the ability for bots to do anything on here stopped. They don't really add anything and they just make it worse.

> Easier said than done

But not impossible. Ban the bots, ban multiple accounts - take away the vectors for gaming the system. Why dos the community have to d all the extra wok to clean things up when the people who develop the code can fix the problem by taking away the functionality that allowed the abuse in the first place.

If you can code it in, you can co it out.

I got on Steemit and I got others onto Steemit to share content, make friends, have fun. I didn't get involved t participate in war for few pennies.

I'm not disagreeing with you @stellabelle or suggesting that you are wrong. i'm just frustrated that it is all just 'left to the community' to solve when the people who built the problem should be solving it.

Perhaps at some point an antibot function will be developed.
However as in the world at large, good content will eventually stand out and be rewarded.
It may take longer because of the large pool of users and spammers, but it will happen with persistance.

The problems in this microcosm are the same as in the larger macrocosm called earth . The solutions will be the same also . There is no faction that has a one size fits all . Only a faction that has temporary control . So I agree its up to to the individual to learn to love battle instead of victory . Then there will be no disappointments .

As a new user I can confirm your theory really works, and this transaction between stage 1 and stage 2 is something that we all should make a daily effort not only for beeing able to glimpse its potencial of those who are at stage 2 but also the true potencial of steemit when the majority of Steemians will be at this second stage.

So I see that at least as a 2 steps mind oppening, when you get to the stage 2 and when you worry about guiding more people to this second stage. I'm really happy reading this post, it makes me even more sure that focusing at this 2nd stage is the right thing to do.

About being part of it, and contacting people doing a remarkable job here such as @sherlockholmes I've created a growth-proposal by creating the tag #steemit-police to make in order to build another bridge between every one and those amazing users, with the potencial to create a economic
encouragement to guide people into the direction of this second stage

You may want to check the cn tag and the epic raping of the reward pool, why isn't anyone talking about this... spamming and raping by the Asian community and they seem to be license from the top, with this kind of behavior folks are seeing this test would eventually end in the drain... i don't like getting involve in these things as I don't want to get involve in this flagging war,

I speak only Japanese, not Chinese. I think each community needs to deal with their own. If you cannot read Chinese, then you have zero business trying to figure out what is good vs. what is bad. If it weren't for Asia, our Steem price would be way lower than it is, FYI.

Its a line that separates the "stage 1" people with the "stage 2" people. if you are trying to "survive" in means of living in poverty, then making some more money to fix your life is what you NEED. and you NEED it now...

Stella, thanks for the insight and advice. I joined two months ago and enjoy Steemit more than Facebook, twitter or other social media websites. Steemit is the end result on the sharing economy journey. As we move from asset ownership to to access to resources economy, a person value is more about their ideas, the network and their data. Steemit is at the forefront at teaching a person how take control of their information and the value it has. Will follow your instructions on spotting the botnets. Just an appreciative Steemer.

@jacquelyne | Aug. 15, 2017, 12:04 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

yes yes yes. I am with you also. I am addicted. I support creating culture and curating valuable content to build a sustainable fabric that weaves this community and strengthens our bonds and commitments to this platform in a healthy way.

I have been on this platform for a month or less. I already went from money eyes to looking at my emotional attachment to this growing social movement. My posts went from trying to shock and grab your attention with bright colors (like mcDonalds did lol) to creating vlogs that get me at my vulnerable and personal best, and also advertise Steemit in inadvertent ways through soft hints and the like lol. I feel it is my new calling to share my vlogs in ways that create valuable content as well as make a statement for Steemit that i can share on other platforms to grow us.

My life has been forever changed by Steemit. I now make more art and am more actively pursuing my passions than ever before, because I have an audience! I found a place that values my value. And I also see the value others bring, and we can share in this. Once we are out of "Steemit Survival" as you called it, we can get creative and use our minds and hearts to build this platform up to it's potential.

What I realized also is that there are so many people still stuck on money money money, not that I don't do that too, but when I see posts about "please help me" and "give me upvotes" without any creativity or context, I imagine the same thing I do when I see someone begging on the streets for change.

Sometimes I give "beggars" a little token to show my pity, but that only perpetuates the general issue I think... because by giving these people upvotes or follows out of pity for them, I am rewarding their self sabbotaging behavior for either not being creative enough to post something of value, or not being confident enough to see their ability to give valuable content, and so validating them to continue begging...right?

Well, I'm glad you are talking about this, and I am excited to see what kinds of solutions come about from this dialogue.

Tribes! That's exactly how I see the future as well, tribes that develop their own culture but make peaceful relationships with other tribes in order to coexist in a pleasant fashion. I am also looking for a tribe here. I've found a few great people and I'm trying to get them together outside of this scheming, bot driven, crypto trading mode of talking to each other in the Be Awesome discord channel which is linked in all my posts.

You know I marked you for a potential tribe mate early on, but it's always hard to get the attention of popular people. It'd be great to get you in our chat. We have language practice rooms as well, だから、いつでもどうぞ。

Even if you don't make it over there and fail to see and upvote all my awesome undervalued posts, I know it's because you are spread quite thin. I still appreciate your presence on steemit X-D. At the very least your comment section has proved very helpful in the search for tribemates whenever you talk of a gift economy and community and tribes and everything else.

Keep being you!

This was a beautifully crafted and thoughtful post. @diabolika just treated this topic the other day here and we discussed it a bit. I remarked there that

>There is a lot of emphasis on rewards, and I totally understand it, cash motivates, it makes life easier, it helps us feel like our time has been spent productively. In our world in general, financial rewards are often considered a sign of appreciation, but it is only a placeholder for the real thing.

>I generally try and show my appreciation (with words) considering I can't impart much in the way of rewards yet. And I know when someone writes a thoughtful comment and engages with me in a post, that is worth more than a big upvote....

I am swimming with lots of minnows, and this topic in general seem quite common, as is the concern that people have for spending lots of time on something then getting almost nothing for it (not even comments). Anyway...

So you get my little upvote, a resteem and my heartfelt appreciation for this post. I wish I could do more, this message needs to get out there and make the rounds. I haven't been here long and am not all that computer savvy, but bad bot armies are obviously a problem. Nevertheless I am also encouraged by the apparent increase in community building bots, where people have made automated high value accounts that, for a trifle, minnows like me can make a bigger difference.

Great post, thank you!

You're absolutely right that its getting harder and harder to get noticed and stand out. I've noticed that on my own posts. The feeds are being clogged with unoriginal content and its very difficult to sift through the garbage to find the authors that make quality original work.

There does seem to be something broken with the steemit sign up. I thought all account requests were manually checked first before approval was given to a new account? Yet thousands of spam accounts are being created.

Until this spam epidemic is dealt with I think things will only get worse. fewer views, fewer votes and a more diluted reward pool every day. And like you said, if they're not dealt with quickly they will have so much power that we won't be able to get rid of them and the whole steemit experiment will become a spam platform and the quality content is drowned out until people leave. Sorry i feel like I'm rambling now, its just that I love this community and I wish I had discovered it sooner, i've wasted years on instagram and facebook and seeing it stumble is upsetting.

It would be nice if the developers did a cull of confirmed spam accounts. In the end these people will continue to do what they do until they're kicked. Low rep doesn't seem to phase them. They just upvote themselves with their many fake and bot accounts anyway..

There are two kinds of people in this world, one who run after the money and the second category consists of those who keep enhancing their skills, knowledge, creativity and finally money runs after those people. Being humans, we all find shortcuts to become "Bill Gates" over night and it surely doesn't happen to most of the people.
Imagine if we implement such a system where one has to go through a test before signing up on Steemit. We can draft some questions through which we can get an idea about his/her future intentions and activity on Steemit. I guess we can stop many spammers if this is implemented.
I know to some people, it will sound stupid but just throwing my idea.

Nice but kind of down mood idealism... What in life come easy???
You had to pass your school exam, then uni, then lick asses to get shit job to be just a number in a system that slave you and make your run you head out by pressuring you in all way or form... Media, social, look, shopping, rank elevation to look good with your neighboors... Now every one is posting on facebook...
STEEMIT is the same but positive productive though, to build a better future...
sure you have the money seekers but like every where peoples are in difficult time & need more money then governement set as salary so need to get more to supply food for your family and surounding...

FACEBOOK IS 4.5 trillion $ about, so imagine will be steemit that share 30% to the owner, 30% to the server and programer that make it every day safer & easier & the 30% left is split between the user who by them post generate traffic & promotion thats create coin cause each click & post have a value as much as each new steemer coming every days...

So let say if only FB be doing the same share... let say only 1/10 of them value divided be 4.5billion user how much will you get...?

Steemit is the future & soon FB, INSTAGRAM & all the other will have to do the same if not every one will move platform....

On this i wish you a fantastic week and suggest you, better then to look at the bad id tief or else bullshit like self voting, focus on the good & keep it on... Share the knowledge & love...

Always shit going on every where, its part of life =)

POWER & RESPECT

Very impressive postings, most of the new steemit like me have also experienced things like that, never did any flags or tags.

Sometimes also between the title and the contents of the article do not connect, because the contents of the article just doubled from next door.

Perhaps by reading your article a few friends of steemian's can understand how to use steemit well. Especially me this.

Thank you for stating my concerns for the future of steemit also. I see people on here pumping for newbies to come to this platform, but few have the patience to navigate and take the time to figure out what this is all about. Not so old myself, but truly treasure friends and community we have made here. Hope we offer something to keep people connected. 🐓🐓

As of last week, I too have just been on Steemit for a year. It is incredible how much time and energy people waste here, arguing and complaining rather than just getting on with it.

Sooo... I'm off to get on with it around Steemit. There are people to meet, posts to read and comment on. =)

Happy one year Steemit @stellabelle!!!

hi @stellabelle, thank you for bringing to attention the work of some of these folk you have mentioned. I love the work of most that you mentioned, some I had not heard off, but now am following.

As a minnow here on the platform, but a minnow that is studying the data, I have found a lot of 'suspicious' activity that I have not reported or put into my analysis posts. the reason....well I have seen flagging wars and downvote wars and being just a minnow, that's all I need to happen......

@steem77 | Aug. 15, 2017, 12:15 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

of course ... I agree with you

> So, what is stage 2 exactly?
Stage 2 is a survival mindset that is hyper-focused on other things besides the money ticker. The people who get to stage 2 quickly know the following things:

Money exists in the minds of people.
Many whales and dolphins still do not get their own intellectual and reading needs met.
Humans will feed their own children before the children of others.
Humans evolved from tribes, and I believe we are headed into a digital tribe era.

@stellabelle Great post.

I had a chuckle when you wrote "money is in the minds of people". I immediately thought, "yeah, my landlord!"

I agree that Steemit is a platform for the evolution of portraying information, though one of the biggest hindrances to the progress is plagarism.

I am new to Steemit.... Whatever of value and persistent actions for a long term gets us good results. I see Steemit is the best example for this as it takes a step ahead from all the other stuffs around by paying for valuable time and knowledge shared !!! We need to do our part of creating value and I think Steemit will sooner or later take actions in regards to people using bots and whatnot just to make some quick bucks....and ruin the system!!! ReSteemed .

We definitely need to learn how to punish these bad people with botnet. In addition to the apovotism, we need whips. So that society can be defined by scoundrels who only engage in begging.

For beginners, they need a sandbox with which they will go out and they will be seen by more people.

I understand that stealing is not good, but if you look at the joyreactor, then everything is done pretty well for old and new users.

Translate to Ind :

I've been here for 45 days on steemit, at first I was so lost, I didn't even know what kind os things I could post to make people read them.
Then I realized I needed to write more original content, about my life, or some tips to help another steemian with my knowledge.
And nowadays I've been trying to leave aside the amount of money in my post, I try not to care about it, and I try to focus on the quality of my story, or the topic, or responding the comments to make a nice talk with others. Is just amazing how can this social network can change your perspective about it.

I've been on Steemit for 4 days now, and I'm still confused and I'm spending a lot of time just trying to learn and get some tips. I ended up on this post which was great because I'm learning and I'm enjoying the nice talks within this community. And it seems like people are really nice to each other since I did not yet see any real arguments or bad comments. It's just very nice to be here. I also try to make quality posts, which is hard to do sometimes especially when we are supposed to post at least 1 post a day.

Agreed brother... But what I have been propounding for quite some time now is that the mere survival of steemit platform lies purely on circulation of money. Honestly speaking, steemit as a social media platform is currently nowhere near Facebook and Reddit. People only flock here to make some money to start with. Once they become successful in their initial forays then whatever you wrote follows. However all I'm trying to say is that in order to get to the point where people get to pH 2, the initial algorithm of steem which purely is controlled by whales has to be tweaked through a hard fork.

Hi there,

Thank you for this great post it shows Steem and Steemians at different times during their experience here. The future of this site has been on my mind seeing from a few months back rewards were higher, but had to work hard at it whereas now effort goes in and nothing really comes out! This is sad and I wonder if it is people harnessing bots to make a gain when outstanding work and photography is now ignored 😢

I do hope the times will change I guess we will have to wait and see 😊

Thank you @stellabelle for getting us thinking!

I'm fairly new to the platform and it all still seems a bit overwhelming to me.
I've been trying to focus on original content, re-posting material I've created over the years, as well as creating new content specifically for this platform. Unlike my posts on Facebook, sharing music videos from YouTube, or links to interesting news or events, I'm trying to focus on material that contributes to this unique space and not just post for the sake of posting to make money.
I see tons of news, music and links that are obviously not the authors work, and numerous posts filled with useless/meaningless content designed to spam the system daily. Many of these posts are rewarded, above and beyond original content creators, and I can understand the frustration of those trying to practice proper etiquette on the platform, whose hard work goes unrewarded while the spammers earnings multiply.

I like so many others have employed the use of re-steeming bots, in attempts to increase traffic to my posts, but from the tone of this post, I am sensing an apprehension among some in the community about the ethics of this practice.

Are automated botnets like resteembot or randowhale ethical?

Should I employ them to boost my performance and increase my followers/upvotes?

What ethical alternatives are there for newbies like myself, trying to grow Steem followers that you would suggest, that aren't an irritant to those who are more familiar with the ethical and moral considerations of the Steemit community?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to be unintentionally breaching any ethical standards intrinsic to this platform that I may not yet be aware of as a newbie moving forward.

Thanks for the useful information in this post. It's information like this that helps educate newbies like myself on proper Steem etiquette so we can all work together to make this a better place for everyone.

I don't think we need to see bots as bad necessarily. To me they are like the algorithmic trading in financial markets. They can bring corrections and stabilize the markets. But we may need to put corrections in place the same way the financial markets have been able to mitigate their harmful effects.

But good point. FOLLOWING YOU!!! Have a WONDERFUL DAY!

Stage 1 is full of suffering of our own choosing. The botnets, the spam and the trying to do things that will give you more money, leads to a maze without an exit. I agree with you, this platform presents an opportunity to share your own unique essence. You don't need to try to be yourself, you just got to be yourself. And everyone sharing their unique selves is just beautiful.

We need a lot more than a few heroes to tackle this spamming problem.

What if the number of comments and posts per day would be limited by your reputation and/or months you've been in steemit? Could this take away some of the spamming problem? Quality over quantity.

What can you say about steemvoter which was operating for auto upvote but only for themselves. They asked anyone to register first in minnowsupport and asked the new registrant to write the two names of the creator to their rules which in turn will automatically vote the two. But the worst thing is they don't even bother to visit or upvote the newly registered members after what they have promised to vote each other and followed. They asked for registration fee before anything else. One notable thing is the two creators would make sure that their names were in the members rules for auto upvote but the members would ask for everybody to upvote or follow each other. That's a very fishy thing to do. Unfortunately, I made a roar there and then. And that, they would hate me. Well, I don't like dishonesty and misleading information.

Words of wisdom! This technology will indeed change the world one day. We are the creators of the future. I was watching a documentary this morning released in 1995 when the lady asked "What is internet exactly"? Crazy to think that 20 years later, we could not see ourselves without it. Blockchain technology will get there one day. Thanks for sharing this. I wish there was more authentic people like you seem to be💙 Unfortunately we live in a society where people abuse of the system.

I'm your huckleberry.

I wrote a post a few days ago on why I quit Steemit for a time. The response it gathered was unprecedented- I had no idea just how many people were fed up and frustrated. What frightens me is with all these real live, talented humans leaving, it only leaves more room for bots and spammers and poor content publishers to flood the platform.

I have heavy faith in the potentials and future of Steemit, but as I become aware of more and more stellar creators being chased away, it's getting worrisome.

We must stop this. I care about Steemit, and I care about my tribe. It takes a village and the more of us standing tall with firearms the harder it will be to infiltrate.

Ever since I joined steemit, I see it more of an opportunity to speak out my ideas and another portal in my matrix life. I wrote why I constantly write even I am just making a cent's away because I come here to write.

There comes a point where I see people care more about how much $$ they make rather than the quality they put in and it was upsetting me. Then, I set out my mind straight again and I know, I need to engange more and networking better.

I've recently written down my concern about spam since you mention #waronspam. I highly value originality and interaction. I want to interact with human, not just a generated bot comment who don't even spare their time to read then come to me and say " follow 4 follow".

Heck, among thousands of reasons why I joined steemit is that I hope to see no longer of #4f4 .

I truly support your waronspam and don't let the robot take over steemit ecosystem :)

cheers and have a great day!

I totally agree with you @macchiata I too myself highly value originality and interaction and I know I'm still new to this, but I've experienced a lot of 4f4 and it makes me feel uncomfortable, and I totally don't agree with it or like that, because I spend a lot of time, work and my passion and then you get confused especially as a newbie, who is for real (not just to make money) and who really wants to be here and learn and have respect for others.

This is deeply thoughtful, and inciting!

yes! We need to take massive action against this perceived and now very real threat...so what do we do?

Should we begin to wield our red "flagging power" cards against suspected accounts?

I look forward to seeing how all these developments (good bad and ugly) turn out to affect the steemit 2nd life here...

Afterall the world has managed to keep doing well, even with all the evil and vices that abound... So why should steemit be any different? when evil rears up its ugly head, there will always be forces of good that will rise up to combat it...

as the scriptures say "...overcome evil with good"

wow this issue will go on as long as steemit will...I had to study, analyze and test (lol funny how I used test here ) .. to get along , hopefully...but it is that wrotted idea that aspiring steemians comes with here...especially if you are rerally young and like to monkey around money here and there...I believe that if we takle this issue from before entering steemit then we could solve the issue and solve it right to...am talking about having a simple message under the steemit logo saying perhaps "don't ask to follow" lol or just "no beggars" ...some message to intimidate potential no-gooders...eventually a fee will be applied to enter syeemit or even a "debt" sanction like I dont like being crushed down with upvotes instead let apply me a fee .. like I see whales flagging people just because they think the reward is too high.. eventually I will have to report bad guys and do my part as well..it is tough but I want to protect steemit ... unless your title is some kind of a subliminal message :D lol, which I dont by the way but... of all the 1000 and 1 "crypto" now available or in the making only 0.5% will survive but ..that's political ... steem on !! :))

@Stellabelle, How interesting to find this post!!!!! I posted something very much along the same lines, just yesterday. There's too much emphasis on the financial rewards. Not enough on the fact that here on Steemit, your expressions aren't at the whim and control of some big Corporation. You are accountable to the Community instead. Even "Trolls" aren't tolerated very well, because if they can't be constructed, they are down voted into obscurity. I'm looking forward to "Stage two", and finding my own niche. Finding like minde people here on Steemit to share with....... BTW; I like cauliflower!!!

These bot-birthers are but beggars lining the gilded streets of our digital kingdom.

They can be starved out of existence like governments, leeches and all other parasites.

At the end of the day, they need us to go along with their foolishness to make a quick buck, which they immediately sell - thus returning it to the general circulation of resources here. Currency is fluid and their greedy hands can only catch so much...

Exactly the issue that happened with other social networks that tried to pay people. At some point the herd of people that don't care and just try to spam and game the system end up destroying it. We need to take care of this community.

Wow! This was very well put. I'm new here on SteemIt so having decided to jump into the deep end of the pool (and invest my hard-earned dollars) has me learning to swim here at SteemIt in a big way. Your write up has really got me up to speed with what's going down here and of course having some of my own skin in the game makes me care about this place's well-being in all sorts of ways.

I guess, for me, the first question I have is, "What should I do if I notice bot activity on my page or on another person I follows page? Do I flag the bots post?"

You know... This is the only place in the world (that I have found) that really understands how money and influence are tied. I loved how you made the bullet point about money and the economic/spiritual evolution of people wading ashore here... People who are used to the dysfunction of the old slave system.

Your absolutely right... and the thing about this place is that if we all knew what we had our hands on here... we wouldn't have to resort to such debauchery. These things may have “worked” in the old world but the new world is founded upon things like integrity. And it is integrity that previously people didn’t have to care as much about. Before you could rob a bank and then move 100 km away and do the very same thing… No one knew the difference because they didn’t know who you were…

Although SteemIt (and things like it) is technically the new frontier for the modern age and many people think of it as the Wild Wild Web… (Or the worlds biggest bathroom wall! LoL!) In actuality concepts like integrity are more important than ever before… I mean seriously… Now, if you pick your nose, everyone knows about it in China… in seconds! That’s how important integrity is today!

This place is amazing and it is the only place I know of where I can actually buy influence... and influence is where true money is derived from. Money flows toward people who have authenticity and genuine care for the state of their fellow human beings and their ultimate evolution.

That’s what SteemIt is all about… It’s not a place to commodify your time and worlds into dollars… It’s a place where likeminded minds can meet and collaborate or people with differing values and views can sharpen each others belief and thought patterns through active dialogue. Communication and information is the source off all real power in this world and it is collectively how we change the world we live in… a place that is better for all of us. Where freedom and love abound and slavery, hate, and war are an ideology of the distant past. What we are doing here is of vital importance… and anyone who doesn’t get this isn’t a good neighbour and should be treated as such.

That’s my ponderings anyways.

Thank you for the great read! Please keep them coming! 😊

Hi Stellabelle! Your post touched me. The things you wrote about freedom resonate so much to what I wrote in my introducingmyself post. As you can see I'm new here. I'm still learning to use steemit. I haven't yet published many posts. I published some posts in the last 24 hours that were instantly replied by those "resteembots". One of them replied to tow different posts under the profile @investigation and the other replied to one along with the latter under the name @counterweight. I went to see their pages and the comments there weren't very positive. It all appeared very suspicious: they had good reputation but very bad comments. I hesitated at first to flag them but since I'm new here, I didn't know if I should. So, I chose to ignore them. What do you think I should do? Should I send a message to @sherlockholms?

Thant said, I appreciate your post. I think it will help me not to get too addicted and I'm here for the freedom, meeting people and creating.

Thanks a lot!

I'm glad to see you taking this stand @stellabelle. I'm one of those new people who have come here to share thoughts and ideas and quickly realized that I was a lone voice in the wilderness so I lost my voice.

I started surfing the feeds and even joined a trail for minnows. Somehow I lost my way into steemit chat when it went down and I can't seem to get back in. I tried a few ways and then gave up as I don't know if it's a selective place.

I've never used the voting trail I joined but I met a lot of great people in Discord chat. I've never used any of the upvote bots or resteem services. I haven't found a tribe and I'm not really seeking one.

One thing I do is if I find something worth upvoting then it's usually worth a comment. It's the only way I know how to socialize. I have no real skills to make myself useful in any real way.

I'm still waiting until I understand just what witnessing is comprised of other than hosting a node. I think you and sherlock (who I've recently encountered) and a few others are on the right track. The follow for follow spammers are mostly an irritant and hopefully will change their ways.

It's these botnet groups (5500+ REALLY?) that create weight enough to scrape huge amounts of the reserve pool like some fishing trawler that are a puzzle to me. Some of the finest most respected Steemians and witnesses are behind these. It lends an air of legitimacy to them. It also make them untouchable doesn't it?

I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly here on this platform. Flag wars keep small fry like myself from speaking out. I used to find obvious scammers and plagiarists while surfing feeds and report them and I felt the thanks genuine at first. Then I started feeling like a whistle blower the way my concerns were ignored. I still see plenty but say little now because I feel my account has suffered.

I'm beginning to feel like an outcast here but that's okay because that's the skin I've always been in and I'll continue to go about observing the beauty and artistry here and just try not to step in the nastiness that seems to come when too many are trying to feed off of an ever dwindling resource.

I've taken notice of you early after arriving and there's a few other long time Steemians who are as distressed by these growing concerns. Many seem to be powering down and out. Some threaten splitting off from so called preminers in the hopes of creating a more fair platform.

I don't know about all of that as everyone is allowed to make their own choices here...so I understand, as there are no rules. If you want to create a "guild" under the auspices of helping new comers with an eye to building a loyal following and in turn benefit financially then I guess that's part of the no rules clause.

I guess too that there's nothing to stop other long term steemians and witnesses from doing what they feel they must to preserve the integrity and the spirit of what Steemit purports to be when someone is enticed to join. Anyone can see, if they explore the many avenues of expression here, that there is an underlying feel of desperation, despotism and fear here.

You had my interest from day one @stellabelle. For what it's worth, with this post, you have now gained my respect. If there is anything I can do to help just let me know. I expect nor want anything in return...other than seeing this platform survive whatever it is that it's going through. You call it a cancer. You may be right...let's just hope there's a cure. It will be a very sad day indeed when all that remains on the chain is memories of better days. I've already lost my smile. I don't want to lose my heart here as well.

I will look further into the links you've provided and support them where I can. I feel your choice of gif is perfect for the subject matter of this post. What foolish resolve.

Keep on Steem'n on!

I'm afraid I can't speak for Steemit chat as I don't think I was ever able to spend more than 10 minutes there. I have spent many hours in Discord chat and I can say they're a friendly and helpful enough bunch. Only place I know where I can get answers to questions.

Just be yourself and engage as you have with me here. Kindness and patience goes a long way to gaining friends here.

Thanks @stellabelle, I have been thinking along the same lines. On the one hand you just think about the money and try different things. But at some point you realize in the long run you will be happier and enjoy it more, and make more money too probably, if you just have fun and get to know people.

Right now my challenge is whether to build a niche to blog about (like maritime shipping or politics and news or languages) or to just focus on one thing. What I probably will end up doing is posting on all three. Hope it works out.

One of the reasons I am enjoying Steemit is because the people on here seem very real. On FB and Instagram people are just showing the best moments of their lives.

Have a wonderful day, following you!

A really good article for newbies (like myself) to read. I've been blogging on the net for almost 10 years now and I have been looking for another place to blog, which is why I'm on Steemit. But you're right - there is so much good stuff, world-changing articles, magnificent photography, articles that educate, and so on, in amongst the "dire mire". We just need to stick to our principles and be active in weeding out the abusers - I'm all for that!

That's one of the things I hope to find, like you called it a tribe, but I want to say it's a community, where we have unspoken rules but everyone knows how and why to comply with them. We are the ones who create the value for others. Teachers and, well, executioners when we just don't think some work is worth our time. I hope to read more from you.

Having been on Steemit for just over a month, having had my expectations properly aligned and rather seeing this platform and audience as a wax I can mould a better world from, I'll concede to attribute most of that to this logic:
>"...if you have been struggling for a long time in life, you might begin to see the outlines of stage 2, on your own."

I felt like you were talking to me.

This:
>"...send money to Africa in seconds"

I hope you mean that NOT in the way of mainstream charity, but rather as an opportunity to be part of a larger market place, (I wanted to use village square but you may struggle with the imagery 😉) by reading our stories and value it as it meets your need for "feeling a certain way."

I enjoyed every letter of your post. On a lighter note, since you're biased towards Africa, I'll invite you to read my fictional little girl letter to "Umfundisi" here. If you enjoy that I invite you can explore my blog further. I mostly write fiction with afro themes. And I am working on a project to preserve part of my heritage on this permanent blockchain.

Stellabelle I read your article with great interest. I agree with what you say and although I have very little idea of what botnets are they sound like they are damaging. One thing I have discovered is that my original idea was to put up good content and comment on other good content. I comment as fully as I feel fits my idea and the post. I am not in it for the money but if after a few years I get something that would be good. I believe in good and goodness. I think that in this world there are the kind givers and the bad takers with not much in between. I never respond to a follow me unless the post warrants it. I never in turn ask anyone to follow me. If my work has merit then they will. Steemit has allowed me to emerge from the "age" closet. I am 75 and have friends of 2 to 102 and deal with lots of young people. I still feel young and have the good furtune to remain healthy. I have a very sick husband who needs my care. I am happy to care for someone I love and am glad that after a dreadful year he seems to be on the mend. We are fine. I am now able to find work again and I still write. Steemit allows me to write freely and have some hope that the world, despite all its current woes, can be a better place. Thank you for your informed article. JV

This post changed deeply the way I perceive steemit as a social network. I also see a lot of desperation around the idea of getting upvotes and followers and very few people follow my profile for the things I like to talk about. That's sad, given the potential of this platform, but these people will find their niche (or tribe) where everybody has thousands of phantom followers once steemit will be a grown website. In the healthy part of steemit there will be mainly content creators and content consumers like on every other platform.

Hi @stellabelle. I great article, the short amount of time that I have been part of Steemit, I have also noticed there is way too many bot accounts or spammers. I wish there was a way that we could get rid of them.

Hello again @stellebelle, im a couple months old. I've noticed myself not wanting to do random posts anymore, instead after 1 bot payout and my love for learning how to make my customized comic book reading at the moment, thats is now my staple. It's a bit ironic but I think I would have done it anyway, although not as fast, the bots did inspire me.
Episodic type blogs are what I like, although not many see my stuff or are not interested it seems I enjoy doing them so i've made a 2year plan and invested into it.
If I make 10cents per 8hrs of work or not I will continue, and along the way may make other great blogs. I more than likely won't put time into any bot system tho, I make content, others can build the community togetherness, my time should be used to create, Nice post!

Thanks for your post!

I just made a post here about this, while commenting on Blueorgy's post, "What NEEDS to change NOW in order for Steemit to Survive." I think my comment is relevant to what is being discussed here. I quote from my own post:

>When it comes to spam, it thrives only because it is allowed to thrive, despite efforts of individuals who are doing some great work to stop it.

>Consider this analogy - if you don't open the door to your house, no one comes in. If you don't like someone who gets in after you open the door for him, you can get him out.

>Similarly, you can decide who comes into Steemit. But a designated team is needed to fight spam, that fights it at the door and takes it out if it happens inside Steemit. It will have to be a funded effort with predefined job tasks for every anti-spam team member.

I am ready to contribute to an initiative aimed at making things better. I could help quite a bit since I am on Steemit during the odd hours when the spamming is at it's highest ebb.

I am new to Steemit and this is my very first comment on a post. Within this post, I found advice and recommendations on how we are all responsible for maintaining the integrity of this new community. Your passion is what has inspired my first comment. I wholeheartedly agree with you and believe in the concept of freedom through decentralization and self-regulation. I admit that I originally joined Steemit with the lure of monetary gain but reading posts like yours has shifted that focus. Thank you for this and please keep writing.

I'm relatively new to Steem, still kinda figuring my way around (heck, I still can't figure out why my profile pic is still blank!), drift in and out, read a few articles here and there..... But I have to say, this one's definitely one of the more insightful articles that holds a lot of truth about human psychology and values we place on relationships in general, and I love the parallels drawn to what's happening in the real world.

As a relative newcomer, I discovered Steemcleaners pretty quickly and report there when I find something plagiarized. They even make a small payout for my efforts. I will be checking out spaminator too. I hate that ordinary decent people are being taken advantage of and that sometimes posts with plagiarized text and images are making money at the expense of the original creators, and at the expense of those who strive to do everything the old fashioned way - through their OWN hard work and efforts!!

I think emotions drive people think more about their daily live, their friends around them and they will seek a way of understanding the world and form his/her own personality, it is good ! Emotion - Think - Action, we are all in the wave, it is hard to find ourselves. Hope we can always find ourselves and be ourselves. No fears for future but more looking forward to it :)

I think the spam is not that big of a problem and that the people dealing with it are doing a good job as they see problems and knock them down.

The bigger problem is trying to grow the platform with more content creators. They are not coming due to the complexity and the lack of reward at the beginning of their time here.

I love the place and boost it as I can, but I see the hurdles to entry as very daunting. The fact that "the good stuff" takes place in chats in another big hurdle for me and the people I am connected to on other platforms. As content creators we do not have time to chat. We are creating content and marketing - not chatting.

I'm connected to over 12M people on various platforms. There are 20-40K active here on any given day. I'm here for the Alexa ranking and cannot get it unless my individual post pays $10. After 8 weeks here - only one post has come close to that number. Maybe in 16 weeks I will have a better result. Most people I know would not hang out that long to find out.

That's real though, I hadn't thought about it like that... the bots and things can kind of water down the value of steemit if that's what we make it all about but they still seem like a useful tool at times. Hopefully, It doesn't end up taking away the real power of the platform though.

I have been in so many stages I lost track! The first stage for me was amazing when I started to make money with my posts. BUT..... I got hooked on it and it slammed me in the face when I found out I was focussing on the wrong things. So, I changed my mind settings and reinvented my steemit-self for the better.

I no longer post for the money, I post because I feel the need to share my thoughts, work and emotions. I put my time in making friends instead of followers and I am working my ass off to better my self every day, not for others but for me.

Steemit is the future and I am sure many things will change around here for a long time until it hits the moon.

As a poet, artist and snake like creature I do not always find it easy to find my way here but I will never give up trying!

I liked reading your post, many great points are said and I think many people will benefit from posts like this as in learning progress.

Excellent post @stellabelle! There's definitely a lot of work needing done if we want to see steemit succeed in future and it is users like yourself with high number reputations that are most effective in influencing how others use the platform so I am very thankful to you but I also understand that steemit does not belong to you or me and that our idea of what and how it should be and should work may not be shared by the majority of users now or by the masses that may be on their way to join us. I'm not a fan of bots and automated or paid for curation such as randowhale (especially when people use it to upvote their own work) and even some curation trails that are just as suspect but they seem to be becoming more prevalent every day and there are no guidelines for using steemit which is of course a good thing but it is also a negative as well. When the white paper says that even abuse of the voting system will bring success to the platform it is no wonder that people feel it is acceptable behaviour. :(

Hope your day is going well my friend!

I've been only around for 2 days on Steemit but I already went through some weird & nonsense posts where people are building small groups where they should Vote, Follow and Comment for the same in return. These small groups as an empty structure will be built in the foundation of something very creative, futuristic & open place as Steemit is. The problem with this that we are not able to build something huge without having a solid base.
Thank you @stellabelle for this great & eye opening post and I hope many people will read it and follow your advice regarding reporting all fraudulents.

I've been here for a few weeks now but this is my first post. I thought this was a spam site. Unlike youtube, many commenters don't have financial incentive to comment useless shit, so I figured this place will die. But now, I hope it doesn't.

I love the idea of a decentralize facebook. Maybe I'm still in level 0, and I don't understand how steemit works (where the hell do they get the money to pay content writers?), but I think, from reading your post, I want to believe in it. I hope it succeeds.

Great article. I think though...that there are many methods to becoming successful on steem. With each new user comes a unique person that gravitates to their own interest. Its about trying to find the median in that while realising you will still undoubtedly never get everyones attention. Everything is not for everyone but everyone doesny necessarily need to like everything for you to be successful.

I'm not a robot. I'm fraid to share my opinion about these bots but i have to try talking. Some of them really gives our undervalued posts self esteem and they really introduce the minds of them that helps the minnows grow via their programs.

But the others existing non-profitable corrupt bot accounts based on my experience when i was just starting last month, being a newbie, i'm unaware that they get more than me when i earn on my posts as they also curate my content. They also rape my personal rewards not only for Steemit, and me knowing that they are always present to give me some instant little profits, i focused on quantity of my posts instead of Koala Tea, and the result is, the couple of months since i start, i just earned a few, and i just have few followers and my rep is low. It made me stop and think about what's happening to my account.

And as i dig deeper when i got to the stage 2 as of your writing, what i got is real appreciations from humans, and i'm emotional right now. Great post!
For the newbies, focusing on quality instead of quantity makes our future brighter. Peace! :-)

The grey area comes in when you question what exactly is spam, to some the mere act of engaging and posting/commenting is a huge amount of effort.

I for one think that automated comment posting in order to garner followers (aka the introduceme/yourself stuff "Hi I upvoted and followed you should do the same to me!!"), tagspam (incorrect tagging making it hard to find relevant content to the tag) and abuse of signup process leading to botnets is 100% spam content.

Services like bidbots are also somewhat spammy, adding transactions to the chain instead of forcing/allowing the users who are working with them to naturally curate and engage with one another.

The ability to send a large memo on a 0.001 sbd/sp transfer is also rather spammy, so perhaps limiting the amount of data able to be entered into a memo vs the size of the transfer is in order.

I feel like you are saying we should use bots to fight bots which adds to the bloat as well. Centralizing all of those anti-spam services into a single entity would be preferable as each transaction from each additional bot = bloat, so only one 'steemcleaners' is really required. They must just incorporate additional services to deal with the additional threats.

I will likely ruffle a few feathers with my opinion, but remember, it is just that, an opinion, we all have one. You are more than welcome to disagree, educate me, show me another path.

If I am wrong take the effort to correct me and reply to my comment, don't just throw a flag and be done with it.

If I'm right and you agree, feel free to reply as well and act as you see fit.

or maybe I should just go hit one of those bidbots to push my comment right to the top, get all the viewers, and win bigger, right? haha (tongue in cheek)

Is all about changing the outlook from a stance of greed / attention to one of empowering and uplifting and using the platform as intended.

As long as your intentions are pure, and you remain honest with yourself and with the ones you engage with. I wish you all the best on Steemit regardless of which path you take.

Look to value add, not take away. :)

All the best.

Much love. <3

I know this post is old, but it made me think a lot about the future of steemit. I have only been here for a few weeks, and I have seen ridiculous posts and comments of scammers and beggars, and it's often very difficult to look the other way. A few days ago, there was a person raising money for her neighbour's dog who was 'hit' by a car, and she was begging steemit members to pay for the operation. Some people have suggested she down powers and pays it herself, and others suggested she paid for it herself and then presented the proof so that they could contribute. But of course she refused. And then there are those who don't read posts and just write comments like 'Nice post. Please follow me and I follow you' regardless of the content. Earlier I was reading a post about a member who is losing his mother to cancer. And I went through the comments, I saw two comments. One wrote, 'Interesting post...' and another wrote, 'Very hot post bro....congratulations.' What can be done to people like that? It's not that they are insensitive (they haven't read the post) but they are simply commenting because they heard it's good to comment. I really want to see if there can be some kind of a penalty for people who write comments like that or those who want to drain money from trusting members who would believe what others say. I will contact the members you mentioned to see if anything can be done about these issues and whether the average member can do something to stop them. Many thanks for your contribution.

Interesting post, and although much of it makes a lot of sense, there are some points which keep me wondering about right and wrong...

When I joined steemit some 45 days ago, I felt like Alice's brother in wonderland. On my dust level I was too aware of my total unimportance to expect any rewards worth mentioning, so maybe before your stage 1 there was a sort of 0.x beta for me. The mere joy of finding more good content than I could explore and interaction with wonderful people!

Of course I was pleasantly surprised, when my art got some attention and people actually rewarded my posts, but now I'm in the stage, that I feel I can't give back as much as I want. I spend a lot of time... I think the word is.. curating (?), enjoying to read and look through posts but constantly suffering from depleted voting power, as there is way more than I can reward.

Now what you write, makes me worry, if I made all the right decisions. You say bots are essentially bad... after a lot of thought I had delegated 100sp to a bot on minnowsupport, as it seemed to be a good thing. Also use steemvoter for a few friends since I know they always post good content and I don't always have access to the web...

I certainly don't want to abuse a good system, as I have seen it happening in the "real world" to many times. For me, still considering myself a newbie, it would help, if there was a trustworthy place, where one could get valid information of what is good or bad for all of steemit.

Sure, there is lots of info out there, but the inexperienced user has a hard time distinguishing between facts and opinions...

I'll check the posts of the steemians you mention in your blog and hope that will help me staying on the right side :-)

using voting bots is not bad and delegating sp is not bad either. I like to vote on posts, so i keep my SP on this accout. You're doing fine...

I'm just writing a lot of fiction on Steemit, it's what I love the most. Kind of drags me away from my daily business in which I'm a writer who is also involved in politics, the world of lies and scams :(

I told about 7 other people about Steemit. Out of those 7, only 2 actually signed up and posted content. 1 out of those two only made 3 posts and gave up Steemit with no optimistic outlook. Welcome to the few.

Jeezus, this is gold.

Truthfully, I’ve been going through another wave of disillusionment & discouragement with Steemit the last month or two. Stuff like this from you comes like a lifeline — great recalibration point.

part of the issue is that steemit is a vast, dynamic organic beast....If you stop, get comfortable or just coast, you won't be playing the game and other players will replace you.

Came across this post after digging a lot. This is an eye opener about how things work on Steemit. Helps one in transcending to Stage 2. Thanks and would love to read more from you.
