Yo me confieso culpable.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever walked into a stationery store, seen a beautiful notebook with thick pages, a leather spine, and a minimalist design, and immediately thought: That journal is going to change my life; I’m going to become the most zen and self-aware person on the planet.
I confess I’m guilty of this. Today I want to talk about those moments when our passion for stationery and the desire for idyllic self-discovery lead us to accumulate empty journals, in a romantic quest to capture our soul. I have a confession to make: for a long time, I was obsessed with the idea of keeping a perfect journal. I’ve desired and bought wonderful notebooks, swearing that, upon opening them, inspiration and the habit of journaling would magically flow.
The reality? My enthusiasm lasted only as long as it took me to write the first three pages. The fear of ruining such an expensive notebook with my cross-outs or jumbled thoughts ended up paralyzing me. In the end, those expensive, beautiful journals became mere decorations on my bookshelf, barely a moment after I bought them. A funny (and somewhat costly) mistake that taught me that the tool doesn’t make the habit.
The funny thing is that my true journey toward self-discovery didn’t start with fancy covers. Back in 2020, amid the uncertainty we were all experiencing, I found my refuge in the simplest of things: plain, ordinary notebooks. They didn’t need to be perfect. I wrote the date in by hand and looked for daily journal prompts to clear my mind. Without the pressure of “ruining” an expensive notebook, my writing was free, chaotic, honest, and real. That’s when I understood that self-discovery doesn’t come on textured paper; it comes from a genuine desire to look inside yourself.
Despite my struggles with journaling, there is one pleasure I’ve managed to stick with consistently—and one that has truly transformed the way I live: my planner. Unlike blank notebooks, which intimidated me, my planner embraces me with its structure. It has become the map that guides me, allowing me to bring my projects to life and plan my life step by step. Interestingly, this sacred habit is tied to a very pure love: for two years in a row now, my parents have given me a planner as a birthday gift.

>
Every time I open it to jot down my to-do list or my goals, I’m not just organizing my day; I’m also reminded of my family’s support and love, which fuels my dreams.

The excitement and anticipation of starting a new notebook remind us that we are curious beings, always seeking to grow. But the real magic happens when we let go of the expectation of perfection and embrace the consistency of what actually works for us.
What was that stationery item or kit you bought, swearing it would change your life, but ended up putting away?
