> # We Talk Friday
>(WTF)

This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 43: Money Back Guarantee?

Firstly....

I am disappointed by the Canada - Finland hockey game tonight. I think it was goalie interference and the coach should have challenged the goal. I also think that the offside challenge was legit. But, I might just be bitter at the second one. Oh well. Finland will play for bronze and I hope Slovakia beat the US in the other semi, and then Canada for the gold.

And now for something completely different....

> What the fuck happens with the illegal tariffs now?

Will all those billions collected have to be returned and will all the differences on consumer purchases be refunded? All that disruption for nought? And the retaliatory tariffs from other countries - since they were likely legal - what happens with them?

> The US government is a clusterfuck.

Well, apparently the importers should be able to claim a return, but the US consumers can go fly a kite, as there is no mechanism to legally return to them. So all up, the rich will get richer, the poor poorer, and the loser is the majority of the US people who will end up footing the massive bill for all the mess this has created, and its reversal. It is like paying for dump trucks to use your property as a landfill, and then paying for the clean up of the same land.

> Drain the swamp, and then dump it on everyone.

Whatever happens, I think we can all agree, legal or not, it was fucking stupid from the start. The last year has been a starring show of government incompetence across the world, with stupidity, greed, and fear leading the decisions that affect us all.

Will we ever say, Enough is enough?

Doesn't look like enough is not enough. Because it seems he is going to ignore the court. So we get fucked some more. Eventually this madness has to end.

On another note, I am watching the U.S. vs Slovakia game now. Looks like it will be the U.S. in the finals if score holds.

Who was that shooter that grazed his ear? Just a few inches off of it never starting ;D

>On another note, I am watching the U.S. vs Slovakia game now. Looks like it will be the U.S. in the finals if score holds.

Yeah, as expected. I am watching too.

Can't say I wish death on anyone. Even the orange oompa loompa wearing a diaper.

Yeah I know. Just saying, the shot was taken and a few inches and the whole world is different again. Life (and death) is a series of sliding doors.

@coinjoe | Feb. 20, 2026, 9:48 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

For sure. However, I think it would have created a great deal of upheaval here. Maybe even a lot of violence in retaliation.

@tarazkp | Feb. 20, 2026, 10:24 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

I suspect so. A couple days before, I suspected an attempt would be made on Biden. A close call to allow him to retire and gain votes.

I am not sure this is the case. The diaper filler is definitely a part of it but, as you say, this is a whole team effort to game the system and take control for the elite that pulls the strings, holds the money, and fleeces the public.

If that event was authentic, and successful, he would have become a martyr for morons and the party would have even more emboldened with more false virtue signalling power with another out of touch puppet at the helm.

Right now, my opinion is that those wishing death on the putrid bag of filthy are barking up the wrong tree. If there is any hope to repair all that needs it now, they need to ring that guy and his cronies up before he is dead. Otherwise, he will be the martyr again, there will be a more elusive boogeyman to blame, and these crimes will go unpunished rather than a public showing that you can't do this and get away with it.

Hoping he stays alive long enough to pay the piper or the slope gets more slippery.

The only way US return those funds is with a gun in its head, so I think for now it's imposible. That money pays the bills of the Court too. Tomorrow the press will forgot everything.

The rich might benefit from the system, but the typical consumer is the one who suffers. Seems we really need a change.

But change from the top never benefits the bottom.

You are right the US Government showed complete incompetence, but I am not sure it will play out the way you said with US consumers. The tariffs were mostly absorbed by the corporations and we never saw price impacts in fact many things got cheaper last year...

I wonder what got more expensive then.

Chocolate :) It went from $2.50 per local bar to something like $7+

Win bronze or lose gold.

I think Slovakia will play hard for the bronze.

The landfill analogy is hauntingly accurate. We paid the tax through higher shelf prices for a year, and now the importers get the $175B refund while we're left with the inflation? It’s a massive wealth transfer disguised as a legal correction.

@tarazkp | Feb. 21, 2026, 8:01 a.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

The entire economy has been a massive wealth transfer for decades. It is just speeding up. GFC, COVID, tariffs.

@zekepickleman | Feb. 21, 2026, 5:50 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Hey I wanna talk about all 3 of those things!

From the perspective of a Canadian, that was a different game for me. I know how dangerous the Fins are at that level of the sport and going down 2-0 felt like the end. They battled back hard and it took so many tries to get through that defensive blender and hot goalie. A couple of close calls like there are in every game and I have been on the other end of them many times. Having faith rewarded by a character comeback performance is pretty sweet as a hockey fan. Not as sweet as a gold would be though. The battle for bronze will be equally epic.

I never thought of the consumers til you mentioned it. I hate the tariffs because of how they are being tossed around without and the fact they are paid by the importer, which raises cost of goods sold which either reduces profit margin or price to consumer. I was pleased to see some pushback on the lawless chaos and potential relief for the small business owners if they make good beyond all odds. The consumers will be left out in the dark again won't they? If feel sorry for the 50% that didn't vote for this shit.

Man it would be pure jokes if my business wasn't subject to the waves of instability and indecision from the manic opportunistic grifting.

@tarazkp | Feb. 21, 2026, 8:04 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

The interference in the goalie annoyed me. Should have challenged it.

And yes. It is the consumers who will suffer. Not just in the US, but globally. The rules changed and prices have steadily increased the last few years, bad once up, they won't go down. Wage growth is still far behind.

What was the voter turnout on the US? A minority actually voted for trump. Different story if compulsory voting - which is why it won't happen.

@zekepickleman | Feb. 21, 2026, 4:09 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Ya voter turnout is a factor in the US for sure as it is in an even more complacent Canada. Hopefully a silver lining to these times is that people can see the stupid shit that can happen if you don't vote, and the active political narrative inspires more people to do so.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 73.6% (or 174 million people) of the citizen voting-age population was registered to vote and 65.3% (or 154 million people) voted.

We joke up here that the Did Not Vote party might win all elections.

>We joke up here that the Did Not Vote party might win all elections.

I am not a fan of governments, but since we have to have them at this point, make voting compulsory. And later, the majority can vote out government.

@emmanuel50 | Feb. 21, 2026, 7:09 a.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

On the tariff issue, what stands out to me isn’t just whether they were legal or not, but the ripple effect. Even if importers can claim refunds, the average consumer who paid higher prices won’t see anything back. That gap between policy decisions and everyday impact is where the real frustration lives. It feels like ordinary people absorb the shock while institutions adjust on paper.

@tarazkp | Feb. 21, 2026, 5:24 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

And the rest of the world has had to go through all this shit. The RoW should cut the US off economically and let them see what happens.

Enough should have been ages ago, I've been reading more and more about judicial orders simply ignored by US government... the orange toddler will keep creating all the distractions it can think of! It feels like watching a bad movie, but you can't turn off the tv.

> Finland will play for bronze and I hope Slovakia beat the US in the other semi, and then Canada for the gold.

C'mon now... Canada vs. USA in the gold medal match as the last event in the Winter Olympics will be quite the sendoff. Maybe I will finally watch something besides curling.

> the rich will get richer, the poor poorer, and the loser is the majority of the US people who will end up footing the massive bill

I don't think it could have gone any better for Team Trump. Although they wiped his tariffs off the books, it had the wanted outcome of enriching businesses and fleecing consumers. I've read there were also companies buying up the tariff refund rights for 25 cents on the dollar that are now raking in 4x profits.

I am losing hope and confidence that the USA will be able to vote its way out of this mess during the midterm elections due to the scare tactics ICE will use to keep people from the ballots. Power is concentrating even more and time is running out for people to effect any change to fight back. Ready to move to the beach somewhere in SE Asia and bury my feet in the sand.
