Hitting my Modular Synth with a cocktail stirrer - to create unique gongs and scrapes.
This was perhaps one of the stranger moments in one of my shows on Brixton Radio...
Real world to control voltage courtesy of a Mutable Instruments Ears module which includes a contact mic, amplifier, envelope follower and gate generator.
Specifically - I'm hitting the contact mic in the Ears module with the plastic end of the cocktail stirrer, triggering the gate generator. That envelope is then fed to the 'strum' input of a Mutable Instruments Rings Module which creates the gong sounds.
Later in the video I'm also scraping the cocktail stirrer over the surface of the contact mic, creating an envelope which is used to modulate (change) the gong sound (pitch, brightness and damping) as well as having an effect on some of the percussion in the track.
Let me know if you'd like to see/hear more unusual instrument creations/combinations in future shows!

Hey - thanks so much for listening!
So it's not really the sound of the cocktail stirrer. But the cocktail stirrer hitting and scraping along the contact mic is used to create voltages that are then used in the sound creation. The most obvious one is hitting it creating a gate which triggers the start of the gong sound. The more subtle stuff is around scraping it over the contact mic with different intensities - which creates envelopes - essentially voltages that change over time - which are used to change other things in the patch.
Yeah ok so I'm pretty nerdy :)
Thanks for the curation!

Hey thanks so much for watching!
I do actually have a bunch of modules that replicate the circuits in the original Minimoog. I have 2 oscillators, the filter, the envelope generator and the LFO section - so only about 2/3 of a Minimoog. They are used in this patch for one of the main tuned voices - though you can't see them that well with the camera angle in this video. I might to another set which focuses on them actually... so many ideas!
I've love a real Moog too of course!
Have a great day!
