I do have to say that mining fairly honestly is not a thing anymore. Unless you have some serious hardware your not going to end up mining anything which ends up leaving it to a few core power users, business, governments which is the part that worries me at the moment. If everyone with a CPU or video card could mine at at a profit then that would decentralize everything more.

Given how it has gone so far, I don't think this will be possible for Bitcoin unfortunately. What comes to mind though, is how Ethereum said is built to be resistant to people with ASIC's. While Bitcoin may still be vulnerable, it is some consolation that what could be the future of legal and interpersonal contract enforcement would be resistant. Any thoughts on how Bitcoin could be made easier for the majority to mine in a way that does not change the whole system?

I Stack gold and silver due the physical value and it has been around as a storage of wealth for so long.. but how many peole actaully know it's real value.. the central banks do the goverment do but not many people do..
I do worry that the crypto currencies are just a way to the cashless society once they show you how good it is and everyone is on it they will say we don't need cash any more.. fiat maybe a bad system how it is now with the debt and it being based on debt. so i do worry if say there was no cash at all and how easy it would be to control and surpress the people and a certain view. Indian Rupee is not backed by gold. It is a fiat currency, meaning it has no intrinsic value other than what is derived from government laws and regulations. As far as i know no currency is backed by gold anywhere in the world. It does not meen the goverments or central banks do not have gold. just that the paper notes cannot be exchanged for gold with them directly as they once did. where the term promisary note came from. you can buy gold with any currency but it is not backed by it how can it be.. there's way more paper money than gold. Plus they can print as much as they like.
think was 1971 when america got rid of the gold standard and seeing as the us dollar is the reserve currency no currency can be exchanged unless into dollars first..So everyone else must use the same system. thats why we have whats going on in the world to save the dollar and stop countires wanting to ditch it as the reserve currency.

I am not aware of any other currently operating websites and blockchains like Steemit. It would be good to know if there's anything else out there. I haven't been able to find anything close to it, from the research I've done.

Akasha is an Etherium based social network, but I don't think it's fully functional yet (please someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I checked Akasha, it is available as a desktop app. There are just a few users, let's see how it turns out to be.

Synereo is running a site called Wildspark to curate Youtube videos, but its really poorly set up. They have you share links to the youtube video to Facebook and a couple other places you can choose, But the links show up like a Wildspark add instead of a video link and nobody clicks on them.
They say that the video creators can contact them to claim their rewards if people choose to Amp their videos.
I didnt think much of it. It will take a lot of work yet if they want to make something out of it.
But you get 10 free coins to start.

Looks like there's Steemit and Golos, I checked Akasha too but it is a desktop app and I do not think people will like it.

Great post, we use steemit for a educational tool and for fun. I like the fact that anyone can make cryptocurrency for their posts, the idea of a currency that is not controlled by any government.

There is one potential large negative to cryptocurrencies. An EMP (electro-magnetic-pulse) detonated over the US could erase everything, and make all computer chips non-functional. I don't think the odds of this happening are high, but I would avoid putting your life savings into cryptocurrencies. Just something to be aware of.

I've been looking for solutions to world problems since my very young age. One of my oldest and most memorable moment was about this idea. I'm authentic. You are entitled to your opinions.

It was more something like an acknowledgement of my incapacity to find a viable solution but maybe violence isn't totally necessary after all.

Fiat currency, I wouldn't call it money, is indeed backed by violence.

Without military powers protecting the banking interests, fiat currencies would have failed long ago. Some people like to suggest that the US Dollar is backed by oil. It's not or at least hasn't been for a very long time. It's backed by military power instead. That's what maintains its value.

The US government demands certain countries continue to use it, and those countries know the consequences for refusal. Look at all the proxy wars and conflicts happening now and in the recent past. They are or were all about securing resources, confiscating gold, or some other economic profit.

Therefore, this isn't a soundbite or gimmick sales pitch. It is a genuine problem, and Steemit is part of the solution. Instead of directly confronting a system we have no chance of defeating, we are instead creating alternatives. We are walking away.

Most people in this thread might not even realize this, but crypto is breaking the centuries long banking paradigm without firing a single shot. No violence is needed. People simply stop using fiat in favor of crypto, and then fiat systems, including all the violence supporting them, end.

I too don't consider fiat money as money but that's the term used on Wikipedia so that's why I use this term. Funnily enough I've just looked at the page there and here is the first line.

Yes, the "powers that shouldn't be" love to confuse money and currency. I guess an easy way to answer the question, "Is it money or currency," would be "If the government didn't exist, would it still be worth something to other people?" US Dollars, no. Crypto, yes. Precious metals, yes.

See, when I come home from work - I can't wrap my head around all of this frilly language. Someone like you has to just put it all into plain English, in a way we can all understand.

If I can't get past the first paragraph of a post, because it sounds like a Unicorn ran down the end of a rainbow to find a pot of gold with whipped-cream & cherries on top - why keep on trying to read the rest of the post. I just roll my eyes and go find the next person who is original and authentic.

Really appreciate this post first heard about bitcoin in 2014, but could not invest as I had to choose between creating a business or invest. I choose my business which is young and still growing. I only started to invest in bitcoin this month a small amount each month is my plan. As I can see where it's going and the good it can do for the little people all over the world, were all trying to survive and be happy but the powers that be would have us under this modern day slavery to their greed and ever growing debt. It's quite funny and sad at the same time how gullible society is as a whole and how we allow a few to bully the mass. I feel that bitcoin will give the people back their power and then peace can reign globally. I thought that I had missed the boat by investing late it's not about being rich or greedy for me it's just about financial freedom, being able to be of service to others , doing things with passion and creating love every step of the way. I agree with you on most of the issues you raised, especially on cryptocurrency being an asset. I think, in looking for where to invest, cryptocurrency is still better than the stock market. On the issue of risk, it's a bit minimal, looking at the market trend.

I have many different baskets, so to speak, and crypto is only one of them. Then I split up my crypto too. :)

It's always nice to see people for whom crypto is more than just a means to profit. I do think the wide spread of cryptocurrency across the world will change things for the better. The governments will not take it lying down though; that's why Ripple worries me

I really wish I could afford bitcoin. Even when it was 800 per coin, I was struggling to bite the bullet and get one or two. I'm hoping to see steem become as reputable as BitCoin.

Wauw, I might be the first to say that I did not read all that in 1 row, it took me in total 4 hours to read it in bits, but it was however worth it!

I still don't understand most of all this, (I tend to be honest instead of pretending) but this article lead me a little closer, and for that I thank you. And because of that, I finally took my time to do the witness thing even tho I still dont quite understand it, but what I do understand about it is that it should be used on some who are active, and in my oppinion valuable and helpfull.

Really great post and very helpful information. I am still trying to figure out steemit and whether I truly like and believe in its future potential. It is these posts and more even the investment of time and thought that goes into such a post that shows me there is true value in the product / platform. With respect to crypto currencies and block chain projects, I am with you and totally sold on their value and potential for future. I have recently quit my job (similarly to you) also thanks to some extra profits in the crypto space which allows me to try something new in life and follow my passions (food industry). Just having the chance to be here with you guys meens so much to me! I feel lucky about already being in this space when it is all in it's beggining. If you thing that it is too late to get your piece of the pie, to get involved in the cryptocyrency space you are not late my friend. It is just the beggining of a huge project. That's encouraging! It hasn't been easy trying to talk to people about cryptos, blockchains, etc... I had an extremely cautious ex-girlfriend who didn't understand, and was scared that there was some sort of legal issues, so she made me stop trying to mine Bitcoins back when you actually could with a decent video card. I've felt like I missed the boat. This article gives me hope!

The world is in a very unstable state as of now, economy's grinding to a halt, but i do believe that Bitcoin and also many others Altcoins will be able to restore that balance.. hence after all you can't somehow make more bitcoin, but as for paper money i don't think it will ever beat its successor Bitcoin

Wow... this is a really well conceived and clear explanation-- going to bookmark this as a "teaching piece" for those occasions (many!) when friends ask me why I think "that virtual Monopoly money you're playing around with is actually going to BE something in the world."

Of course, there is still a lot of work and education to be done... and I'm not entirely convinced that it will be Bitcoin that will lead the way to mass adoption, although it might remain the "gold standard" of cryptos. I'd think something with fewer (technical) barriers to entry-- like Steem or some future version of it-- might lead the way since it's easier to understand, and accounts are just names rather than a bunch of numbers... in the functional sense, people are weird about ease-of-use.

Violence spurs from the individual permeates, their family, the city and their nation. I have faith that evolution will in time help people develop a higher mind beyond violence to increase ones oneness with others in time. Darkness is only the absence of light, cold is only the absence of heat and violence is only the absence of peace.

Amazing post, the only thing I miss about Bitcoin is the huge mining-farm monopoly problem...
These huge (mostly Chinese) mining-rigs are a threat for Bitcoin and should be mentioned. I think. Crypto will be the biggest economy, but we still have some issues to deal with!

A lot of what is being shown in the video “What is Bitcoin” isn’t true now. In the video, it says that since there is no bank as a middleman, there are lower fees. But as of today, this isn’t true. The other day I wanted to transfer a few dollars worth Bitcoin from my Xapo Wallet to my friend who doesn’t have a Xapo account.

Do you know how much they charge to transfer 0.00169750 BTC? I was given an option to either select the Standard priority which costs me an additional 0.00150966 BTC or a high priority transfer which charged me 0.00195806.

I have not sent bigger payments recently, so I do not know how much they charge for bigger payments. But I guess the charges aren’t low either way.

Bitcoin isn’t the same it use to be back then, back in 2009-2011 it was pretty much the currency that was a threat to the Government, but now it is a tool for everyone to make money.

Almost all the Governments around the world have started building laws for crypto currencies, if you sell your cryptocurrencies and convert them back to fiat you gotta pay the taxes.

Maybe Bitcoin still is the coin it was once promised to be, but there are many coins out there whose sole purpose is to make money for its creators. The other day someone shared a link to an ICO which raised around 19,000 BTC, and these guys do not even have a proper idea of what their coin is going to do and why anyone should join their network.

I am someone who loves bitcoin, but I am worried that Bitcoin isn’t the same it was meant to be. Most people aren’t buying Bitcoin because it gives them some power over their own money, but most guys buy it because it gives them some good return on investment. Very few people actually use Bitcoin for day to day use.

Government is unavoidable evil so far. But cryptos can not beat it. Because governments control real sector of economy. Until the criptos become real investment instrument for real assets, it will stay just a kind of financial divercification and tax - avoid instrument for privat persons.

Nice post, and also a little sad in a way. One of the reasons the first entry to engineering and science on that day is because I really want to help tackle the problem of world hunger and the availability of clean water. Governments in all Countries are only giving priority to his personal popularity, few seriously eradicate poverty, because for them the public is only producing profits for themselves and their cronies.

I personally really like the currencies outside the Government, it's just my knowledge about it is still very minimal. I hope you @teamsteem want to help me in all the process of the knowledge of good steemit, bitcoin, as well as Crypto and other.

Sorry for the late reply was just going through your educative blog and I like what’s you have to say about bitcoin, but there are some risks to this so called “bitcoin”, such as government, some countries hasn’t even called it off such as China , Bolivian , Ecuador etc . While Canada are still deliberating on the issue. It as well depends on the country’s one lives in before investing .
