I get asked a lot about updates to SPK Network, and what some might not know is we have very long dev calls all the time, almost daily at this point. While in the middle of a developer call (1hr in), I decided to hit record and give you all an inside view of what is happening behind the scenes. I think I will continue to do this for future calls. This call was between Starkerz, Vaultec, and myself, ironing out all the details on the PoA system.

PoA has evolved into a very lightweight, flexible system that allows users to permanently store data and delete data and recoup some of the fees used for uploading. So, for example, you're encouraged to delete old videos as you get paid to do so!

That’s a really smart move. There’s so much content out there that’s not Evergreen.

Yes ,Poor quality and old post or vedios should be deleted. And focus to make upgraded and better one.

Have you guys discussed the implications of storing content that is illegal? This is not intended as a trick question. I am generally curious in the answer.

@vaultec | May 13, 2021, 6:15 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Storage nodes can opt out of storing content that they deem illegal or don't want to store for any arbitrary reason. There will also be a blacklisting system where we can prevent bad files from entering the network. This is an on going topic, but we will definitely have basic preventions in place.

Cool. Some stuff is obvious, but then there is always that gray zone. The tools put in place for the obvious stuff can then be abused on the gray zone stuff, which is why these things are always tricky. I wish the answer was easy.

Great information been shared, had never thought of this though.

Why does embedded video not function? This is just not good imo. You limit your audience. Who clicks on to go watch that...
If that is the aim, to get users on your platform then why? Isn't SPK meant to be part of Hive?

Fragmentation here is a curse.
Anyway I'll go watch...

It should work. I let the 3speak core devs know.

I think it is a peakd thing. It works on hive.blog

Damn @jarvie watching too much hentai porn broke the embed function!

great to listen to your conversations; I can understand that you guys are really trying your best!

I can understand the amount of energy it takes to eliminate the unnecessary and focus on getting start with the important things that can empower Speak Network

cheers Nathan. We want to make the best system possible from the start. We want to start with the basic framework, get a working proof of concept, than build build build to make it amazing. Very happy with the direction we are at.

I am surprised what could be called "investment" but of time, there is no doubt that it is to take advantage of the benefits and this is what can enhance Speak Network, I know people who help each other like this, it was nice to know a little more, if one day I dare to get involved I already have some very defined terms. Thanks for your post @theycallmedan :)

I like the idea of speak network much. Because that's such a core element of web 3 in combination with hive :)

Hive on!

Here is a detailed summary article about the discussion in the episode of TheyCallMeDan:

Overview

In this episode, the hosts engage in an in-depth discussion about the technical architecture and design considerations for a decentralized video storage and distribution network. They explore various approaches to handling the challenges of long-term versus temporary video storage, incentivizing miners, and ensuring the integrity of the network.

Balancing Permanent and Temporary Storage

The hosts acknowledge the need to differentiate between permanent and temporary video storage on the network. They propose a model where a small percentage of videos are designated as "permanent" and receive stronger incentives for long-term storage, while the majority of content is treated as more temporary. This allows the network to cater to both important, historical content as well as more ephemeral user-generated videos.

Incentivizing Miners and Validators

A key focus of the discussion is how to properly incentivize and coordinate the various node types on the network, such as storage miners and validators. The hosts explore ideas like using a sliding scale of rewards based on deletion timelines, having validators perform random sampling of stored data, and leveraging reputation-based systems to discourage malicious behavior.

Randomized Validation Process

One of the more sophisticated proposals involves a randomized validation process where validators are selected in a verifiable, but private, manner to audit storage nodes. This aims to prevent collusion between validators and storage providers, ensuring the integrity of the validation process.

Integrating with Hive Blockchain

Rather than building a standalone blockchain, the hosts discuss the benefits of leveraging the existing Hive blockchain infrastructure for certain functionalities, such as token economics and random number generation. This could significantly simplify the development process compared to building a custom blockchain from scratch.

Roadmap and Release Planning

The hosts agree that a phased rollout approach would be ideal, starting with a basic, functional version of the network and then iterating on more advanced features over time. They discuss the possibility of an initial token distribution and mining period before enabling full network functionality.

Community Engagement

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the hosts propose recording and publishing the discussion sessions to generate interest and solicit feedback from the broader community. This could help rally support for the project and identify potential contributors.

Overall, the discussion covers a wide range of technical and strategic considerations, showcasing the depth of thought that has gone into designing this decentralized video platform. The hosts demonstrate a thoughtful approach to balancing complexity, usability, and long-term sustainability.
