The rate at which insecurity is spreading in this country nowadays is alarming. It is going beyond anyone’s imagination. Just yesterday in Ibadan, the wife and twin children of an ex-minister’s brother were kidnapped. It is unfortunate that kidnapping no longer knows any boundaries. People are being abducted regularly, and it is sad that the government and security agencies seem unable to do much about it.
The most annoying part is what I heard in Gumi’s interview with the press about how the government knows many of the terrorists by name. He said it quite sincerely and even confirmed that he is in contact with them. This raises serious questions about how unfortunate and unreasonable some of our leaders can be. If the government truly has our interests at heart, it should do the right thing without considering political parties or personal interests. Nigerian lives matter, and we are all sitting on a time bomb right now.
At times, I ask myself why we have politicized everything in this country and made it seem as though everything is normal. Must we wreak havoc just to win elections? Some people behave as if they will never die. We only have one life. Why all the senseless killings, and for what purpose? Why must we continue to live dishonestly and always want everything to go our way?
Another thing is that there is something called repercussions. Many of our leaders and those behind the numerous atrocities being committed daily in the country seem unconcerned, even though their actions contribute to a state of chaos and confusion.
What do we really need as human beings to live and survive in this world? I do not think we need that much, yet many people want everything for themselves without considering others. Some accumulate enormous wealth for children or family members who may not even value it in the end, or who may end up fighting over it after the owner’s death. Life is meaningless if all we do is gather wealth and inflict pain on others, whether through our actions or our inaction.
If only we could always remember the final moment—the time when we will cease to exist, when the final bell will ring, and our lives will be taken from us. We will return to the earth, nourishing the soil and eventually becoming food for termites.
All is vanity, a chasing after the wind. It is important to remember that we gain nothing by causing harm and pain to others, because we too cannot escape death when it beckons.
Let us all reflect on that final moment when our bodies and all our power will fail us.
