the idea most people seem to have is upvoting 100 times a day at 0.1% voting power fooling them into thinking they're upholding the community themselves, which is nice as a token of appreciation but in most cases is simply trying to direct traffic back. As for the rest, i think its best to do your thing. Barring a few content nazis most people will not downvote since it wastes precious power and flagging is usually considered bad taste too, so far i have only seen it used by people who think they get to dictate what is "steemit" content, someone who was censoring someone speaking out against him and one guy who just asked a question ... if you're confused on any word you can put it in the searchbox. Statisticall speaking there is very little chance of getting a full time income from steemit since you are just "one fish in the sea" ... due to the fact you can simply buy power and votes or buy people to help you wreck someone it often looks more like the classic world than it does like the crypto-anarchy its sold for, if you're not willing to put in money up front i can only suggest lots of patience and treating it like a social network with a bonus, not like "im gonna make it big!!!", just see what happens :)
i personally try to not go below 90% voting power ever since its alraedy worth next to nothing at the moment starting out at 15vp and i try not to make too many posts either. Opinions differ, then again i only have one account (anohter crypto-capo thing since you can just buy them for 5 or 6 sbd hence the more money you alraedy got, the more clout and spread you can buy, which still doesnt guarantee you'll be making $5k a month soon :p)

There's lots of bots and marketeering and there's people who would try to shut you up if they think you pose a potential problem to their salespitch or rhetoric. There's jockstrap and the promqueen trying to push the peasants in the mud while the in-crowd goes woooah as they pass by and there's the 1%ers of Steemstreet who already had money and came in heavy calling themselves whales for some reason ... but there's a LOT of very interesting people here who are slowly building their own niche despite the lack of a blockbutton to keep both spam and content nazis out ... it depends on what your thing is ... posting quotes or puppies will usually net you very little but if that's your thing i think you should since the primary goal would still be to project yourself into the world and try to have fun doing it, else it will get frustrating
(and if you ask a question be ready for a lot of text lol, i can get carried away, but im always willing to help if and when possible and not threatened or co-erced to do so hahah)
