Let's Score Contributions!

BY: @utopian-io | CREATED: April 18, 2018, 1:45 p.m. | VOTES: 647 | PAYOUT: $138.61 | [ VOTE ]

The new scoring feature allows every Utopian.io user to influence the quality of contributions found on the platform and help bring rewards and recognition to those of high quality. This post explains how it all works and why we should score contributions.

Scoring Is for Everyone

As part of our efforts to decentralize the platform, encourage users to network with each other and give the community more influence on the distribution of rewards, we recently introduced the scoring feature. This allows every Utopian user to score contributions. To support this capability, we also introduced reputation to the platform.

A Unique Reputation System

Every Utopian account now has a dynamic reputation assigned to it. This reputation is calculated by using various metrics to measure the quality of the contribution you make on the platform. That is then weighed against that of others, with every reputation also weighed against the account that has the highest reputation value. With this, users are encouraged to contribute well in order to maintain their reputation levels in relation to other user's activity.

The level of reputation you hold on Utopian also affects the influence of your scoring. The higher your reputation, the more your scores affect a contribution's ranking and rewards.

Reputation Level

Every Utopian account has a reputation level from the ones listed below. Newbies have no influence yet on the platform (to avoid potential abuse) and have to contribute until they get to Beginner, which has the least amount of influence.

Elite holds the highest amount of influence and is gained through consistently making high quality contributions. Community Managers have this level by default, in accordance with the responsibility demanded by their positions. Moderators start off at Guru.

What Affects Your Reputation and How

To increase or maintain your reputation, you will need to continuously make high quality contributions. The more valuable contributions you make, the higher your work is scored, and the higher your reputation goes.

How to Score Contributions

Find Contributions to Score

Visit the contributions feed by clicking on Contributions in the side panel or by clicking the Utopian logo in the top left corner of the screen.

[IMAGE: https://cdn.utopian.io/posts/ee3d426d88c2d53c9309c04c9e3ce131f571contributions.png]

You can filter your feed by category. Choose a category from the list on top of the contributions list. (as seen in the image below)

[IMAGE: https://cdn.utopian.io/posts/4c240e4e20e3e0e6196e9b51be7631c74805filter.png]

Click the Score Icon

Once you find a contribution you want to score, open it by clicking on its title. This will bring you to the its content page.

You will find a blue score button to the right of the contribution's title. The number shown there is the current aggregate score. Click the button to view the questionnaire.

[IMAGE: https://cdn.utopian.io/posts/b7991951bdfb2e5eb98cedb8bb502c6f6419title_score.png]

Answer the Questionnaire

To begin scoring, answer the questionnaire as accurately as you can. The answers you pick will be used to calculate the final score given to the contribution, so choose carefully.

To see how other people have scored the contribution, click Most rated.

Leave a Comment

After scoring a contribution, you are encouraged to leave comments with appreciation, tips or suggestions for the contributor and the community.

Utopian will be on the lookout for high quality scoring and those who leave insightful and valuable feedback will get random fat upvotes on their comments.

Go ahead and start scoring contributions on Utopian.io!

Is utopian specifically for programmers and people working on projects on the STEEM Blockchain? I'm having a little trouble understanding it honestly.

@ms10398 | April 18, 2018, 2:02 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

No its not only for projects based on steem blockchain it is for any open source project.

And about it is not only for programmers. We have many categories like Tutorials, Video Tutorials, Documentation, Visibility and many more. Feel free to check out them.

@jonnyla08 | April 18, 2018, 2:59 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Thank you! I'm going to check out those tutorials you mentioned because I would like to see if I can contribute in anyway. Appreciate your response and the info. :)

@knowledges | April 18, 2018, 2:07 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Utopian is not specifically for programmer nor is it intended for only steem based project. We are limited to open source projects on github for now and hopefully, we may extend our support to other open source platform in the nearest future.

The question that most likely be baffling you is: How do i contribute ? Well the answer is, you can start contributing as long as you have both your steem and github account.

For more information, please kindly contact us on discord :)

Thank you! I'll check out the discord channel. I don't have a github account either so I'll add that to my list of things to get done. Appreciate the insight.

Yes, Utopian wants the community to participate in the processes and this is a way how they can do it. Every Utopian user can engage in scoring and discovering the high-quality work that has a value for the whole open source community.

This would be probably rejected :D We need a way for project owners to publish "updates". The blog is meant to be more for blog series and content creators, not for the owners themselves.

Reputation will grow with time and effort

It is just the beginning.

Keep contributing to get to a better reputation.

So you mean everyone is on newbie?

@princekelly | April 18, 2018, 2:59 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

sure, we will keep making better contributions

@elear | April 18, 2018, 2:44 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Hello @princekelly reputation is also based on which categories you have contributed so far. The categories which have an higher difficulty in general, also give higher reputation in a faster manner.

@princekelly | April 18, 2018, 2:58 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

at least, a beginner is OK for previous contributors . That's my thoughts

@eastmael | April 18, 2018, 3:14 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Have to get this in my system too!

@evildido | April 18, 2018, 3:27 p.m. | Votes: 2 | [ VOTE ]

Sorry but I’m confused.

As @utopian-io bot said
> Seems like you contribute quite often. AMAZING!

But I’m a newbie (not factually wrong).

Could you explain more deeply how reputation works ? How many « dev contribution » is needed to level up ?

Does reputation follows log10 logic like steem ?

In fact, I think more transparency about this is needed.

Plus, I’m little bit worried about this new system.
I’m probably pessimist, but I'm afraid that a big « fish » might break a young developer's effort and desire to follow the path set by utopian.

@elear | April 18, 2018, 3:38 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Hey @evildido you are Beginner. Why do you say you are "Newbie"? Beginners already have influence in the platform, while Newbies don't.

You made amazing contributions, but they are still a little amount compared to those who got top reputation badges.

We are considering an option to show how more effort you have to put in order to get to the next badge.

Utopian uses a custom algorithm for the reputation that is solely based on our platform and its logics, which is also heavily simple. The amount of accepted contributions, their score and categories you have contributed to give you a certain score each time, that is summed up and defines your current reputation compared to the members who got the highest score.

@evildido | April 18, 2018, 3:54 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

I wrote this message in the bus :) sorry for the mistake

Thx for your answer. I’m always worried because there is not many people that’s « score » and I must asks for friends to do it, I fear that’s somebody who has a big reputation « unscore » my contribution because he doesn’t like me. I hope this will never happen and if not, a moderator could help contributions that has been unfairly sanctioned

@favcau | April 18, 2018, 4:29 p.m. | Votes: 0 | [ VOTE ]

Hi @evildido, scoring other contributions will have a beneficial effect on your reputation, so I think that we are going to see more users scoring contributions in the near future.
We (CM and Mods) are constantly checking scores and we encourage Mods to always score a contribution, but if you see that some contribution doesn't deserve its score (low or high) you can report it on Discord.

@evildido | April 18, 2018, 4:31 p.m. | Votes: 1 | [ VOTE ]

Thanks thanks thanks !

Your answer is clear !

Hi @elear Can you explain the impact of user.honor_reputation and user.force_reputation?

At first glance it seems like this excepts some accounts from the scheme described above? Is this something other than the supervisors, managers, and sponsors which are exceptions already explained in the post?

It's in this section of the code

Thanks!
