Hola comunidad #worldmappin.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmShwzvycein8YmfGrLYXAKNByENjkhZ4BH9VFXmhN4JG6/screenshot_20260529_085206_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmSn86fAfCHMF9xGK4z27Qgh8gLu1G3bMg32rTxLWgeqRx/screenshot_20260529_090803_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmWxKxR9VQJbxs7kDteReRncp1RivQx9Vja5zYPMoT4j55/screenshot_20260529_091618_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmWBTN2NiKXrdcpfEBQ1ckGBzfJrUspF5goprPbkshdBjD/screenshot_20260529_091624_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmQaGkPWxVDoKitYd4Zi6uuGFiF4rNV8Fk6a5KaEryhke5/screenshot_20260529_091858_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmcgL2iGzWPYS9KvzQm7AiB3kodddfixMmezpqsHzsQbHM/screenshot_20260529_091904_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmf1gzMgKmtx42hN7fmqCFS3D3NTEoNeTM4Kkapq8gLLp3/screenshot_20260529_092205_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmSyNrJ3UKvuzWpctuxMzSDxFLqaPiXGnikW4HVkYcSzAK/screenshot_20260529_104747_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmQMDkgM6HjBoFfXWREkKmMrQ4jk42tgcH33TUKcPqtygY/screenshot_20260529_104757_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmQFyktMg5pc44vZBHRvSGnNgB29kvVF3zrBZ93TWyugHz/screenshot_20260529_105346_01.jpg]

📌 Matanzas in 100 Views #20

The City That Was Born Around a Church

This series is born from walking without haste and looking with intention.
Today the view pauses at one of the oldest and most symbolic places in Matanzas: the Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmShwzvycein8YmfGrLYXAKNByENjkhZ4BH9VFXmhN4JG6/screenshot_20260529_085206_01.jpg]

There are buildings that become part of a city.
And there are others around which the city itself seems to have begun.

The Cathedral of Matanzas belongs to the second group.

Long before the city existed as we know it today, there was already a cross standing there, a mass being celebrated, an attempt to build a temple. On October 12, 1693, the first stone was placed and blessed by Bishop Diego Evelino Hurtado de Compostela in a ceremony considered by many historians to be the founding act of the city.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmVb23C9exafVLrKbarZXjsBrm8UJY9pKALH4hCD8Pda9P/screenshot_20260529_085442_01.jpg]

In those early years, the church looked very different from the one we see today. It was a temporary structure made from royal palm leaves and much humbler materials. And even so, the place already carried enormous symbolic importance.

Then came a powerful storm.
And the temple collapsed.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmSn86fAfCHMF9xGK4z27Qgh8gLu1G3bMg32rTxLWgeqRx/screenshot_20260529_090803_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmVdcMmE4puWkbxvYvmaMm4ExaMmAUpBodfRgcqUzHCqSc/screenshot_20260529_090809_01.jpg]

The history of this Cathedral is also a story of destruction and reconstruction.

After the collapse, construction began once again until, during the first half of the 18th century, the building started to take the form that would eventually become one of the most important churches in Cuba. Over the centuries it underwent expansions, renovations, and restorations. Towers, side chapels, marble floors, and decorative details were added, many of which can still be admired today.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmWxKxR9VQJbxs7kDteReRncp1RivQx9Vja5zYPMoT4j55/screenshot_20260529_091618_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmWBTN2NiKXrdcpfEBQ1ckGBzfJrUspF5goprPbkshdBjD/screenshot_20260529_091624_01.jpg]

Inside, the Cathedral preserves frescoes, altars, and one of the most unique religious treasures in the country: the only complete Stations of the Cross painted on canvas in Cuba.

But beyond its religious value, the Cathedral also preserves the memory of Matanzas.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmQaGkPWxVDoKitYd4Zi6uuGFiF4rNV8Fk6a5KaEryhke5/screenshot_20260529_091858_01.jpg]

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmcgL2iGzWPYS9KvzQm7AiB3kodddfixMmezpqsHzsQbHM/screenshot_20260529_091904_01.jpg]

Its archives contain baptismal records and documents connected to important Cuban cultural and historical figures, including José Jacinto Milanés, José White, and the poet Plácido.

It is almost as if part of the city itself had been archived within its walls.

The Cathedral stands in the historic heart of Matanzas, on Jovellanos Street, very close to Liberty Park and the old urban center between the San Juan and Yumurí rivers.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmf1gzMgKmtx42hN7fmqCFS3D3NTEoNeTM4Kkapq8gLLp3/screenshot_20260529_092205_01.jpg]

And speaking about its surroundings reveals something curious.

Unlike many churches built during the colonial and later neoclassical periods, the Cathedral of Matanzas does not have a large frontal square directly facing it. According to something my daughter, a civil engineer, once explained to me, Matanzas was a city that was planned before it was fully built, something that did not happen in the same way in many other Cuban cities that grew more spontaneously.

There is also a well-known local theory suggesting that after the collapse of the first church, the urban layout changed and the area that originally served as the square in front of the temple was repurposed. That may explain why today the Cathedral feels integrated into the urban fabric in a different way.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmSyNrJ3UKvuzWpctuxMzSDxFLqaPiXGnikW4HVkYcSzAK/screenshot_20260529_104747_01.jpg]

The smaller side areas that many people call parks actually function more like open courtyards surrounding the church, while the real large public square nearby eventually became what is now Liberty Park.

I do not know how many people notice that detail while passing by.
But once you think about it, it becomes impossible not to see.

And perhaps that is precisely one of the most interesting things about this series.

Discovering that cities speak even through what apparently is no longer there.

Some years ago I also had a personal experience connected to this place.

When the restoration that returned part of the Cathedral’s splendor was taking place and eventually concluded in 2017, I was working in a construction cooperative. On one occasion I visited some friends who were involved in the restoration work.

I still remember the interior filled with scaffolding, the constant movement, the dust, the tools, and at the same time the feeling of standing inside something far older than all of us.

It was not simply a construction project.
It was a part of the city trying to preserve itself.

And perhaps that is why the Cathedral continues to impress.
Not only because of its architecture.
Not only because of its history.

But because it has remained there while Matanzas changed around it.

It has seen streets grow.
It has seen structures disappear.
It has survived storms.
It has accompanied entire generations.

And it still remains one of those places where the city seems to breathe more slowly.

[IMAGE: https://i.ecency.com/DQmQFyktMg5pc44vZBHRvSGnNgB29kvVF3zrBZ93TWyugHz/screenshot_20260529_105346_01.jpg]

On one side of the surrounding area there is also a huge gear wheel that has almost become a sculptural element, partially embraced by vegetation. Many people pass by without truly knowing its origin. Perhaps it is one of those industrial pieces that silently became part of the urban landscape, also reminding us of Matanzas’ historical ties to industry and the port.

Because in this city even forgotten objects eventually seem to tell a story.

This was another view.
See you next weekend in another view of Matanzas.
