The Tatras are part of the mountainous chain of the Carpathians in Eastern Europe and create a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. Both the Slovak side and the Polish side are protected as national parks and are popular destinations for winter and summer sports. The Tatras harbor fauna, such as marmots, lynxes, bears and Tale chamois. In Slovakia is the highest mountain in the chain, Gerlach Peak, 2,655 m high.
